npgmc: a nation of thieves?

what do y'all make of this paragraph from the "essay" on the site?

"What is 4 sure, however, is that, in spite of its many claims 2 the contrary, the recording industry has yet 2 provide evidence that P2P is actually detrimental 2 music making as an artistic endeavor, and even as a commercial venture. It is worth remembering, 4 xample, that sales of music CDs actually increased when Napster was at its peak, and declined after Napster was abruptly shut down. Even economists who thought that file sharing “should b” hurting the recording industry r now xpressing their doubts, based on what they say is simply not happening."

uh, OKAY...so, princey, can you provide some evidence that file-sharing of YOUR songs leads to decreased revenue for you and/or the club? or are YOUR songs held to a higher standard (in your mind) than other artist's songs?

anyone else wanna chime in on this? i mean, yeah, prince is always about saying one thing and doing another, but this seems to be such a recent essay and such a STUPID, illogical action on his part. i know all about the ol' "no publicity is bad publicity" deal, but i'd rather someone hear about him b/c he released a bad-ass record, not 'cause he's suing a fan.

and WHERE IS OUR DAMN MUSIC, YOU THIEVING BASTARDS???!!!

They (Prince or people working for him at PP) shouldn't use Princebonics for essays, it's boring to read & stupid

That last comment really wasn't necessary. it takes away much of the power in your argument.

The argument you made makes sense i think. if Prince says himself that the 'sharing"of music over the internet may very well not be such a bad thing... then his latest action indeed seems to be contradicting the statements in this npg commentary.

however, if prince intention is / would be to release a Xenophobia celebration set to the members, then matthew is screwing up his exclusive release plans. Since matthew didn't want to listen to a cease and desist letter, but decided to continue offering downloads, while absolutely not respecting princes wishes... this may be the reason why prince sued him.

Sharing music over the internet illegally is one thing and sharing music WITH PERMISSION FROM THE ARTIST is something entirely different. Prince has GIVEN PERMISSION to share several MP3s in the past. Clearly he thinks it's a worthwhile thing to do. But you are COMPLETELY missing the point if you think this argument is over P2P filesharing.

It is now and always has been about letting the creators decide what happens with their creations.

Well, the NPGMC has given me a splitting headache! I joined last oct.for a year, membership would have been up in oct.2001 and was told in march 2002 my membership was up in the first part of March! All i was able to recive for the whole 2002 year was a few downloads! I was so bummed i cried. I sent many e-mails, all the responses were the same, nothing we can do, renew now! I sent at least 10 e-mails and they just quit responding. I saved all my mail 2 them and all responses. So yes i was ripped by the man i have been dedicated 2 for , many, many years!I was going 2 renew this year , but after reading about all the trouble everyone is having, NOT!!! I am such a true fam, and have never downloaded a bootleg, but it seems thats the only way 2 get his music these days! P if by chance u read this, get the NPGMC shit 2gather PLEASE! Annastasa
