curious one they need to get a remix out to these dance clubs that a lot of gays run. If that channel is endorsing this single it means there is a market out there. Also can anyone confirm if MTV & or VH1 are still playing the video in high roatation? My gut says no because I haven't seen them posted here over the last week. It would follow the promotion of Musicology. Once MTV promoted the in concert special and played Musicology for 3 weeks or so they dropped P like a hot potato

I saw it on this morning on MTV. I also came across it twice on Sunday morning on MTV Hits, as well as a couple of times over the weekend on BET.

The video for BS continues to do well at MTV and VH1. It's #10 on both channels over the past week. Plays are up on MTV from 20 to 26 spins over the previous week and up on VH1 from 16 to 17 spins. It's up from 26 to 20 on BET and spins there are up from 6 to 7 over the previous week.

I guess people want to SEE Prince, but radio doesn't think that translates to people wanting to HEAR him. The video's very good and seems to have legs.

I went to a party on Saturday and Prince came up and one of the guys there brought up the BS video and then we all started talking about it. They all said they saw it and liked it, except my best friend but she saw the vid without hearing the song. Hopefully she'll like the song but the video is definitely being seen. I also told them that 3121 comes out on the 21st so you now I had to do my part on the promotional tip.

Make no mistake Universal is getting it played on these channels...and the fact it continues to play there (VH1/MTV) means to me that Universal has yet to promote it at radio. We may see it take off...there something that isn't making any sense here to me

That sure would be great if Black Sweat eventually gets pushed to radio but I'm not holding my breath. We'll see.

Universal has already pushed it on radio. They went for "Adds" in early February on Top 40 and R&B Stations

No Dice in St. Louis. I've written emails to PDs that more or less say the following.

"Any particular reason 'Black Sweat' isn't on the playlist? Did Universal's check to Clear Channel (or Radio One) bounce?"

We'll see what kind of vision these idiots have.

In my opinion, it's the best stuff he's done since '95. I can't imagine why a PD would not want to play it.

I still think a physical disc would really help the song's moment on the charts. The "e-single only" approach was kinda ill-advised if they wanted to start generating proper buzz.

Absolutely! I’ve been saying this for the past few weeks. Yes, physical cd sales aren’t what they used to be, but they can still account for something. First, it would allow for Black Sweat to stay in the Top 5 of the Soundscan chart. Second, it would definitely help it stay on the Billboard Pop 100 charts. As much as I hate to say it, charts are important in so much as they can help generate attention to an artist or song. The physical cd would allow that to happen. Given Prince’s audience age demographic, a physical cd seems like a no-brainer. Oh well…

in fairness his previous 2 singles, Te Amo Corazon and SST have both had physical singles, though it seems Prince doesn't really care (the PPs said a CD for SST was Universals idea and they pushed it).

But looking at them, they're still in the top40 singles sales in the USA, which is mental, especially for SST.
If single sales counted like they do in the UK, Prince'd have had 3 singles in the Top40 of the Hot100 last week, with Black Sweat at no.1 (airplay counts for zip in UK charts).

I think a CD single would definately help, along with a b-side (I'm a big prince fan but i don't bother with single track cd singles, and there must be a fair few like that, even more people who just don't buy single track singles anyway), released at the same time as downloads etc.

SST cd came out weeks after the downloads on iTunes, which came out ages after the downloads on the npgmc which don't even count towards charts. If all 3 came out at once and counted the song would have charted much much higher.

Kinda bizarre Prince seems to want to chart with his songs, but then doesn't do all he can in a sense. Maybe he's not too fussed about chart placing ultimately? If he was, he'd be releasing his own stores download figures to Soundscan and Billboard surely?

Don't bother. James Joyce is overrated and HIGHLY unreadable. If you try Joyce, I suggest a tab of acid to put the pieces together in his lit IMO.

U.S. Soundscan Singles Chart

1 BEYONCE CHECK ON IT
2 YEAH YEAH YEAHS GOLD LION
3 MADONNA SORRY
4 MINDLESS SELF I STRAIGHT TO VI
5 SCOUNDREL SQUAD SISTER FEAT. B
6 FLAMING LIPS W.A.N.D.
7 BUSTA RHYMES TOUCH IT
8 PRINCE BLACK SWEAT
9 PRESLEY ELVIS HEARTBREAK HOTEL
10 PRINCE TE AMO CORAZON

That song at #10 seems like proof of the power of a physical cd. Too much video airplay for Black Sweat to not have a cd in the stores.

thats unbelievable re: TAC, especially for a full price single track. i mean, its fantastic really and quite frustrating at the same time, like audience1 says, it shows the power of the physical cd single, but then we know its not being taken advantage of!

In the US, there just isn't any power in the physical CD single (unless you're on American Idol). I mean look at "Te Amo Corazon": it's been in the top ten of the CD single sales chart for months and it never even scratched the Hot 100. Physical CD singles just don't sell anymore. "Te Amo Corazon" is likely selling fewer than 1,000 copies and it's in the top ten. That chart is an industry joke and will likely be discontinued in the next 5 years, as digital single sales soar and CD single sales continue to dwindle away to nothing.

For everybody crying out for the physical release of "Black Sweat," which probably wouldn't contain any new remixes or B-sides...I just don't see the point.

which is why i'm so confused about this 'singles' sales chart, if TAC is selling so little yet being in the top10, which is most likely is, how come black sweat is in there when its not released? i can't believe there aren't 10 songs on iTunes selling more than 1000 a week that are 'singles' so why aren't they on there like Black Sweat is when thats just a download too? there seems to be no answer for this! :S

There is power in a physical cd. First, I could care less about the Top 100 chart, which is radio dominated. It’s all about getting the music to as many of his listeners as possible. Given the demographic of his audience, a cd made available in stores makes sense. Even if it’s only a couple thousand sold in a week, which is possible, it would be more than nothing. With an audience base that’s mostly over 30, you can’t expect to always kick ass on iTunes or any other internet outlet. Some “older” listeners are more comfortable walking into a store and purchasing a cd. Also, as far as Soundscan is concerned, as long as it’s being published then it has value. Being on any chart gets you some exposure.

On the satellite radio front, SIRIUS' Urban AC channel "Heart & Soul" (Ch. 51) continues to play "Black Sweat" in heavy rotation, and has just added Tamar's "Beautiful, Loved and Blessed" in regular rotation as well. SIRIUS was one of the few radio outlets I'm aware of that gave "Te Amo Corazon" regular spins, so they seem to be doing okay by our boy. Can anyone with XM fill us in on how the new Prince singles are being played there? I think this bears monitoring as satellite has been touted as the "future of radio", especially for those tired of narrow Clear Channel playlists.

Sadly, I haven't heard it once on XM. I've requested it a few times, but nothing (I think). Last week, I checked the Radio and Records website and saw the Sirius was giving Black Sweat plays. The same for another satellite operation, but I can’t remember the name. But nothing that I’m aware of as far as XM goes. Sad. More people should request it.
