Another question. Why is it so bad to do something familiar? Let's look at 2 legends who released albums in the last year and a half: U2 and Madonna. They both did albums that were "familiar" and critics loved or liked their CD's but when Prince does something "familiar" oh he done fucked up again. Why the double standard? Damned if he does and damned if he doesn't. The critics are going to say what they want but anyone who's been a Prince fan for even a few years should know that it takes a few listens to get the CD's good or bad. The first listen is not going to tell you much, even if you like it the first time out. It's all about us making up our own mind and I know I have already.

not a double standard. Madonna and U2 have always played it safe and released the same albums over and over, or only gradually tweaked their style form one album to the next to where a few albums down the road they had a completely new sound. it is expected from them.

but Prince has always been the risk taker, willing to experiment with new sounds and new styles from album to album, so it is disappointing, to some, to hear him play it safe to try and recapture mainstream attention, in their opinion. this is hardly a double standard.

Prince set his own bar and now has to live up to it. that is on him, not us. I'd rather Prince be great and fail to live up to expectations sometimes than be boring and meet lowered expectations like many other artists.

The review is very nasty, and I suspect hes not a Prince fan. In 3121 he plays it safe, theres no real ground breakers, but most of Princes hard core will still love it, and it dosent sound dated or middle aged. How can that falsetto sound middle aged. The writer has tension as he probably wants Prince to reinvent himself into someone like Andre 3000 or even Kanye West, whereas he won't. You want a Prince disc, with 3121 you get a Prince disc no more no less. Its Prince stripped back to basics and the writer dosen't realise that Princemania has just received a massive boost.
Besides I think Prince is a little scared and sick of experiments, they nearly ruined his career and he dosent do that now.
I dont think he cares about No 1 hits or competeing with Beyonce and 50 cent with the most chart hits bought by 12 year olds.

I don't know. I love the album. I can't really be concerned about critics, particularly ones who can't do what they criticize.

I just bought the album yesterday, and I love it too. I don't care about critics or fans who think they've got it right because they only like what they call "innovative, groundbreaking, etc, etc." Prince's music inspires me and uplifts me when I need it the most and just about any time. 3121 still does this for me. This funkilicious music has soul and vibrates heavenly songs. I have tried what some people call "innovative" and I haven't felt anything. Sometimes, I find such "recommended" albums plain boring and dry (example, Pink Floyd's "The Dark Side of the Moon").
