Prince is a baaaad man! That aftershow was AMAZING!!! Completely blew away Thursday night's HOB show. Sheila came on stage and played a little guitar and a little water bottle. And get this: Wendy came on stage and played on a few songs, including Girls & Boys!!!

This time, the doors did open at 12am. Club members got in first, and we all had to wait for 2 hours (including the last 45 minutes of watching the roadies set everything up). John came out and tweaked his drum set and then started playing. I knew from the get-go that The Rainbow Children was going to be the first song. Every band member got a chance to solo. We didn't even see Prince until 15 minutes later!!!

Anyway, my mind is all fuzzy on the exact order of the setlist, but I think it goes as follows:

The Rainbow Children (instrumental)
Whole Lotta Love
California Love/More Bounce extended jam
Bambi (instrumental - I guess it might have been weird if he sang the lyrics in front of Wendy)
Shake Your Thing (?) led by Maceo Parker
New Orleans jazz jam
Girls & Boys
Peach
Alphabet Street
Houseparty

I know there were others. Someone help me out! But every song strecthed and twisted and turned. They bled every last note out of these suckers! Prince was in a great mood! Dancing around the stage, letting the band have fun one minute and then the next, seeing if they can follow his lead. It was awesome!!! Even though the HOB was like 110 degrees, it was just great to give into the sweat and shake what momma gave ya! It seems like Prince was giving LA a proper goodbye after 5 sold out shows. Hopefully he'll come back so we can do it all again.

Anyway, the only sour note were the non-members. First, alot of them were getting impatient at waiting so long. Uh, hello? The band played until almost midnight at the Staples Center. What else do you expect? And second, I actually had two guys booing behind me when the band left the stage before the one and only encore!!! THEY BOOED!?!?! After seeing Wendy and Prince together onstage after all these years? Are you kidding me??? A bunch of people around me (including myself) told them to shut the f*$k up. But they whined "He didn't play any of his songs! He hardly sang at all!" So we told them go see the Staples show. The aftershows are for jamming!!! Man, what idiots!

Other random thoughts before I go to bed:it looked like Wendy felt a little out of place jamming with band. She only took one solo, and she was looking to get out of it as fast as she could. I guess that's to be expected since this band has been together for over two tours now. The show started at 2am and went ended about two minutes before 4am (when the permit expired). I heard Eddie Murphy and Jessica Simpson were supposed to be in the VIP section, but I never saw them. Also Bruce Willis (Bruce Willis?!?) could be seen sitting at the back of the stage at the end of the show. Maceo tried to grab him onstage, but Bruce didn't budge. He knew this was Prince's house.

Anyway, great show! The sound was amazing. Hopefully they release some of the these tunes, if not the whole CD, on the club. It was that good... Good night!

Reminds of me a time when I saw George Clinton and Parliament Funkadelic in March 1999 at The Fenix Underground in Seattle. PFunk jammed for a good 20-30 minutes before Ol' Maggot Brain came out with a bowl of cherries in one hand.

Yeah, that was it. You would think I would have remembered since we kept singing it back to Maceo for about 10 minutes!!! Also, there was an instrumental Blues tune in there as well... I'm still on high...

Great review Joe! I'll never forget the wonderful shock of seeing Wendy take the stage last night and jam toe to toe with P...the funk was thicker than peanut butter!

BTW the bluesly intstrumental was the Jimi Hendrix tune "Villanova Junction," which Prince played right after "Bambi." This tune is also known as the "Woodstock Instrumental" because Hendrix only played it one time in public - at the Woodstock Festival in 1969. Prince was channeling Hendrix last night BIG TIME!!

Thanks BayNPG & LA Bump Squad folks including Bobby, Hillbilly, Raul, Kevin T, j7, and Chris G, for setting the positive funky vibe! You helped make this LA experience so cool for everyone this weekend. PROPS & pounds all around...

OK, my original intention was to post when I got home, but I didn't get home til after 5am so my plan didn't work out. Anyway, what can I say that wasn't posted above? Uhhhh, freakin brilliant maybe? Show started at 2am and I sweat like a DOG til 4, but when you're watchin a show like that, who cares! I knew that when P came out with that devilish grin on his face that we were all gonna be in for some surprises.....and soon they started walkin out on stage one by one. First Sheila, not with her timbales, just alone. Throughout the show, she sang, (alone and with Wendy at times), she strapped on a guitar, played tambourines, and played Blackwell's drum set while he took some well deserved breaks. Then, a little while later, Wendy came out and that's when all hell broke loose razz

By the way, that was Dan Akroyd workin at the front of the NPG line with all the HOB security people right? Knew he was the owner - didn't know he ever had stints WORKING there eek

I was there and the show was amazing!!! Especially considering Prince played Staples until almost midnight.

Next time though I guess I would choose the concert OR the aftershow because it took AN HOUR from Staples to HOB because of the traffic on Sunset so we were at the back of the house at HOB. sad I was closer to him at Staples (Row 11).

I don't know how Prince does it! He danced his ass off at both shows. I screamed and danced at the concert but I was exhausted and HOT at the HOB but still in awe.

BTW, the concert was outstanding. The band has really come together and Prince is playing extended versions of songs instead of snippets (I went to the 3/29/04 show at Staples). I am SOOOO glad I got these tix for 6/05/04. It was not the same show at all.

I must say the highlight of my night at both shows was Led Zeppelin, Whole Lotta Love. Prince rocks with that high falsetto and excellent guitar playing.

How does he do it? All that energy at both shows????? Seriously, any ideas???

Also, WHO NOTICED THE NEW SHOES?? No more heels for our Prince? Looks like some special made tennis shoes or nurse shoes to the match the outfit.

I agree with JoeZeo, I think Prince really appreciated L.A. We gave him a lotta love.

I was wondering where your review was... I knew you would have the proper setlist...

Anyway, that was Dan Aykroyd out front. He was out there on Thursday night too. I think he was out to kiss the cop's ass because so many cars kept coming down Olive, which is a tiny street and adjoins the Mandrian hotel (which houses a happening place called Sky Bar). Dan actually took a couple of digital pictures with the motorcycle cops, and then was joined later by someone who looked a lot like David Crosby, fresh out of a shower (meaning his hair wasn't all nappy)... Was that really Crosby?

I think it was David Crosby too. Man he is unattractive! What was Melissa Etheridge thinking? biggrin

Other stars I saw - Bruce Willis, Jeff Probst (host of Survivor - as tiny as Prince!), Rachel Hunter.

Hmmm...didn't see any of those other famous people, including Crosby. But, I'm sure it was him (how many people look like that?).
