Exactly!!! No one should be able to argue w/ a straight face that Common, Talib, Mos Def, Outkast, Wyclef, and even Kanye West are bad for black music - they are hip-hop and have added something invaluable to our culture. I think what is bad for music generally - is the 50 cent, Master P, Ma$e, "Lowdown Boyz" kinda crap - that is all about the glamour & lifestyle and nothing about the musical style. I personally like Prince's attempts at Rap, and looping (I love Pope), and sampling. I love his rendition of "Shoop" - still had a pretty funky bass that can't be immitated by any of our contemporaries in the hip-hop world. I think he tried to get too far off his sound though - hiring Tony M for example. If Prince can do hip-hop w/ the prince edge; it'll be cool. But I worry he'sl ost that edge. Listen to Days of Wild 94' and then listen to "The Sun, The Moon and Stars" reggae rap at the end.

I totally agree with this. Why is Prince trying to sound anything other than Prince ???? For years I blamed Lenny Kravitz. He was like Prince's cool, good looking friend with all the girls after him. And Prince thought "Hmmm...I'm gonna jam like Lenny. All I need is a really loud guitar, a strut and a scowl and I'll have ALL the girls after me" At the time I was really annoyed because Prince was the guy who taught me that the only person I should ever be in my life was myself. With lyrics like "DO I believe in God, DO I believe in me" And then it occured to me that maybe Prince didn't have the self-confidence that I thought he had. Maybe he was just trying to get by in life along with everybody else. That's when I realised that I couldn't put any expectations on him. We look on him as like a leader and a guru, because when he's great he's like religion. We think he has this talent at his finger tips or something. But I suppose he doesn't always have the answers, just like the rest of us mere mortals. well said "I'll be the first one to admit that I am many things, but one thing I am not is ungrateful...thank you..." - Prince

Shit I had no idea Prince was dead.
He was setting the brits wards on fire just a few days ago, had just released a killer single called Black sweat, had done an incredible performance of a new song called Fury on SNL. What happened man ? Il n'y a pas de sentiment plus exaltant que celui d'appartenir à une nation si diverse, si libre et si douée pour le bonheur.

If anything white gate keepers are responsible for the decline in Black music obsessed w/ a quick buck from a dumbed down public. Great Point! People act is if there has been brilliant, creative music in the "Rock" genre over the last few years. Overall, the ipod public is being force-fed lame music of all types. Modern Black music hasn't killed Prince but Clear Channel homegenization and strict playlists have been devastating to all music.

More seriously, it is not modern black music and hip hop who have seen Prince declined at the end of the 90s.
It is a huge cultural change : the fact that majors have bet on disposable products rather than investing in young talented musicians. Most people do not appreciate anymore musicinaship. Few people care about a good guitar solo, a good bass line. Many young people want disposable music for the dancefloor. When Madonna picks a guitar in her last tour to play three chords, people go "woaw she is so talented". What can you say after that ? Having said that, there are as well great bands and musicians out there who are dojng their job, Big Boi and Andre 3000 being part of this minority.
