IMHO Why Prince was Booed off Stage

Now that things have slow down a bit I would like 2 share my story with u. When I joined NPGMC, Prince Org, and Housequake, I wanted 2 tell this story. So let the truth be told.

My 1st time seeing Prince live was at the sold out Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum in 1981. I worked part time 4 the Coliseum and Los Angeles Sports Arena for years. I was 1st introduced 2 Prince by my male friend who at the time was really hyped up about this new kid. When I finally saw Prince on TV my curiosity was totally satisfied. I really didn’t know anything about him other than him being fine as hell. He was so young and adorable. Loved that gorgeous look, loved the voice and loved his attitude on guitar.

In 1981 word was out that Mick Jagger and the Rolling Stones were coming 2 the Los Angeles Coliseum. We were well informed that this would be a sold out event. During that time the Coliseum seating capacity was holding 100,000+ people. I don’t know if this was the Stones 1st time performing in Los Angeles, but it was their 1st time at the Coliseum 2 my knowledge. This was a tour in the making. The fans were hyped. Prince and the Revolution were on that line-up 2 perform. I totally wasn’t interested in any other artists that performed that unforgettable day but Prince. Everyone that worked that event wanted 2 see this young new upcoming kid name Prince. That’s all we talked about. I was so freakin excited about getting the opportunity 2 see him in person 4 the 1st time.

It was a sold out event. The gates were scheduled 2 open that afternoon, but due 2 the capacity crowd of 100,000+ people, they had 2 open the gates early that morning just 2 get people off the streets. People were camped outside the Coliseum the night before. Traffic was backed up all around the Coliseum; cars on the freeways were bumper 2 bumper, young people walking, running, driving and screaming from there cars waving Stone flags, trust me they were coming in from all directions during the early morning hour and it was truly an unbelievable site seeing all these fans.
We watched these young and middle age adults bake in the sun all day. Due 2 the over whelming crowd and the gates opening early, it made the day a lot longer. The performing artists that were schedule 2 perform were far and in between acts. Later in the afternoon the crown became very restless and impatient because they came there for one purpose only and that was 2 see there hero Mick Jagger and the Rolling Stones. No alcohol beverage were sold or allowed in the stadium. The majority of this crown was young and you had a lot of people dropping pills, doing acid, smoking marijuana and what ever else they could get high on. Believe me a lot of those people were so stoned they were passing out and the heat didn’t help at all.

The very last group 2 perform before the Stones was Prince who was fairly new and upcoming. All the employees working that day was excited and anxious 2 see him. Once we heard he was getting ready 2 perform; we all left our stands and ran down the tunnels 2 the stadium. Prince and the Revolution was sounding awesome when all of a sudden a few people started booing before u knew it everyone was booing. Here we are wondering what the f%__k is going on. The media really rip Prince up by LYING saying he was booed because of his performance and the people weren’t ready 4 his dress appearance. That was a LIE. 2 this day I will argue anyone down regarding the booing. I witness that sold out event of 100,000+ restless, bored, impatient group of young and middle age people who weren’t ready 4 a beautiful black man 2 rock their world. The natives were restless, drugged, wired up and ready 2 party with there hero. Remember these were Stone fans that waited all day and night 2 see them perform not some unknown musician name Prince. It was getting late and the fans already knew Prince was the last act before the Stones came on. So once Prince and the Revolution came on they felt booing him off stage would bring there hero on faster, absolutely nothing 2 do with Princes performance. Timing is everything and if Prince had come on much earlier, that never would have happen.
When P and the Revolution left the stage, P shouted in the mike “GO JACK OFF”. I was totally impressed with his choice of words and they were totally perfect 4 that rowdy ass crowd. He stormed of stage with his trench coat swaying from side 2 side and those tight ass bikini underwear, leggings or boots whatever, and I be dame if I didn’t fall in love with him that night. I was so disappointed in not seeing him perform. Once Prince left, another long drawn out intermission came before the Stones landed on the Coliseum grounds in a Helicopter. By that time the fans were rowdy, wild and excited. Mick addresses the restless crowd and announces his disapproval of their behavior towards Prince. Timing is everything. Timing was definitely a factor in this case. It was very rude but nothing 2 do with Princes performance because he never really got a chance 2 perform. I read many times during that era how Prince was booed in Los Angeles because people were not ready 4 him. Prince if you are reading this story I hope it shed some light not that you really care. But 4 all you Prince Fans like myself, I hope you understand the truth about the only time in Princes Life where he was booed off stage. I only witness the 1st day of the Stones concert. It’s been so long ago that I forgot the Stones performed another night here but I only witness that 1st night. I later found out that Prince wasn’t going 2 tour with them after what happened here in Los Angeles but was talked into returning.

I remember Los Angeles Times saying that the same people that booed Prince off stage were the same people waiting in long lines 2 see him perform at the Forum when he toured here for the Purple Rain Concert in 1984. I was there opening night and the ticket said wear something Purple, believe me I had never in my life seen so much purple. The Forum is all white stucco, so when they put the purple florescent lights all around the Forum it became all purple LOL it was so much fun and the outfits the men and women wore was unbelievable. Purple was everywhere. .U even had men dressing like Prince. Then you had so many Apollonia wantabees. I mean the people let it all hang out. Everyone was happy and having big fun looking at one another. It was diffidently a show and tell night. Yes it was one of the most memorial concerts I ever attended.

This is a remark I found on the internet from Keith Richards. A perfect example of how the people reacted out of jealousy towards this black young gorgeous funk rocker lol who has the last laugh now:

October 9-11, 1981.] Prince has to find out what it means to be a prince. That's the trouble with conferring a title on yourself before you've proved it. That was his attitude when he opened for us on the tour, and it was insulting to our audience. You don't try to knock off the headline like that when you're playing a Stones crowd. You'd be much better off just being yourself and protecting that. He's a prince who thinks he's a king already. Good luck to him.
- Keith Richards, 1983, commenting on Prince getting booed after opening for the Stones in L.A.

See Keith lied because he wasn’t even there when Prince went on stage, so he had no idea how P acted. P was still very shy and coming into his own then. He had never been in front of a crowd that large. So making that statement imho was out of pure jealousy just like the majority of the crowd that booed him off stage that night.

That was a very insightful story, and for that I thank you. But are you sure it was the Revolution he performed with? In '81? That's all I need clarified, since it kinda threw me through a loop...

Oops! Thanks for correcting me on Prince Band. Like I said I was just really getting into him at that time so I truly apologize for that mistake. Was his band called Champagne at that time? Was that the same band that performed with him on American Bandstand? Andre, Dez, and Gayle and I forgot the other band member’s name? Any way thanks 4 correcting me on that one wink

This is news 2 me. You could be right it’s been so long ago. Back in the day I read many articles where this particular performance was always brought up and never did I read where he was booed the second time around. I have since search the web and no one ever mention that he was booed back 2 back. According 2 the news article I read P performed 3 songs that second night. eek

I think, one thing that is remarkeable, is that Prince didn't let this bad experience get him down. He could have just thought, well, live gigging isn't for me, I'll just stay in the studio from now on where it's safe. But instead he didn't let it get him down, he practiced his live technique and ultimately became a master at it.

But it must have bugged him. At one of the London Emporium aftershows, he comments on it. And that's like 15 years later.

I think Prince was booed off due to racism and mainly homophobia. He definately had a gay appearance and was singing "Jack U Off".

The same audience that booed him off the stage stood in line for tickets to "Purple Rain". Prince had the last laugh.

I read about it in the book "Possessed: The Rise and Fall of Prince". According to the book, Dez said he was booed off the first night. He said the audience was not ready for a song like "Jack U Off". He said Prince was ready to leave town and forget about the second show but was convinced to come back the next day. By this time, all the people that had attended the first show had told their friends about it so the second audience not only booed him but also came with fruit and other objects to throw. Dez said the other band members tried to console him by telling him that this was not his type of audience anyway and Prince responded by saying "Just wait, they will be in a few years".

I'm always glad to hear when people question how truthful this book is. I read it last Thanksgiving weekend. Even though there were parts in the book that I found very interesting, there were also parts that I found quite disturbing which made me look a Prince in a whole different light than I had before.
