Prince Interview on "The Early Show"

Prince talks exclusively with CBS News' THE EARLY SHOW anchor René Syler. In this rare television interview, the unpredictable and sometimes controversial Prince speaks candidly about politics, racism, the war on terror, and the music industry as a whole.
Prince tells Syler that he embraces female performers and actually prefers working with them. "Female musicians tend to listen better, and they don't let their ego get in the way of music. I have a really great bass player -- Rhonda Smith. I notice that she doesn't think it's important for her to take solos and play too much and drown out the other instruments... she's a joy in the sense that she understands that her instrument, the bass, really is spelled B-A-S-E as opposed to B-A-S-S."

25 years later, Prince is still making music, but says his focus has shifted away from the sexually explicit lyrics from the past. At age 46 he now says, "The simple fact is that I'm not alone on the planet. There are others around me just by virtue of the children that come to our concerts and things like that. I have a responsibility to them to perform in a manner that I would like my children to be performed in front of. So, that said, I just want to be the best human being I can be...on stage and off."

This, to me, sounds like, "She won't upstage me."

Jesus, great to see that the same geeks on here are still desperate to find a negative angle on the slightest thing Prince says or does. The man just cannot win.

Hey fellow Prince fans,

I'm new to the org, in fact, this is my first post. I'm really excited to talk shop with y'all. I am a 24 year old whiteboy who can't dance but tries his hardest. I think this comment P made could be taken either way. personally, sounded like he was saying she's a team player. I think every musician in the NPG is incredible, no one has to showboat in order to show me how good they are, it is evident in from their talent and enthusiasm on stage. I was at the Chicago show June 26 only to have my heart broken, but i'm making the road trip up on august third for the rescheduled show, eye can't wait to see some of you there.

I appreciate everyone's response on this one. We do know that Prince is a little egotist. But then again he may have a point about showboating. And I do feel he has definite chavinism issues .


I agree with the comment about Larry Graham being on stage and probably be allowed to show-off. But I haven't seen that so I don't know.


But one thing I do think about his band is that the purpose of the band is to support his ideas and compliment him. I do think there was more individuality with The Revolution.


I mean I know it's HIS band but it's nice to let others share in the spotlight harmoniously.

I do wonder about this.
