My Messy Koko review

I was there. I think most of it has been reported on, but I’ll give a few observations.

The crowd were a really good mix of young and old. I'd say that a very small percentage was hardcore Prince fans. The reception to his new songs was pretty tame. I and the other hardcore fans knew the words and sang along, but a lot of the crowd just gazed in a kind of bemused awe.

He began, as you know, with a long jazz intro. You can't complain when you got people like Maceo doing his thing, and I think it works to build up the tension, but the casual fans/ people that got a ticket through their work etc. didn't appreciate it. They were getting notably agitated. They wanted to see Prince.

The first 'hit' I recall that he did was 'girls and boys'. He tore into it, and it sounded brilliant. The crowd got more into it, but I’d say definitely not all of them knew the song, or at least recognised the arrangement.

He did 'Lolita' which personally I don't think works live (I’m not too sold on it on record either). You can't really dance to it, and you feel a bit of an idiot singing along to the words. I did sing along to the words. It only really gets going when he does the call and response thing.

Black Sweat on the other hand was funky as hell.

Kiss was great. For along time this song didn’t sound right live. When he did the "I think I wanna dance now" bit followed by the guitar strumming. Ahh man.. I was 11 again! smile

About midway through the concert - I’m not sure if I was because I had decided to push myself in front of the stiffs in front of me and surround myself with better fun folk, or whether some of non fans had dropped back, or perhaps prince had just converted them - but by about mid way, I think around the time that he he performed 'kiss', he suddenly had the crowd in the palm of his hand. It was amazing to watch.

By the end we were all just a bunch of bitches for Prince's funk.

I've never been a big fan of 'u got the look', but this was one of the best performances of the night. And there were many. Perhaps it's just one of those ones that works brilliantly live. Like everything he's doing at the moment it was so funky. And there's just something so fucking cool about a crowd of hundreds singing 'you got the look' and pointing at the little man.

He did 'gotta broken heart again'. You could have heard a pin drop. Really showed how good the acoustics in Koko were. Never thought I’d get to see him perform this. It was whilst singing this that I thought about how he really could have been the al green of his generation if had wanted to. Ok, perhaps there couldn’t be another al green, but you get the picture.

And then there was 'nothing compares 2u'. When he sang "all the flowers in my garden, they all died when you want away' , with the little scream and shit. Ahh man Heaven.

And his version of 'Crazy' - another absolute highlight. Everyone singing along - and Prince just acting like he couldn't believe everyone's love for him.

Oh, and his final encore was 'lets go crazy' smile

So, that’s it. My rather messy report. Sorry, I’ve had to rush it as I have to go out tonight. It was one of the best nights of my life. It really was. I never thought that seeing him live would live up to my expectations, but it did. It blew them out of the water.

The most amazing thing was how he changed the crowd from a bunch of passive wimps into absolute animals. A magical performer.

If you have a chance to go to one of these small shows, do. I suppose that goes without saying. He said at the end that he was going to make these O2 gigs the best he has ever done. I find it hard to believe that it could be better than this, but with Prince anything’s possible.

- A big thanks to Anna who looked after me at the gig. I was alone sad

Don’t know if she’s an orger or not..?
