"The Time" synth sounds

I want to get those synth sounds used on the first few Time albums (and by prince on 1999, Purple Rain etc.). Especially on songs like "Cool", "The Walk", "Chocolate", etc

I know they used Oberheims.....but wha'ts an easy way to re-create them now?

I have a Yamaha P250 which has a lot of sounds in the XG bank but I haven't really found any that sound right (then again I'm fairly new a this). I also have a really old Esq-1 by ensoniq.

Any way to get any of these sounds out of these machines? if not, what's my best bet that's not too expensive?

It seems like they used mainly:
  • a synth horn sound (as in Gimme some ho-hens!)
  • some kind of organ mixed with the horns
  • as well as a fat, analog type string sound usually used to play higher octive lines over the other stuff.

I use the Nord lead 2 from the swedish
company Clavia:
www.clavia.se
I put up my own tracks here:
www.soundclick.com/magnusgoethe
The nordlead 2 is a great keyboard 4 creating all sorts of funky sounds.
Don't B fooled by "Nordlead 3" since that is a completly different type of synth
& not an upgrade 2 the "2"."Nordlead 2" is the keyboard if U want some fat sounds.

With any synth capable of old-school subtractive synthesis (you know, saw-tooth waves and square waves going through a low pass filter with resonance, maybe octaved and detuned) you can create those kinds of sounds. I can even get those kinds of sounds out of my roland D5, but if your synth has saw-tooths and squares + a low pass filter you can do it.
A roland Juno is pretty cool for that if you can get hold of one, or an oberheim matrix.

Yes, the Juno synths are very good in recreating those types of sounds. Nord Lead and Nord Lead2 are suitable too. If you have a PC then you could also consider the Pro 5 synth VST plugin, as it emulates the Prophet 5 synth and this synth is closely related to the old Oberheim synths...
RIP Prince: thank U 4 a funky Time...

Prince used a Oberheim synth on The Time's albums. Not sure if that sound can b emulated, mayb if u use a similar sound & apply effects 2 it. I'd like 2 have that cool sound too, but I think the only real way 2 get that sound is 2 find an old Oberheim synthesier.

E is right on the money. Also try adding a flanger or phaser guitar effect to the keys (yeap guitar efx on keys) if you want more of a edge to the sound. Just a touch, you may need to customize it.
