Glad 2 c his name on the album. This will help 2 sell the album as the uninformed ppl in a music store will just walk on by when they dont see his name on the front. Sounds simple but effective.

The black border frames the photo much better; the photo just on it's own, is not a album-worthy image. The 3121 cover is reflective of the cd format & artwork. I can't see it as a vinyl sleeve.

It's good to see his name blazened boldly on the top, too. I think it will actually help sales by getting noticed. I don't think Prince can count on just the back of his head for consumer recognizability. wink

I like this. Prince has a winner on his hands.
I'm not a fan of "old Prince". I'm not a fan of "new Prince". I'm just a fan of Prince. Simple as that

Was "Steve Parke" a real human being, or ficticious like "Jamie Starr"? If he's real, even he had to be shocked when Prince rubberstamped his "art".

Go to his website: http://www.imagecarnival....index.html

Scroll down the images in the left hand column to 'Press', then select the first article in the second column - that's Steven Parke.

It's prolly the final cover too. If you look at the scaling it matches the digipak dimensions, as its not a perfect square as on a jewl case insert. He's had worse fonts over the years and at least something about that cover and the styling reminds of the better vibes from the 80s.

it looks polished. it looks smooth and seamless. the "prince" font looks like it might even be a return to custom fonts. unlike the past few albums, this looks very polished and professional. elegant. iconic? hmm, maybe.

my only concern is that they please please PLEASE pass the booklet past several pair of proofreader eyes before it hits the wrecka stows.

Well, you're right though. But not just proofreading - remember the shoddy image manipulation from the Emancipation booklet? feeling ill Little Prince from page three had obviously inserted his pair of shorts in a very awkward way. lol

How could they miss things like that. "Here's a million dollar check, thanks for giving us an album, it will be in the stores the next month! Take a look at it? Pfft!" How can large organizations be so sloppy on anything that costs so damn much to produce, promote and manufacture? I just don't get it sometimes.

well, with prince i think it's a combination of control issues and his own mercurial nature. can you imagine trying to keep up with all the lyric changes from the time you got the original lyrics to the time the record's ready to go? it's no wonder his liner note booklets are rife with typos...but still, there's no reason a professional proofreader couldn't take one final look at it before it goes to press. it's not THAT big of an expense.

This was posted at the other 3121 cover discussion threads, so I might have been wrong about the dimensions.

livewire said:

GoldenGlove, it appears that the revised version of the "3121" cover supplied by Tangerine17, with the black border on all sides, has not been confirmed. In fact, when Tangerine17 posted this image at Housequake.com the following exchange took place:

BorisFishpaw: "I'm still convinced the 3121 cover will just be the original image, without any border or extra type (and I think it looks better that way).

We already know it's going to be released as a digipack, and the image is EXACTLY the right dimensions for this as it stands. Adding the border and type makes it the wrong dimensions for a CD (digipack or jewel case).

I think the image with the border and 'Prince' logo is for posters, ads and other promo material, but not the CD itself."

Tangerine17 replied: "you are probably right but this IS the one that shows up as the cover in the Universal system. I'll know when I see a printed sample next week or so."

Sounds like we'll just have to wait and wonder for now.

Yeah, on a second thought, those are the wrong dimensions. Just had trouble checking them out fully on a monitor this small.

I have to disagree with it looking polished -- am I the only one who is bothered by the fact that they couldn't clean up the yellow dot on that wall that's showing through the middle of the N in Prince? To me, this is a sign that he has people working for him who know software, but who aren't truly designers. It's one thing to know Illustrator and Photoshop and to be able to make things happen on screen, but it's another to stand back and look objectively at a design and be able to ask yourself, "What's wrong with this?" "How could it be better?"

The photography is nice, I think. The typography and attention to detail is what's missing, and has been missing in Prince's album cover designs for most of the last 15 years.

meow doozer! wink isn't the 'dot' just part of the wall on the picture, what i mean by that is, i suppose its left on because its part of the picture. i know what you're saying though, it detracts from the overall effect of the word 'prince', but maybe prince liked it that way.

either way, i have to be honest and say i much prefer it just being the picture, i really hope it is, it'll be much more 'iconic' if it is just that, just cos by sticking his name on it it looks, kinda cheaper, but just not as 'cool'. stick with the picture, but use the prince bit like T17 says, for the promo.

by the way T17, is this indeed the picture you'd seen a while ago that you weren't sure was the cover? what do you think of it, from what i remember you said you didn't like it?

thanks for the info.
