omfg I can't believe there are so many terrible Prince covers! I do agree with the post earlier about TLC's "If I Was Your Girlfriend", I like their cover.

But the rest of these... they make me

As a rule of thumb, no one should be allowed to cover a Prince song!!!!

Agreed! I've never been thrilled with any of them and most are downright awful.

Sorry but the Foo Fighters cover rocks! Ani Difranco does a great job as well. They both took the song and changed it a bit but not too much. I also love D`angelos cover of She`s Always in My Hair! Ever heard Tori Amos do Purple Rain? Now that is pretty bad. I mean who would even try to cover Purple Rain?

Latoya Jackson-Private Joy... mad

But you gotta love her rhyme

"I strangled Cleopatra
You been mine ever since
If anybody asks you
You belong with Toy!"

I'm starting to wonder if the Jacksons are actually LESS talented than the average family.

Latoya is only as bad as she is because of how good Michael is. Ya know, you have to balanace out the musical karma.

Jordan Knight (of New Kids On The Block) turn that song into a slow jam. It was cool to me.

Now when Ginawine & Timberland screw up When Doves Cry, THAT was a huge mistake. Even Prince hated it!!!

Ha! That's true. They run the gamut--from super talented to super un-talented and everything in between.

Why is it that certain artists' songs lend themselves to quality cover versions (Bob Dylan, Bruce Springsteen, and The Beatles spring to mind ), and some artist don't (such as The Rolling Stones or Led Zeppelin) ? Prince seems to fall into the latter category. Perhaps his recordings are so definitive and unique that any other versions of the songs pale in comparison .

I really think it's a matter of the people who DO do the covers. The Foo Fighters cover if Nikki, I like it, but it's such a literal reproduction of the song. Tom Jones' version of Kiss, I also like a lot, but because his version is SO FAR from the original, it's a brand new song.

Maybe, as hardcore Prince fans, it just seems harder to HEAR the songs by any other artist. Me, I love hearing a Prince cover, especially when there's very little similarity to the Prince version.

I don't remember the name of the CD, but one of the artist was Ice T doing head. I just thought the whole CD was would make a better coaster tha something to listen to. One song I think was actually really good was TLC's version of If was your girlfriend. I like that one because they pretty much kept it like the original.
