I'm honestly surprised some people don't like this song. It is simply hot as hell nod

I truly don't understand it either. This is the type of Prince song people here, me included, have been dying for and when he FINALLY does it, there are a few that think he's gone backward or whatever. But the difference between a few years ago and now is more people are loving it than hating it. I don't think I've seen the org so unified about a Prince song before and I've been a member for almost 7 years now. It's really something to see biggrin .

Some songs Black Sweat reminds me of:

Silicon (production)
Hot Thing (echoed drum part)
Da Da Da / SOTT live (marching drums)
Kiss (minimalism/vocal performance)
Undisputed (spoken part)
Love4OneAnother (from GCS2000 - high synth sound)
Let's Work (lyrics)
Glass Cutter (overall feel)

Any others that come to mind?

If the song supposedly has no melody, why is the chorus (I'm workin' workin' up black sweat) stuck in my head?

Vive le Linn-Drum.

I cannot wait for next Tuesday to buy the single!!

Thank you! I can't get that out of my head for the life of me. It is an addictive song and that for me is where Kiss and Black Sweat are at their most similar.

I don't dislike the song - it is pretty funky, then again, I quite liked most of Rave anyway. I think just like Te Amo that it is crying out for a guitar solo or extended jam at the end - it just feels too short.

I agree. It's pretty hot and "Te Amo" was good but lacked something...So far, so good with the album. I already like it better than "Musicology". Who knew that prince would do a sick, funky jam like this.

I was listening to Howard Stern and he said he thinks Prince finally hit the wall, and I heard the part of the song he played....Robin was on the fence until the chorus and then she said she would pass. I kind of agreed until I saw the video and heard the song. I dug it. I hope radio is kind to it...It's possible.

Booyah, "Hot Thing" came to mind when I first heard this!

I'm kind of surprised so many people think this song will be a hit but I think I agree...It's the hottest single he's released in years. Originally when I saw that he released a second single so soon after the first, I thought it was dumb but look at Kanye West...."Diamonds" wasn't excatly a hit but if you got the right song at the right time....This one might bring him back to the singles chart...I could see it selling well.

I like it. Nothing mindblowing, but a strong single - Club ready, too, and that's important. Definitely one of the better singles he's chosen since... well, in a long, long time.

It's good. however, Prince has TALENT. So why waste himself on poppy computerised RnB when he could be making proper music. Remember Bambi? Everlasting Now? Joy In Repetition? Reflection? Endorphinmachine? PURPLE RAIN??

It is a good song, and with the correct promotion it WILL be a hit!! but Prince should leave this stuff to the black eyed peas. he has nothing to proove.

But overall 7 out of 10 = good.

Let's hope he keeps the deeper/real stuff for the album. wink

cool

BTW: it reminds me of something off "Rave Un2 The Joy fantastic" confused

Yeah, this is generally what I feel - It's got the Rave/High/2000 sound.

And like you say, Prince is genre chasing, this sounds very current - and I'm not a fan of current US chart music.

For which reason it will probably do well.

FOR ONCE!! we agree... lol, lol this day will go down in history pray

Black Sweat is too FUNKY! This song should a club banger is dj's get a hold of it. Definitely a hot song and I love Te Amo Corazon so this album is looking and sounding real good. I can't wait for the album to come out. Has a nice classic Prince feel to it like an 87 to 89 vibe to it.

This song could be mixed with Tick Tick Bang. Some of it reminds me of it.

I been so excited with how this week turn out to be that I only had two hours of sleep yesterday. And this excitement doesn't ends as most of us going to see him on SNL tomorrow.

glad to see you're finally happy with the music! biggrin I still loves ya even tho you hate on ATWIAD and Parade hug

yes i am so excited. lol I dont remember feeling like this with musicology or anything he had put out since 1996. wow talking about ten years here.
also I luv you too baby hug even if we are on different level in regards to ATWIAD and Parade. But ironically some of this does remind me of Parade era a bit.

Its a decent song. Definitely like it more than Te Amo Corazon. But I was expecting something with a little more UMPH to it. Maybe seeing the video will give me a greater appreciation for the song. Personally, the last minute of Beautiful, Beloved & Blessed sounds funkier. But of course, I'll buy both singles when they come out...

Replace that whiny, played-out, late 90's synth with some layered horns and this is a personal hit with me. That synth makes my hair stand up. It's too much and too stereotypical to recent pop music.

It would be nice to have a song that is generally "modern" sounding, may play well with the kids, and introduce the joy of a brass section to kids who have never heard that type of funk.

That's just my opinion. I could be wrong.

I agree 100%. The song is good, but NOT with that synth. That sound gives me such a headache, and I always feel like it makes a song seem kinda half-assed.

imho, we've had alot of horns from P over the past 20 years. The horns could take an album off and I wouldn't miss 'em.

The difference might be as simple as there being 20 years of Prince's musical influence soaking the popular music landscape when "Black Sweat" is released, so what you hear in that song is heard all over the place...as where there were only 2-3 years of possible Prince musical influence when "Kiss" came out. Yes, Prince could have decided that since everyone is taking his sound and co-opting it as their own that he should go off in another musical direction...and in fact, he did. TRC, One Nite Alone and N.E.W.S. is evidence of that. But in my eyes, I'm not exactly shocked or disappointed in the fact that the sound you hear in "Black Sweat" is the sound he developed and made popular, and because of that he may desire to revisit it...it's no different than John Fogerty putting out "The Old Man Down The Road" in that patented CCR style that he created and populated in the early 70's. He wasn't trying to copy or catch up to anyone...he was just being John Fogerty. The only difference is that his style didn't absolutely drench so many aspects of pop music afterwards like Prince's shit did, so it was easier to hear a new release by him and appreciate it as evidence that he can still put out songs like he did 15 years earlier...and we let John Fogerty be John Fogerty without the cynicism attached.

excellent synopsis. As of now, I don't think that will make me like the song lol but, you're definitely right. I think I just hate it when he goes off into those other musical directions a la TRC, NEWS, ONA , it's seemingly appreciated more by the casual fans than the core folks who were listening 20 - 25 years ago. Because of the resurgance in the 80s sound, I know his influence is prevalent once again. I'm just kind of baffled that he chose to go for radio with this new single that pretty much sounds just like everything else that's already being played to death.

I sincerely hope that this single is bait to catch new listeners and the album proves to them what sets him apart.

I don't understand when U're talking about"those other musical directions".
Wasn't TRC close 2 Crystal Ball ?
Wasn't NEWS close 2 Madhouse ?
2 examples 2 show that P was already in2 this kind of music in the 80's.

Hell, no...not even close to one another in any way, shape or form...

Wasn't NEWS close 2 Madhouse ?

Only in that they were both instrumental CDs...Besides, the Madhouse releases were done in addition to the standard official Prince releases at the same time...they weren't in replacement of them, like N.E.W.S. was...

Word. Give me some heavy bass, drums, and some kick-ass guitar solos from Prince and leave the horns at home. cool
The check. The string he dropped. The Mona Lisa. The musical notes taken out of a hat. The glass. The toy shotgun painting. The things he found. Therefore, everything seen–every object, that is, plus the process of looking at it–is a Duchamp.

I know I'm an old motherfucker...But still, I have my ear planted to what's going on in music scene because I'm in the business...But "Black Eyed Peas"????? That song has no connection with anything remotely BEP...To me it sounds like a bunch of dried up, nursing home-ready fans who have no idea what's going on in contempoary music (if you don't fit the description, no harm, no foul)...Seriously, I hear shit like "add some horns" and it drives me crazy...As for Pharelle, the man merely implemented P's mojo into the style and rhythm of the hip-hop age..."Black Sweat" is designed to do damage on the radio and in the clubs...Live horns would merely slow the track down...My opinion: The song is find the way it is...
