The description 'Prince songs which charted for other artists' is a much better title than the existing: 'Hits written for others' - for example, he didn't write 'When Doves Cry' for Ginuwine.

BTW, is Prince still actively giving tracks away to other artists, as he did in the 80s and 90s? Are there new Prince protegees/associated artist in the making?

I'm going off of memory here, so anyone correct me if I'm off a little:

"Nasty Girl" reached number 9 on the US R&B chart, it missed the Hot 100
"Sex Shooter" reached #19 R&B and #85 Hot 100

Also, US Hot 100 and/or R&B chart positions for some of the songs you listed above (and a few you didn't):
MC Hammer, "Pray" #2 for two weeks H100
Martika, "Love...Thy Will Be Done" #10 H100
Martika, "Martika's Kitchen" #90 H100
Monie Love, "Born 2 B.R.E.E.D." #89 H100
Beyonce ft. Jay-Z, "'03 Bonnie & Clyde" #3 H100 (contained lyrics from "If I Was Your Girlfriend")
New Power Generation, "Girl 6" #74 R&B
Me'Lisa Morgan, "Do Me, Baby" #46 H100, #1 R&B
MoKenStef, "He's Mine" #7 H100 (sampled "Do Me, Baby")
Sheila E., "Sister Fate" #39? R&B
Elisa Fiorillo, "On The Way Up" #27 H100 (written by Fiorillo, Prince, and Levi Seacer, Jr.)
Elisa Fiorillo, "Oooh This I Need" #90 H100
The Family, "The Screams Of Passion" #63 H100

And while Prince had no direct involvement, the following 'protege' singles charted:
Sheila E., "Hold Me," #3 R&B, #68 H100
Wendy & Lisa, "Waterfall" #56 H100
Wendy & Lisa, "Are You My Baby?" #27 R&B
Wendy & Lisa, "The Closing Of The Year" #53 H100 AIRPLAY
Morris Day, "Fishnet" #23 H100, #1 R&B
Morris Day, "Oak Tree" #65 H100
Vanity, "Pretty Mess" #75 H100
Vanity, "Under The Influence" #56 H100

Sheila E., "Hold Me," #3 R&B, #64? H100 (not sure about it's Hot 100 peak)

Prince was involved with "Hold Me" ? Are you sure?

Prince got a credit for the 'lift' - otherwise, he didn't write it, so including it in a list entitled 'Hits written for others' is misleading at best.

I meant to include it in the "Protege" list at the bottom of my post. Sorry! It's been edited and amended.

And Jordan Knight's "I Could Never Take The Place Of Your Man" never charted on Billboard's Hot 100. Perhaps it reached no.31 on Radio & Records' chart?

it was also on kasey kasem american top 40

in most cases it would be a bit different from billboard but would be in the ball park

i am goin to remove thisrntry until i can find it on billboard H100

whats the story behind Hold Me , as theres a version of it circulating with Prince's vocals , who did write it, just wondering why Prince laid down a version for himself really .
I heard Love Bizarre playing in the background in a shopping centre yesterday too , was pleasantly surprised , maybe Cardiff is funky after all lol

There IS a song called "Hold Me" that Prince DID write. It was released on a Jevetta Steele album(can't recall the name). Totally different song than the one Sheila released on her third album.

While I'm aware Prince did not write this song for the group Zoo , and therefore not strictly a included in "Hits written for others" their cover of "I wanna be your lover "(2005) I think deserves a mention.I have no idea of it's chart position duh I was delighted to find both that cover and Inaya Day's cover of Nasty Girl in HMV recently. Fantastic to see that truly great music never dies music

A new version of "The Glamorous Life" has hit the charts by ex-soapie star Melissa Tkautz.

There's also another version doing the rounds by T-Funk featuring Inaya Day. T-Funk is Aussie DJ mrTimothy and it's obvious now Inaya Day is into Prince with her second cover.

Actually, it was a struggle for him to give away music to friends when he was with Warners.

During the interviews he did for the Rave album, he spoke openly about wanting to give away music to the Dance Theater of Harlem, in one case, and the company shutting him down on that. He also has some great recorded stuff that he's done with Miles and with Lenny Kravitz, but there are all these issues about which companies and estates should get paid.

It's a funny thing... you're sitting in your own damn studio playing music with your friends and you're not allowed to let anyone hear it. Ain't that a bitch?
Come here, babe.. yeah...

I am about to enter into contract negotiations myself, I hope I don't get screwed like that. The truth is that I am not rich and I love to make music..so they got me in bad place. I could make music unrestricted and be broke as hell or get paid and be a slave.....

featured the Prince inspired track "Stand Back",

he didnt write it right?? is this the song she wrote while she listened to little red corvette

it reach #5 on the H100

http://www.inherownwords....ndback.htm

I phoned Prince out of the blue, hummed a melody, and he listened," says Nicks of the latter hit's gestation. "I hung up, and he came over within the hour. He listened again, and I said, 'Do you hate it?' He said, 'No,' and walked over to the synthesizers that were set up, was absolutely brilliant for about twenty five minutes, and then left. He was so uncanny, so wild, he spoiled me for every band I've ever had because nobody can exactly re-create - not even with two piano players-what Prince did all by his little self.
