Prince Nominated for Songwriters Hall of Fame

Date: November 2, 2005
Source: http://www.songwritershalloffame.org/

Those writers elected by our members will be inducted at our 37th Annual Induction Ceremony and awards presentation on a date in 2006 to be announced.

Prince (performing)

* When Doves Cry * Manic Monday * Purple Rain * Nothing Compares to U * Little Red Corvette

Few artists have created a body of work as rich and varied as Prince. During the '80s, he emerged as one of the most singular talents of the rock & roll era, capable of seamlessly tying together pop, funk, folk, and rock. Not only did he release a series of groundbreaking albums, he toured frequently, produced albums and wrote songs for many other artists, and recorded hundreds of songs that still lie unreleased in his vaults.

Beginning in 1980 with the release of the masterpiece Dirty Mind, Prince released nearly 20 hit albums including the incomparable Purple Rain released in 1984. Recording his own songs, Prince had over 50 hits on the Billboard charts including the top ten's "Little Red Corvette", "Delirious", "When Doves Cry", "Let's Go Crazy", "Purple Rain", "I Would Die 4 U", "Raspberry Beret", "Pop Life", "Kiss", "U Got the Look", "Sign O' The Time", "I Could Never Take the Place of Your Man", "Alphabet St.", "Batdance", "Thieves in the Temple", "Cream", "Diamonds and Pearls", "7" and "The Most Beautiful Girl in the World."

Prince has also written many hit songs for other singers including "Manic Monday" a #2 hit in 1986 for the Bangles and "Nothing Compares 2 U" a #1 hit for Sinead O'Connor and one of the most popular recordings of the 1990's.

woot!

So he is going to perform: When Doves Cry, Manic Monday, Purple Rain, Nothing Compares to U, & Little Red Corvette? Kind of an odd combo, but I'm excited to hear him do Manic Monday...has he performed much live? (I've never heard his version.)

Also, I always find it surprising that a lot of people don't realize he wrote Nothing Compares 2 U...it is on the Hits, after all.

Yay Prince! biggrin

okay i just realized he hasn't won the nomination yet edit...

but who cares...Go Prince. yay!

The check. The string he dropped. The Mona Lisa. The musical notes taken out of a hat. The glass. The toy shotgun painting. The things he found. Therefore, everything seen–every object, that is, plus the process of looking at it–is a Duchamp.

No, for clarification, I think the word "performing" around Prince's name and songwriter bio and others who are "performing" state that these songwriters actually wrote and performed these songs and other hits over the years like Neil Youmg, Pete Townshend and Janis Ian, among the others listed.

As you can see "non-performing" (bottom half of the list) are these people who wrote great songs over the years but had others perform them. One of the non-performer/composers mentioned in the current list -- Alan Menken -- is popular among the Disney movie fans for composing/assisting in creation of such memorable movie song titles like "Colors of the Wind" from the Disney animated movie "Pocahontas," which was performed by Vanessa Williams.

Now, don't go gettin' your undergarments in a tizzy ... lol lol although it would be cool if Prince performed. But it might be just another elegant evening where he receives an award and mixes and mingles with those in attendance.

Wow. This is going to be a tough one for Prince.

Consider that there are only two awards for performer/songwriters (as opposed to three for non-performer/songwriters, like Will Jennings).

And other nominees include Fleetwood Mac, Neil Young, and Peter Townshend.

eek

I'm just saying. I think the voters will figure a) his chops are all that (people don't think "songwriter" when they think of him) and b) he just won the RRHOF last year. Plus, what is up with Manic Monday being up there? For goodness sake, that was such a throw-away song for P's standards (i know it was a hit, but..)

My thoughts.....
Come here, babe.. yeah...

BEAUGARDE

He deserves this award & so many more. In many ways Prince is not respected. This award will make people see him in another light. Thru the 80's and 90's P has always been there. Good or bad, right or wrong the man has created a mass of emotionally charged strong jams/gems that will be re-made & sampled 4ever. Truly a legend, he is!
