Oh lawd...

The title to this thread is completely misleading.

You chose to place a CDR on Prince's stage. Do you know how annoying it is to be a famous musician and have everyone you meet try to take advantage of it by forming some form of personal relationship.

Prince has opened up to let us watch his soundcheck. Contrary to what you might think, Prince actually works pretty darn hard during the soundcheck, trying to make everything perfect for the show. What you failed to mention is that your persistent badgering caused us to literally hear almost NOTHING during the soundcheck. Considering he had only a few minutes to do it, and spent half the time arguing with you, you brought me to tears as well!

People like you will cause the soundchecks to STOP! Will that make you happy? Personally, I think they were very nice not to throw you out of the theatre. When Prince said he didn't want your CD, that was it! Take it back; and keep quiet so he can do his job. Instead, you were persistent and wouldn't be quiet. Did you not hear everyone in the audience moaning for you to be quiet?

Have some respect for the life that Prince has to lead. Everywhere he goes, he is known to us, but we are unknown to him. Any idea why he's hostile? Fame is not always so great. Prince has been very generous to let us in early and chat informally with us. But PLEASE people, DO NOT take advantage of his generosity like this lady.

No offense to you personally, but please think of this from his point of view. If he takes your CD and says he'll listen to it, he'll have people dropping off CDs every show.

Give the man a break...

Is this for real or an April fool's joke? It's either a hilariously funny spoof of a crazy fan or a tragic and sad story of a crazy fan.

I was there and the fact that you even put a cd on stage shows that you are clearly disabled....mentally! Sorry but what were you thinking? By the way, that was the best show I've ever seen in my life. I also got called on stage to dance...perhaps that was one of the reasons....Santana...another reason....the list goes on....catch this tour if you get the chance!! Seriously!

Prince brings a disabled fan to tears.....
Monday, April 01, 2002

Hello. My experience at the Easter Sunday Prince concert was completely humiliating. I have been a fan of Prince's for 24 years, seen many concerts, even danced on-stage with him at the Crown in Cincinnati. He's inspired me to become a songwriter myself - to date, I've written over 600 compositions, close to 50 about Prince. Who would've known I was in for a good cry on Sunday.
My husband & I traveled 5 1/2 hours from Pittsburgh in a rainstorm to attend Sunday's concert. We couldn't afford 2 tickets, so my husband stayed in a motel why I attended Sunday's event alone. Little did I know I was hours away from be mistreated by none other than Prince himself. We arrived in Washington D.C. with a couple hours to spare; enough time for me to dye my hair purple underneath and finish sewing the costume I had been working on all week. We proceeded to the venue & my husband kissed me on the cheek & told me "have a good time, honey." Little did he know.
So I proceed to the soundcheck. I'm shy, so I sat quietly in the back & saw no harm in placing one of my CD's on the stage. I thought hey, maybe he'll take a listen & see the next generation of what he's inspired. What a mistake.
When Prince appeared on-stage he immediately picked up my CD & said "who's is this?" I said "mine, I'm Divinity" to which he rudely demanded "come & get it." I said "that's o.k., it's for you." Prince demanded "come & get it." I told him "no, you've embarrassed me enough already." He said "what's this about?" I proceeded to tell him I traveled 5 hours to get here & would like him to have a copy of my CD. To give him a frame of reference I told him, "I'm the one who wrote a 2nd verse to 'Crazy You.'" (o.k. the history. I was briefly signed at Oar Fin Records in Minneapolis. One of my favorite Prince songs is "Crazy You" an accoustic guitar song off his first album. I've listened to it over & over, & only having one verse I found the song to end too quickly for me. I thought wouldn't it be great if the song had a 2nd verse? So out of love & respect for Prince I chose to write a 2nd verse & I was told I had permission to record the song. I violated my contract at Oar Fin when another producer's original music was copied - so you see, I'm not into stealing intellectual property. In fact I added my own intellectual property to an existing work, thus making it a collaborative effort. Furthermore, when I dissolved the contract with Oar Fin, I called Paisley Park personally to tell them I was the one who wrote the 2nd verse to the song, asked them if they wanted a copy, and called Prince's attorney in N.Y. as directed. I gave Prince's attorney the infomation, he took down my personal info & told me he would call back if things were favorable. That was the end of that.)
So, back to the story: To give him a frame of reference I told him, "I'm the one who wrote a 2nd verse to 'Crazy You.'" Prince said "did someone say you could do that?" I proceeded to tell him I had been a fan & why I did it. He repeated his question. I told him I called Paisley Park & his attorney & nothing ever became of it. Prince went on lecturing the crowd about the value of intellectual property & how Alicia Keys stole one of his songs. At one point another fam member yelled out to Prince, "hey man, she brought it to your house, no disrespect." To which he replied "would it have made a difference if Alicia Keys brought me my song in a catsuit?"(referring to my costume) Meanwhile, my addition to "Crazy You" is dead in the water. I never reproduced it, sold it - nada. It wasn't even on the CD I was trying to give him. As I said, I was using that comment to give Prince a frame of reference as to who I was in case he had heard it in the mix that - hey some girl called wanting permission to release a song - I wanted him to know I was her. What a dumb idea.
Long story short, Prince assumed I had reproduced a copy of his song & profited off it, not true. But still he went off on me humiliating me publically in front of all the NPGMC members & mistreating me verbally. I yelled out "it's too bad you don't want to hear what you inspired." My CD was returned to me & I was told to be quiet or I would be forcefully removed & my ticket taken for me. Immediately I was hysterical crying which continued for 2 hours in which I was consoled by other fam members & employees at the Warner Theatre - thanks to the kind people in D.C.
I stayed motionless in my seat crying & shaking, wimpering & sniffling with the security guard hovering over me waiting for any excuse to throw me out. What a rotten trip. Thanks a lot Prince.
As for Prince, I & all the other fams present got to see why people say he's mean & difficult to get along with. The rotten twin was definitely on hand for Easter Sunday making me sorry I ever was a Prince fan, making me sorry I put forth so much effort. All night people were saying, oh, you're the girl Prince yelled at...great! Yeah, that's me - I'm the one Prince yelled at, I'm the one he misunderstood. Add me to the list of broken hearts.
Most of all, practice what you preach - "love for one another" was not what I experienced & "one night alone with Prince" was definitely enough for me.

www.divinitysse.com - the discography page of my website verifies the Prince collaboration song was never released. I am a songwriter myself; I know the value of intellectual property, I would not disrespect someone I've spent my life respecting...don't get it twisted.

This story is actually TRUE? God, if so that totally sucks. It sounds like Prince could've handled it better and it sounds like the fan was way too fanatical in the first place.

Note:

Sorry but if you claiming to be a fan for so long you should know Prince better than to stick a cd of anything on the stage.

I am a musician and I manage a few acts and it is not professional to show up at another artist's gig and try to use them to get somewhere with your career.

Its not cool.

Now as far as Prince being juvenile and making fun of your outfit, that's another story. That's not cool either.

Specially with some of the silly outfits he has been known to wear wink

Sorry if u got your feelings hurt, but after thinking about it, 2 things occured 2 me:

1.) The soundchecks r not auditions or casting calls. They're 2 make sure the sound is right and 4 the band to get loose & warm up. If dude took every solicitation from every artist in need of a break, he'd never get 2 perform. HAving said that, I can c how your feelings were hurt, especially after so much effort expended 2 get 2 the show, leading me to point...

2.) Beleive me, if u can't handle rejection gracefully and with strength, then you propbably need to get out of the art biz. As an artist myself, I can tell u from experience that one of the toughest things to deal with is the constant second guessing, forced revisions and outright rejection of a lot of work into which I've placed a great deal of time and effort. Don't sweat. Your access to the soundcheck was a perk; a benefit of memebership that most people will never get 2 experience, and if you were going 2 choose that moment to sell yourself, than you must brace yourself for a response, positive or negative.

It does sound like he may have been uneccassarily (sp?) harsh, but I suspect u went there with unrealistic expectations. Expectation is the mother of disappointment. Sux u elected to cry instead of dance, but hey...? Good luck with future efforts, and don't let nobody bring u down, HIs Royal BAdness or otherwise...

Anyway...maybe Prince could have handled that better, and declined your offer in a nicer way. But you shouldn't have kept on asking when he first said no.

No, what you said was "I called Londell and he gave me permission." Prince then said "Londell didn't write Crazy You, I did." Basically, he doubted your story.

No, I don't think so. He mentioned that Alicia Keys hadn't gotten a license to cover the song. Someone then asked why he let her come to the celebration last year. He replied, "Oh, she's completely cool. It's her record company that I have a problem with. (see Clive Davis!). He then made a comment about how he talked to some WB attorney or someone about "what if I started covering Andrew Lloyd Weber in concert?" He made some comment about what if I was wearing a catsuit--which I took as a reference to the musical "Cats", not to something you were wearing.

I don't think this was about you "profiting." It was about you covering and reworking his song without his permission. Some might not like it, but Prince simply doesn't like people messing with his music, period.

musicians can get into trouble sometimes when people give them CDs or demos because often you'll see lawsuits pop up where someone accuses that musician of stealing an idea or melody, etc. just because someone handed them an unsolicited piece of music. happens all the time.

Disabled? Don't you mean "handicapable", you turkey? You know what, you should've done a totally rad wheelie in your wheelchair. That would've shut Prince up.

All you fucking idiots who think an open soundcheck is your invitation to establish some personal relationship with Prince deserve exactly what you get. You're lucky he didn't cancel the whole soundcheck thanks to your little stunt. Betcha those "friendly" NPGMC members would've rolled your chair bound ass down the arena steps.

Aiight lemme address this cuz I aint a Jehovah's Witness. What exactly the fuck does your so called handicap have to do w/ anything? Prince is crazy when it comes to people jacking his shit. More importantly, he dosent owe you anything. This is not new news. If you modified a song that old, you already know how he is about it. But back to the question. The title of your post is a microcosm of your problem. You are an opportunist, you fucked w/ the bull, and got the horns. You know how to act so stop the nonsense.

All the energy that you put into trying to get on w/ Prince, and get sympathy from a fan site coulda gone to you putting together a serious package for serious consideration. Bring up the handicap thing when you do a real audition on your own terms. You trying to embarras him into fucking w/ you? Come on

Now I have to agree, when I saw the title I thought "Disable Girl" was crying because it was such a beautiful show or something like that..

Secondly I think it was a bad idea about the cd, you can see all the reason why as the feedback you get on this thread! (I mean insted of I'm writeing it all down you can see what the others said, which I agree with them on!)

- But If I put myself in that position as you were in, I'd probably had sat down and cried, and I truly understand why your feeling were hurted.. and I must say Prince sounded a little hard on you! Esp. about referring to your costume.. you should had taken the cd first time he asked you to take it back..

I don't think you should say your never wished to had becomed a Prince fan, I know you're probably in shock and I know I'd had been too, but I don't think you should hold that against Prince, its probably not the first time something like this had happend to him..

Would it have killed Prince to just hand the CD over to an assistant & just proceed with the soundcheck & not be rude? He's been so open & kind to fans so far on this tour & I don't understand this reaction he gave this girl. Does he really consider this THAT offensive?!

And why comment on her outfit? What does that have to do with anything? To everybody planning to go to an upcoming soundcheck: Don't wear anything a little out of the ordinary cuz Prince might make fun of you.

Thank you! Please, don't kiss his ass! He isn't stupid, and he can see through you!

Sit and chill and let him play. That's what true fams do!

The only really cool person at the soundcheck was that young girl! She was da bomb; she was just "real" and honest with the man. You go girl! She got up on stage and got her groove on during the show! Don't let nobody tell you otherwise, you are the coolest kid in your class, because you got some soul and originality for a young person. You were the coolest "fam" at the show.

She isn't telling her story in context. Prince was polite and asked the person to come take their CD back. She then started whining and going on and on and on.

And he didn't make fun of her outfit IMHO.

If Prince is so worried about other people covering his work and stealing his intellectual property, maybe HE should quit covering songs himself. I would really like to hear if he's shelling out royalties to Joni Mitchel, Santana, the Ohio Players and so forth.

If the above story is all true, I feel sorry for her. All he had to do is pick up the CD and set it aside, or not even acknowledge it. End of story. For him to go the extra step of humiliating a fan is completely inconsiderate.

Thats part of being a superstar Prince, get over it. We shell out plenty of money for these "experiences", go buy yourself some manners.
