Loss of a pet

I’m a new member on the site, but I’m so upset, I decided to post this because I thought it my help me.

My little dog Oscar died yesterday early A.M. while my husband and I were rushing him to the vet. He had been treated for congestive heart failure for a while and was doing pretty well even though his heart had enlarged, pushing up against his trachea. He was little restless Sunday evening but finally went to sleep on a stack of pillows that I fixed for him. Unfortunately though, he woke up coughing but couldn’t stop and went into a seizure. Like I said, we rushed him to an emergency vet., but we just didn’t make it in time.

I have three other dogs, and knew that Oscar’s time was limited ‘coz of his heart problem. I thought I would be able to handle it better when the time came, but I’m just heartbroken. Of course, my husband has tried to comfort me even though he’s also a wreck about it. Both of the vets and their staffs that have treated Oscar over the years expressed their sorrow. My sister sent me an e-card. My mom tried to console me. My co-workers called to offer their support. Even my other three dogs haven't left my side because the sense that something is wrong.

Unfortunately, I’m inconsolable at this point. I feel so silly ‘coz I know he was just a dog, and there is so much other suffering in the world. I honestly thought I could put this loss in better perspective, but I was wrong: he was my friend, and I’m sure going to miss him. Anyway, thanks for your patience in letting me express my sorrow.

i'm very sorry to hear about this - my best friend lost her kitty last year, and that cat had been around for years, since we were in college. it was like losing a friend. it's a really tough thing - hang in there.

You shouldn't feel that grieving for your pet is in some way unjustified or overly emotional.
Pets are part of the family too, nobody would suggest there is anything wrong with the love and affection we show our pets, why should there be anything wrong with grieving for them too.

I know what you're going through (I'm a cat person myself) and have had to say goodbye to too many furry friends over the years.

I know it's no consolation now, and you've heard it too many times before, but time does heal wounds, the day will come when you'll be able to remember little Oscar and smile.

Sorry to hear that . It is so sad to loose a pet, no need to feel it is inappropiate to grieve and feel deeply sad. I will never forget my loved dog who did 13 years ago, he was like a family member

I am so sorry for your loss and don't feel silly about posting this. Dogs and cats for that matter become a huge part of our families and when they pass away it's not any easier to deal with then the loss of a close friend or relative. I lost my dog Sandy a few years ago and when I come across a picture of her it brings back how much I miss her. So take your time and grieve for your lost friend.

Not "just a dog". Doggies love their people! People love their doggies! It okay you feel sad!

I have lost several cats throughout the years, so I know how devastating it can be. Like someone posted earlier, pets become a member of our families, and they hold a spot very near and dear to us in our hearts, one that no other animal can replace. Don't feel embarrassed or ashamed to grieve, since that is what helps you heal. Take care of yourself and let us know how you're doing.

Ugh, my heart goes out to you. I have a 20yr old cat and the past few days she's been looking awful. I was hoping I'd come home and she'd pass away in her sleep or something but I think I have to put her down. I don't know how I'm going to be able to do it but I think it's going to have to happen this week. I could cry just thinking about it.

I know what it feels like, a year and a half ago my best friend Oliver passed away, 12 years old. He developed epilepsy due to rhenal failure.
I feel your pain, try to remember that Oscar is in a better place now, where his heart will bother him no more. He's in the evergreen fields

My Doberman who i raised since she was a puppy, had to be put down 3 years ago due to being senile,

Dog Lover in the house over here too. Nothing ever can replace them

I am glad that you at least got some time with him and that he did not suffer for long!

I am sure you gave him the best home he could wish for!

Likewise....Sounds like Oscar had a good home and heaps of love...

He sounded like a dear best friend and one of the family...

I'm sorry, losing a pet is almost like losing a child for me.

I'm so sorry to hear that Isel...there's nothing I can say that will make it easier but hopefully with time that pain will fade into remembering beautiful memories

Hi Isel,

So sorry to hear about your loss.

I know first hand (all too well) what it means to lose a pet that's really close to you. Believe me, there's no words for how much it sucks.

It's not silly at all that you hurt so bad cause of it-Oscar was a part of your family and big in your life. Some people may not get that, but you feel how you feel. Never feel bad about that.

It takes time to get to the point of it not hurting so much, but it does happen. Listening to music that doesn't get you down is something that helped me at least.

Remember that Oscar is kept alive by your memories and not forgetting how important he was to you.

Hang in there-and know you're not alone in having to have dealt with this-but it is something that gets better.

Lemme know if you need somebody to listen/share stories with.

I just realized that I've forgotten to feed my wife's fish ever since she's been here in the hospital!
