From: The New York Daily News

I received this e mail today from a reliable source; although he didn't include a link I'mj sure this hearsay was printed in Today's Daily News:

Purple jazz?

Good news for fans of The Artist Formerly Known As Funky: I hear Prince is heading back into the studio, this time to record a jazz album.

"He doesn't want to be known for just one style of music," says my snitch. "He wants to show his versatility."

Preparations are underway at the Purple One's Paisley Park studios in Minnesota for the CD, which he is set to start recording at the end of next month. My tipster says collaborators are set to include jazz stars Wallace Roney on trumpet and bassist Matt Garrison.

Prince is currently touring to support his latest offering, "Musicology."

This I will believe when I am holding the cd in my little paws.

Do any of you think that Prince should give up on jazz? If it's going to have vocals it might be cool but his instrumental jazz seems a little...mediocre. It might make a diference if he worked with jazz musicians but I just can't get excited about his instrumentals albums.

AGREED! But let's keep in mind, this article doesn't look like it was written from facts.

Anxiety

he was talking about putting out a jazz album on blue note records this fall...so it could very well be true. i really kinda like the idea of him spitting out a little jazz joint between his pop records. what's it hurt? i mean, if he were like kate bush and he hadn't put out an album for over ten years, i might be a little annoyed...but we get shitloads of music from the man all the time, so like whatevah.

I don't mind him putting out more jazz albums, but let's face it, they haven't been that successful upto now. Before he put out 'Xpectation' and 'NEWS' I thought it would be great to hear a full jazz-style album from him - but they're are just lacking something, not sure what. Like he needed to work harder on them and experiment more rather than just recording some jams with a couple of friends over a day. I thought the C-Note jams were good though.

Jazz tinged albums like the Rainbow Children are the way to go I think, not full on jazz fusion.

Anxiety

I don't think he releases them to be successful commercially - I think they're more for him and for the fans of him (and of that style of music), and they're meant to be part of an experimental "work in progress". Sure, his instrumental stuff hasn't moved many copies and most folks don't even know that this work exists, but N.E.W.S. was nominated for a Grammy last year, and that ain't exactly a sign of failure (even though he didn't win, of course).

Oops. Just wanted to say sorry to Handclaps for having started a new thread about this article (you locked my thread too fast to do it there, Quickdraw! smile). I try to check the forum before posting stuff but I guess I missed this one this time. neutral

As far as a possible jazz album goes, I dunno yet what I think of that. I'd have to wait to hear it and then decide. Could be great.

He can put 'em out all he wants (jazz albums, that is)....I just won't pay for any more of them. He's too slick, and too tied to "pop" melodies to really pull off jazz...at least so far.

Oh, fuck all this. I've stood up for Prince time after time (great ... now I'm doing Cyndi Lauper). I like the horns. But I was REALLY rooting for a rock album. Musicology is more jazz than it is funk or rock. So he's following up a jazzy album with a jazz album to be diverse? Whatever. rolleyes

I heard he was going to release Xpectation on Blue Note records. All this buzz about an all instrumental Jazz album, could be the album we've been bumpin for 2 years. I haven't exactly heard that it would be 'new' material.

It'll be a Jazz album with Lisa and Wendy...Kills two Rumor birds with one stone. Then we can all bitch again about how it's a jazz album and a waste of a reunion.

I personally don't see another Jazz album coming out. That would kind of piddle away this year's hot streak he has going. Plus he already has done 2 recently. Unless he's carting around Xpectation...I can see that. But another Jazz album??? I could be wrong and I usually am.

Cuz a lot of his fans have been waiting for it since Purple Rain. I don't care about being called a "niche" fan. My favorite three Prince albums are Purple Rain, Lovesexy and Rainbow Children. I wouldn't say that fits the "niche." But it would be damn nice to hear a rock album from P. Not something slapped together like Chaos & Disorder, but something he really puts his heart in. If his heart isn't in rock, anymore, than the album ain't gonna, and shouldn't, happen. But it's still a nice fantasy for some of us.

A new Jazz album? Interesting but I like Rock and his Guitar stuff better. Jazz is alright but well I like stuff that ya can Dance and get Wild to. Jazz is too Subdued for my Taste actually. I like ya Know I like Rap and Goth and Rock/Punk/Alternative. He worked on Jazz with Madhouse. I'll buy the cd but like I said Jazz is NOT MY Favorite Music. He wouldn't be selling out arenas but he'd have Intimate ONA places again.

I can't wait. It's amazing 2 me that some1 who can play so many different types of music can make such fantastic jazz music. I know that it is not popular 2 the masses, but the music itself is killer.

Well, his musicology tour in my opinion was mostly funk and jazz and a little bit of pop. But I don't think he will lose too many fans as he gained so many through this tour. I think whatever he decides to do after this tour, he will be successful anyway. If American fans don't appreciate his upcoming jazz album, I am sure his fans overseas will truly appreciate it smile smile
