"Old School" Prince Fan Back in the Mix - What Have I Missed

ok ppl, i'm an "old school" Prince head who stopped coppin' all the stuff he put out. i need yall to help me figure out what are the MUST HAVES that i missed. i have most of the studio albums. enjoyed 3121 minus the first and last trax, I didn't get Musicology though (the title track was okaay but Call My Name paled in comparison to similar oldies and a cursory listen to some of the others didn't grab me either), i loved TRC, didn't get Crystal Ball (was the third disc THAT GOOD?! or did it detract from a bonafied classic in SOTT), What's the highlight of ONA or is it just the "obligatory" live album? Is Exodus an actual album? And having heard about Days of Wild for years, what album did it finally show up if any? Is The Gold Exp. really out of print (i need to replace that). What are the other "essential singles" (as in good enough to have been released in their own right?) i'll stop for now, i think i've asked enough questions. but help a brotha out. my favorite record store for rare prince items in the area is no more, so i have to find a new spot.

The Crystal Ball set released in 1998 was not the same as the original 1987 3LP album.

I believe you can find more info on either in the FAQ above.

s Exodus an actual album?

Yes, the 2nd of 3 NPG albums, released in 1995.

A live version is available on Crystal Ball (Disc 3), the studio version that was pulled from 'The Gold Experience' remains unreleased (but circulating).

In my sig. are links to full discographies and info on unreleased projects etc, it's a good place to start for more info. smile

well, i guess i shoulda saw that coming, but nah it ain't even like that. i don't think to many "bandwagoners" copped TRC when it first came out, let alone loved it right away. i've been gradually re-integrating P into myself. certain albums were NEVER out of rotation. learning to find a happy medium and be okay with not having EVERYTHING there is to have. the bandwagoners probably have Musicology too, skywalker which i don't.

Thanks Nouveau, YOU'VE been quite helpful, i'll have to peep your sig.

Exodus is a must. Very funky and a ton a fun. Some real classic tunes including The Good Life, Return of the Bump Squad, and the impossibly funky title track. This one is the best of the New Power Generation albums imo. I am an ol schooler too...lost my way around the Love Symbol/name change time and Gold Experience (yep out of print) and Exodus were a BIG part of bringing me back into his music.

I personally LOVE One Night Alone Live. I still listen to this pretty consistantly. But I agree its not the best representation of that tour. However, since its the only official live album its a must imo.

There is also a live single of Days of Wild floating around...I got mine from the NPG club. I personally like the Crystal Ball the most, but this single is worth seeking out if you can pick it up cheap on ebay or something.

Nobody seems to give many props to "When Eye Lay My Hands On U", but that song's an underrated classic.

thanks a lot wonderwall for your very specific feedback. i'm learning that i can expect at 2:1 ratio on this forum as it relates to "real responses" vs. sarcastic or generic ones. one can't simply by everything at once. cool, i think i'll check for Exodus then. i've always enjoyed his funky stuff.

I take it back, 2001 was the last time he released anything of significance.

The Slaughter House and the Chocolate Invasion were both Jams. Must Have CD's!

did i also miss where he and mani were divorced? (if they were ever married) i remember reading an article around the musicology tour time and i didn't know he'd remarried after mayte, but the references i've seen of "mani" in the forums seem to point to her being an "ex" now too.

The Exdous is a great funk funny album. Probally Prince is his most George Clinton and the P-Funk All Stars mode.

The Gold Experience is a great album! as well, with some true gems!

The Crystal Ball - Amazing! worth every penny.

unforntaly you'll probally have to got ebay for every one of these albums. As i dont think any of them are still in print.

as far as The Chocolate Invasion (which has when eye lay my hands on u) and The Slaughterhouse... Well those where both NPGMC "albums" which where collections of songs realsed on NPGMC site. Since the site is no longer up. These have become the hardest items to get really. Since everyone is agreed in a legal agrement not to sell those albums.

Do you have Come? If not, you need to get that one. And a "best of" came out earlier this year: Ultimate Prince. Disc 1 is nothing new, but Disc 2 has 11 extended version/remixes--some of which were only previously available on vinyl or boots.

I also recommend The Slaughterhouse, but since Prince's official music club (NPGMC) closed in July you can't buy that album, Xpectation, or The Chocolate Invasion legally.

yeah, i have the Come album. Space, Letitgo and Pheremone are my faves on there. Hear there are some extendeds floating around of Space and Pheremone. I copped the Ultimate Prince CD, good to have some of the stuff i'd only had on vinyl on CD. it should've had I Would Die 4 U on it tho. awful Cream remix.
