Starbucks tried to sign Prince.....

Starbucks’ Entertainment CEO Ken Lombard told delegates at today’s MusicMeetsBrands conference that his company had "discussions" with Prince about the possibility of bringing the singer to the company’s Hear Music imprint, prior to the singer’s controversial Mail On Sunday deal.

Lombard said that Prince was just the sort of artist the label would look to sign in future, adding that the company expected to name its next big signing within the next two to three weeks.

He added that, had the coffee company signed Prince, it would have looked to have signed a tighter deal than the one signed by Sony BMG a deal which saw the major label annulling the UK part of its international contract after it emerged the singer had signed a separate partnership to covermount his album on The Mail On Sunday.

Lombard added that it was "unfortunate" for the industry that the singer had chosen to release his new album as a covermount. "I think it really shows that there’s a lot of challenges going on in the industry," he said. "However, there really needs to be a balance between something that’s fair to the artists but fair to the label as well."

I'm not exactly sure what this means. But Starbucks did have 3121 in its music offering for a big part of last year.

They wanted to release Planet Earth, but Sony/BMG beat them to it.

Starbucks is dipping its wick everywhere, not just coffee... they're also adding books and magazines. My daughter just bought The Police's Greatest Hits there (she works there). I bought Paul McCartney's new disc at Barnes & Noble, but it's on the Starbucks label...

That's the difference with the Starbucks label, you can still get the disc anywhere, not just Starbucks...

Not the same if you do like Garth Brooks and sign on to Wal-Mart's label, where you are exclusive to Wal-Mart only, and are not sold anywhere else... I pray Prince NEVER goes that route... I hate Wal-Mart! barf

Sounds like they need him, more than he needs them!

Why sign with another bunch of moneygrubbers with no interest in music? I hate Starbucks, Walmart, Gap, Tesco and all the rest of these super-powerful corporations.

I think they really miss Prince's point, despite making it repeatedily. Music should be 'free', not necessarily in terms of cost, but expression. What is a media or coffee company's interest in artistic expression?

God bless Prince and all that sail on him... you know what I mean

Personally, I'd be pretty happy with him signing with Wal-Mart. Right down the street from me, great prices, and if they did what they did for Garth, I'd be very happy. Great packaging, lots of music and another avenue to get Prince's music out there. No complaints here.

Here is what Wal-Mart says about it's Garth Brooks release:
"In 2005, striking up an exclusive deal with Wal-Mart, he released Garth Brooks: The Limited Series boxed set, which achieved Gold status in the first day of sales, becoming the top-selling music item in Wal-Mart's history. The boxed set also included the record-breaking and chart-topping, "Good Ride Cowboy," Garth's tribute single to the late, great Chris LeDoux, which reached No. 1 on the Billboard Country charts.

Due to the great success of the boxed set, Wal-Mart is set to release Brooks' The Lost Sessions, featuring six new tracks including a duet with new wife Trisha Yearwood, "Love Will Always Win," making the launch of the new disc Wal-Mart's second exclusive project with Brooks. Though not even yet released, The Lost Sessions has been RIAA certified as a Gold, Platinum and two-time multi-platinum album."

They are also selling a 5 DVD collection (don't know if it is exclusive or not but does it matter?). Now, what sort of fan would object to Wal-Mart doing the same treatment for Prince?

YOUNT!

wave I would... Wal-Mart is extremely controlling. Wal-Mart is also notorius for censoring the entertainment they carry. Prince got out of Warner Bros. for the very same reason (sans the censoring). To go back into an organization more controlling than the Purple One himself, is not a good marriage. Garth may have the numbers he wants, but he doesn't have the control... I bet WM makes all the decisions. I personally haven't purchased anything Garth since he made the decision to be exclusive to WM.

For politcal reasons, I don't even step into Wal-Mart.

I figure that Garth and Prince know a few more things about business than I do. If they feel it is in their best interest to go thru Wal-Mart, then I have to respect their decision and assume that they wouldn't set up a deal that would hurt their pocket or their control.
