What a fucking asshole. If it is beneath him then he should not have done it. I thought he was a professional. It just shows how low his career has falling that he needs to do a show that he does not like. I hate that damn show and I did not watch it even with him on it.

This story is from contactmusic.com:

Pop superstar PRINCE kept tense producers of AMERICAN IDOL guessing after failing to show for his surprise performance during the talent show's finale on Wednesday (24MAY06) until the last minute. Show host RYAN SEACREST feared he'd have to fill in for the pop star when he still hadn't arrived at the Kodak Theatre in Hollywood for his live performance as the big reveal started. The US TV personality even stated, "No more surprises," just in case Prince failed to show - but then the singer walked onto the stage and wowed the crowd and millions of TV viewers. Seacrest recalls, "We're in a commercial break just before the surprise of Prince and he wasn't at the Kodak Theatre, so what do we do? "He walked on the stage 30 seconds before he was to go live, sings and was in his car before I toss to the next commercial break. He was there for a total of five-and-a-half minutes."

falloff lol

as much as i hate those shows...prince would have been a fool to have not done it....50 million people watching it or something!!...he still likes to sell records and remember, aint getting much airplay these days so i say he has to take it. he made his point about not liking the show and used it for his own ends...thats fine by me...we all know prince has more musicial talent in his left nut than all these so called singers have put together so i have no problem with it.

That's pretty cool that Prince got to meet all the contestants. Do you think Kelly Pickler and that Bucky kid knew who Prince was? You gotta wonder about that, since they both said that they had never heard of Stevie Wonder. hmm
RIP, mom. I will forever miss and love you.

...on the other hand, it makes him look like a complete prick (which we fans know he is quite frequently), but to the general public it could appear as though he never outgrew the impetuous brat image he garnered in the 80s.

Are you guys clutching at straws here? Does it matter how long he stayed? You seem to be looking for ways for Prince to redeem himself. Too late, he performed on AI, you'll just have to get used to that fact!

I was thinking, from the reports it sounds like he just turned up and did his thing. But there must have been a certain level of pre-planning and perhaps even rehearsal. For one thing, Prince uses the white light at the beginning to begin the performance in silhouette (very MJ, actually!) so he obviously knew that was going to be there. Also he must have known the distance from there to the mic, since he times the start of his singing perfectly. The camera work also is usually reheased - okay, a few times the cameras showed close-ups when they should have pulled back to show him dancing, but apart from that the camera work looked pretty organised. And finally, there was that strobe lighting effect when Lolita breaks down, so the lighting director at the very least must have had a tape of the music of the performance in advance to work out what the lights should be doing.

Anyway, the great thing about this performance is how wild the crowd went when they recognised Prince - obviously the surprise aspect and being gee-d up by all the previous performances helped. The surprise aspect seems to be one of the things that got a lot of people talking after the show.

Performance wise, Prince has done a lot of tv performances over the years and has set an incredible standard with some of them, such that many on here don't rate this performance particularly. But in the context of the show and surprise, I thought it was excellent. Certainly, I've heard many of these AI contestants struggle to stay in tune or hit a note, never mind exude charisma at the same time - Prince effortlessly showed them what real star quality and singing ability was all about (although of course he's had 20 odd years of practice of course!)..

This is a non-news event.

For all the slack that people give AI for being a commercializied piece of junk, notice that Prince still showed up, and took advantage of the the fact that tens of millions would see him pull this. Looks like "good business" to me, nothing more, nothing less wink .

Of course he did it that way. That's not "pimpin". It's certainly not "hit it and quit it" if you saw that bullshit "performance". It's Prince being a dick. As usual.

And the fact that he even DID American Idol proves how desperate the man has become in his old age to sell some records.

Good lord.

thinking about it, it does seem a little logistically improbable that someone could stroll into an auditorium and traipse on stage for a televised performance at the last minute. the 15 minute scenario seems a lot more plausible. if the band really was playing in the pit, i'm very impressed - "lolita" sure sounded like a backing track to me.
