(June 5th, 2008) We were down for the last 5 days due to a catastrophic failure in the power systems at our hosting provider.
Sorry about that, wish there was something we could have done, but we were just waiting on the provider to handle things on their end. (I know some folks thought this was because we had warned of downtime with the message below, but it actually was totally unrelated!)
Finally, this morning, at about 4am Pacific Time, they finally restored power and full functioning to the primary prince.org server. So, good to be back! You can check out more details, or comment, in this blog post about the incident, as well. Whew!
prince.org will be relocating to a new (faster) server shortly. Please expect the site to be down, or up in a limited capacity only, during the move. We hope to have it back up quickly, but these things don't always go as smoothly as one might hope. I don't expect it to take more than 6 hours, but just be prepared!
Thanks for your understanding!
In a victory for small-time music copiers over the entertainment industry, a federal judge ruled that copyright-holders can't order one of their songs removed from the Web without first checking to see if the excerpt was so small that it was legal. The case dates from 2007, when Stephanie Lenz posted a video of her infant son dancing to Prince's "Let's Go Crazy" on YouTube. Universal Music Corp., which owns the rights to the song, ordered YouTube to remove the video and nearly 200 others involving Prince compositions. For 13 years, the last Sunday of the month in Chicago meant Prince Night at Club Berlin, which entailed seen and unseen videos, new music, Purple Rain cocktails, and dancing til dawn. Prince fans from far and wide partied together every month for over a decade...and now, sadly, it's coming to an end as Sam & Chad host their final purple party at Berlin nightclub on Sunday, Aug. 31, 2008. Apparently some Prince-admiring dentist called "The Singing Dentist" got a record deal in part based on his rendition of Purple Rain. But Prince won't give him permission to sing it. Now rinse, and spit. Posted by ben in Prince: Music and More (95 comments)

The feminist pop culture publication Bitch has published an article in a recent issue about Prince (written by the org's very own SnakePeel!), in which the gender politics of his lyrics are called into question, with mostly glowing results. An interesting read for those who like to take a dip into the analytical side of Prince's work... Posted by meow85 in Prince: Music and More (85 comments)
The original configuration of The Time regrouped for the beginning of their summer residency at The Flamingo in Las Vegas - orger jwashin4 was there, and was kind enough to share all the details. Call up the a-list and light the candles, it's time for another Prince party...and according to reports, this one did not disappoint! Located at the Purple One's house in L.A., guests were treated to advance images from the upcoming "21 Nights" photo book. Of course, those in attendance also enjoyed a performance in the wee hours of the night by Prince & the NPG, who covered a handful of '60s classics before rolling into the tried and true "so many hits, so little time" playlist. In a small blurb, USA Today's May 29 edition mentioned the "hottest ticket" of this year's BookExpo America publishing industry gathering, which happens to be none other than a celebration for Prince's forthcoming "21 Nights" photo-essay tome. Posted by prime in Prince: Music and More (21 comments)
In a recent interview, Radiohead frontman Thom Yorke discussed Prince's performance of their song "Creep" at Coachella, and was asked how he felt about all video clips of the Princely cover version being yanked from YouTube. "Really? He's blocked it?" the singer replied. "Well, tell him to unblock it. It's our song!" Posted by Anxiety in Prince: Music and More (345 comments)

“Buy them all and make your own judgments.
You know what?
Sign O The Times is an album I can't listen to all the way through; Hot Thing, Adore, It, Forever In My Life and Slow Love bore me to tears.
New Power Soul however I love pretty much all the way through, bar '
Like Funky Music'.
I love Emancipation and NEWS all the way through, but by loving those two albums, I seemingly go against just what Prince fans are meant to love/hate. That said, I still consider myself a hardcore Prince fan nonetheless. Also, for me Planet Earth is 45ish minutes of great music - it's not a guilty pleasure, it's a great pleasure!
We all love different things and we all love different music. Prince fans are blessed in so far that we've got so much to listen to and so much musical diversity to love/disregard within one man's work.
If you enjoy Prince's work then legitimately buy his albums and make your own mind up - I genuinely believe that true fans will enjoy all of his work, even if they don't necessarily love it! For anybody to say that they 'hate' any kind of music seems ridiculous to me. You can surely either love music or feel indifferent to it. Why would you actually 'hate' music?
You might just see that the general view of the Org ain't necessarily your own view. That's what I've felt over the years, but it doesn't matter.
Everybody else's Jughead may be your When Doves Cry.”—Haystack, 8/08 in the forums
“Yes and no. I mean, nobody has done nasty better than Prince. But I've always respected him for aging well in this business. He's not out there still lookin' and acting like some 20 year-old sex fiend. He knows when to put things away. Seriously, how could a 50 year old man sing Head and still maintain any kind of dignity? He can still be sexy...just not THAT nasty!”—simm0061, 4/08 in the forums
“The sexy material is all preserved...whether it be within an old recording, or a memory.... If U don't love Prince, 4 the 99 other elements that He is as a musician, than I suppose you are disregarding Prince's nature...Because if you listen closely...Prince is spiritual, more than He is flirtatious.”—Tame, 5/08 in the forums
