What exactly are The JW's is it a black thing?

I have noticed that there are alot of JW's here on this site. I also realized that I don't know too much about the faith from the inside. I only really know it from the perspective of those of us outside.

I also realized that just about every JW I do know is Black. Which I found interesting so I decided to ask. I mean I know that their are black Mormons but you don't run into too many. So I thought now would be a good time for me to ask about The JW's and their racial make up and learn a thing or too!!

Peace

My brother went to an international in Chile this past November. He's white but he said many of our poor brothers there had never seen anyone black up close in person and they all wanted to touch the hair and skin of our black brothers and sisters that were there. They just smiled and seemed to enjoy all the attention. I also talked to a brother once that went to an International in Poland and pretty much the same thing was happening there. He is a short, heavy, kinda comical looking brother and his great grandfather came over to the US from Russia...so he looked a lot like many of the Polish brothers there. He said there was a group of people feeling the hair and skin of a black sister from the US. He went up to her and felt of her hair and touched her on the arm as if he'd never seen a black person. Then he looked at her straight in the face and smiled real big...she was politely smiling back...then in his best ghetto voice he goes, "Say baby, what's happnin?" She just about falls down laughing at him.

Many Christmas' ago, I went to buy a doll for my son. I reached for the last one they had, but so did another man. As I rained blows upon him, I realized there had to be another way.

wink as an inactive jehovah's witnesses i have known a lot of african americans in the org. but it is not a black religion or anything like that. there are people of all races. there isn't any racism in the org.that i ever came across. which may be a plus for other races.

Thanks for the link! I had the priviledge to attend the International Convention last year in Long Beach, Ca. Its refreshing to see so many nationalities together serving Jehovah. The delegates were as excited to see us as we were of them. Many of them passed out nice gifts for the kids from their country.

What a great link. Even though I'm a disassociated JW, it makes me miss one of the few truly great things about JWs: racial harmony.

Thats correct, but that probably had more to do with the time period. Racially, JW's are a mixed bunch. Its something they are very proud of (and quite rightly so)

I worked in some part of middle east country, where no religious organization other than islam are allowed, secretly I attended a JW meeting where you find multiple races such as American, British, Belgium, Italy, Ghana, India, Philippines and even Pakistan a vast majority of muslims. I was impressed, can't see racism but care for each other as a worker. I was not a JW then, as soon I arrived in my home country, I continue with my bible studies and later baptist.

Hello to all brothers and sisters ...

Being such a racially diverse organization brings its own problems. Out of the 4 congregations I attended, 2 showed undercurrents of racism. One of these didnt even bother to hide it, and the racial comments (from Elders down to Publishers) came almost on a weekly basis.

I must stress that this is not the norm, I was just highlighting a problem that can arise when you have such a multicultural organization.

And did the C.O. handle the situation at his next visit? I would guess that he did. Yes, my friend, these things happen. That is why there are regular visits from experienced ones. The visit encourages, teaches, and corrects.

This is true. I've seen some Circuit Overseers do some serious correcting in this regard! lol Even though these "problems" (from having such a multicultural organization) arise here and there, they aren't above fixing. People constantly need to be reminded to love their brother.

There's a book, Jehovah's Witnesses: The African American Enigma--A Contemporary Study (Vol. I), that might interest you. It's actually written by a JW. Here's the amazon.com review:

More than any other religion in recent history, Jehovah's Witnesses have quietly and positively impacted the black community. Yet, some are concerned that the needs of African Americans, and Black Witnesses specifically, have been overlooked. Others argue that the predominantly white Governing Body is insensitive toward black plight.
This book deals squarely with these and other issues facing today's black Witnesses. Dr. Firpo W. Carr, an active Witness himself for over 35 years (and full-time minister for over 20 of those years), has traveled to black communities in major cities across the United States--from Harlem to Oakland--in an effort to carefully study and critique black Witnesses. The results have been discribed as "riveting."

Though the focus of his study was in the United States, he traveled to Cuba to study black Witnesses and their history on the Communist island. Fidel Castro elected to air Carr's 45-minute lecture on racism nationwide.

On both ends of the sociopolitical spectrum Carr's works have been widely accepted and admired. Legacy, "Africa's leading magazine on social issues," the original Black Panther Party, and many others have recognized and published Carr.

hmmm Makes ya wonder.
It also makes me curious of Carr's intentions. Seems like he had some kind of pro-black agenda, and he knows JWs don't roll that way. We care just as much about our brothers and sisters in Korea, Rwanda, Turkey, Russia etc. as we do our brothers and sisters here at home. Again, James 2:1-9. It don't just apply to the rich and poor, ya know. wink

Being human is being imperfect, depending on the person's family background, it's hard to break from an old habit of sometimes doing or saying harsh things. But in our studies, it is always emphasize and teach the equality of races in the eyes of God, which should be. For this is the how the other people may know you, 'when you show love to each other'. If ever, a brother or sister showed racism, it is I who will forgive.

According to the recent article at
http://enjoyment.independ...ory=538689

he is a current active JW. I havent' read the book (I ordered it today) but it doesn't sound like he makes any apostate accusations. In fact he comes down on apostates. I think he merely addresses the special African-American social needs of the JW religion. I think he has a legitimate concern that only one Governing Body member is black considering there's such a high percentage of black JWs. He sounds to me like someone who has "made the Truth his own," i.e. realized that it's more than a religion (hence Biblical truth doesn't matter), but a way of life.

seems it's simply his field of study.

i've thought the same about the one black governing body member. but then again, the WT society isn't being run like a corporation composed of special-interest groups... probably my background has influenced my opinion, as my father was an officer for the EEOC. smile
