Prince on The Time's albums

Did Prince play all the music on The Time's first few albums? I thought I've read on here that he did all the music, but the liner notes list the band members on each instrument and vocals.

Of course it has Jamie Starr as co-producer with Morris, but I don't understand why they wouldn't play the music. They were obviously capable of playing it.

Could someone please enlighten me?
He is exactly who we thought he was

If I remember correctly theres no way to tell who all played on those albums(Time, Sheila, Vanity etc.) . They were a group effort and P quarterbacked it.

Prince played all the instruments himself...Morris sang lead...In fact Prince recorded those songs with most of his own vocals for the original tracks...You can still hear his voice doing background vocals...

The Time was basically Prince (on everything) & Morris Day (on lead vocals)
What Time Is It? was Prince with The Time (Jam, Lewis, J. Johnson & Day)
Ice Cream Castle was Prince, J. Johnson & Day
PANDEMONIUM was Prince, Jam, Lewis, J. Johnson, Day & Moir
The way I look at it is Prince was the foundation (song writer, producer & unnamed band member) and he would allow only so much input from the rest of the band. Not because he was a tyrant but because to him, The Time, V/A 6, Sheila E., Jill Jones & The Family was just another way for him to release his songs. And it's because of that reason that most of soldiers left his camp. wink
