PrintableI always wonder at this point why, myself included at times, we even bat
an eye as to whether he is played on the radio or not. It will not change his standing nor will it increase his visibility in terms of gigs he gets or shows he performs on. Hell,it won;t even increase the size of advance he gets from a label. So, why do we care? So, i ask you, from the perspective of not having a HIT single; what has he missed out on besides radio play and what would that have gotten him if he had radio play? | |

You can't do flat fee distribution, because you do not know beforehand how many units you are shipping and where. Or let me put it another way .. you can do flat fee distribution but that is a guarantee it will fail. The distributor has to have a vested interest in shipping as many units as possible. Ship too many units and you loose money, but ship too few and you will loose customers because your product is not there at the time they had cash in hand. The market is not static, because demand is variable and unpredicatable. I meant that he's paying them X amount of dollars to ship and promote X amount of albums. My point was more that the label itself has no long-term vested interest in the one-off Prince album they're promoting doing well, because at the end of the day, they're just hired hands. What is selling 140,000 tickets for his UK gigs in 20 minutes then? Is that small? It's the equivalent of Prince selling out the Glastonbury Festival all by himself. | |

You are probably correct..But does it make a difference? If there is an event and the #1 selling artist at the moment is there and Prince is there; who gets top billing? At the end of the day, that is all that matters. Maroon 5 or whoever else is the flavor of the moment will not be the highlight of the event | |

prince figured out that his staying power is in his guitar, the song is no lyrical masterpiece but at the ripe old age of 49 homeboy has become a certified guitar god. he always had it but his public performances of the last 3 years (esp. RRHOF) took him into that "revered" catagory. guitar is a natural, gives him an opportunity to show off with the ax, the video flaunts the twins and his preserved youth. homeboy is back. | |

I didn't agree with the title of this thread until today. I was talking to my friend on the phone, a non-Prince fan, and she said that she didn't realize how much she likes Guitar. She said she really likes the Verizon commercials. This took me by surprise and it made me happy, because it is so hard to get my friends to listen to Prince. I'm thinking that if she likes the song, then a lot of other people will, because she listens to a lot of the music *cough*crap*cough* that's popular. | |

Question: Outside of the so call "fans" expectations of Prince is his music in the last 15 years been bad or has it been a lack of airplay and media gaga ? Prince has been blacklisted by certain companies IMHO .People complain about the quality of Prince's music but U2's music quality has dipped in recent years as well but you constantly see them topping the charts. I think both are producing outstanding stuff that is much better than the current musical offerings. What's the difference ? Label promotion and the power of that company in getting the music to chart. There it is right there.  I'm not a fan of "old Prince". I'm not a fan of "new Prince". I'm just a fan of Prince. Very well put! There are no guitar gods on the charts. Perhaps radio will embrace one. It's all about timing. Maybe now's the time for a guitar legend wailing on his ax to chart, and chart big. I've got a guitar that can part the sea. | |

It's nice to have a song that showcases Prince's guitar work a little bit... but personally I think the song is rather silly and not at all memorable. It'd be a funny little song if it was tagged on as a bonus track at the end of an album or something, but it sounds far too throwaway to be proper single. Makes you wonder why Prince is putting so much weight behind it really. It is so self-indulgent and moronic. | |
