ST. PAUL, Minn. -- A group of about 4,000 protesters are trying to break down the security fences at 5th and 7th, near the northwest entrance to the Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul.

The protesters marched toward the RNC from the State Capitol after an impromptu Rage Against the Machine concert.

Arrests stats

At least 10 people were arrested Tuesday. Added to the 284 arrests Monday, the number of RNc protest arrests is nearing 300.

Homemade bombs explode

Near Mickey's Diner, protesters exploded three homemade bombs near police. officers responded with tear gas and smoke bombs.

Rage concert through megaphone

St. Paul police shut down the concert, which didn't stop band members Zack de la Rocha and Tom Morello from shouting lyrics to songs like “Bulls on Parade” through a megaphone.

Rage Against The Machine played a free show on the State Capitol lawn as part of the Ripple Effect music festival.

Protesters are also spilling over into Cedar Avenue and 10th.

Protester scales fence along perimeter

Around 7:50 p.m. police reported a protester had climbed over the fenced perimeter around the Xcel Energy Center.

Protests began Tuesday with about 2,000 in the Poor People’s march in St. Paul, blocks from the Republican National Convention.

Protesting an arrest

Police tried to arrest the first protester before a surge of others moved in, protesting the arrest.

Police were concerned because about 30 anarchists latched onto the march, organized by the Poor People's Economic Human Rights Campaign

'Don't take over our parade'

“Don’t take over our parade,” an organizer told anarchists. “We have a point here about poor people in America."

The original plan

The rally started at Mears Park, about nine blocks away from the RNC, before a planned march to the Xcel Energy Center where they planned to serve Republicans with a "citizens' arrest."

The fools that turn to violence do nothing to forward any agenda.

There is plenty to protest in MPLS this week, and there is no doubt there are righteous causes to "rage" against, but seriously, what does breaking Macy's windows to to right the wrong done to those that were unfairly raided this weekend?

We can only hope they burned all the 3121 after breaking into Macy's.

i do agree that the violence really proves nothing, regardless of who is committing it.

that said, i still don't believe that children, journalists or nuns are fair game. except for mary hart. please somebody pepper spray her ass before that damn voice gives me the shakes again. but seriously. this is just completely out of hand. and rage is playing downtown MPLS tomorrow, so it's going to be more of the same tomorrow night too.

I agree as well. The police reaction is totally disproportionate and the violations of basic rights are rampant. It would just be more productive if everyone realized that Starbucks ripped you off for coffee earlier, not gassed your buddies. No need to take it out on them.

it's like in the 70s when old timey things were popular and paul williams would wear a straw hat and play banjo on the muppet show with an all-pig ragtime band.

only different!

This kind of shit makes me puke. I'm just as unwilling to see McCain elected in November, but why do people have to stop using common sense. The same shit happened in 2003, in SF, with an anti-war protest. It was planned to go do down a certain street, but some without any agenda but disruption somehow managed to change the direction of the protest, to go down Market St., and when the police stepped in, a stand-off of several hours began, and Market St., between 8th and 9th St. was blocked off, the police on one end of the street, the protestors on the other. I know this because I was inside the Ramada Hotel when it happened, attending IBR (Int'l. Bear Rendezvous). We were stuck inside the hotel, and could not leave for about an hour. Then when we could leave, I was barked at by a police officer that I couldn't walk through the streets, so the only way I had to go back to my hotel was underground, by way of MUNI.

But BECAUSE SOME FUCKIN' STOOPID IDIOTS have the same kind of mentality as the people who sat on the top of the porto-potties during SF Gay Pride this year, even though signs posted specifically told them not to, the rest of us have to pay. BECAUSE SOME FUCKIN' STOOPID IDIOTS want to rebel just cuz to show off the cool new anarchy shirt they just got, or they want to march because they just got cute new shoes, now the rest of us have to pay. Why do our protest marches get infiltrated with people who want to rebel just for rebellion sake?

AND THAT'S JUST HOW I FEEL ABOUT THAT! If I end up being more afraid of the protestors that come, than the people committing the action that is being protested, then how can I tell which is the friend and which is the foe?

'Don't take over our parade'

“Don’t take over our parade,” an organizer told anarchists. “We have a point here about poor people in America."

Unbelievable.

Exactly. The biggest problem I have with the Democratic Party isn't the politicians but some of their super-douchebag supporters.
For example, 30 Conneticut delegates were attacked the other day.
The cops also arrested a group that was storing vats of urine.
Beyond this week, liberal censorship and intimidation at college campuses and lectures is so commonplace it has become cliche....so much for free speech.
Does this really sound like a group of people confidant that they can win in an open airing of all political viewpoints?
If you can't beat em, then shut em up or beat em up or throw urine on them.
Nice.

Yesterday at a bookstore, a female (and presumed Obama supporter) around 20 years old glanced at the cover of the Economist magazine. "What do they mean the "Real McCain?" she asked her mother. "McCain is evil."

Well, thanks for the complex analysis, Delores Kearns Goodwin.

hmm you know, back in the old days my pal tony took me in through the basement of the old orpheum theater nea the old coney island bar and grill and showed me around the underground st. paul tunnel/cave tour. an entire tunnel city exists underneath st. paul. it's left over from the old days. i'm sure the police already know this, from the 1920s bootlegging/mafia era, and they've likely blocked the tunnels off so the Xcel center cannot be accessed, right? you'd think?
