Haven't listened to them in ages (and those mp3s are lord knowh where) but my memory tells me there were small differences: additional noises etc. Prince tinkering with the song like George Lucas tinkering with his movies.

The changes were in fact improvements IMHO, but small indeed. It is unclear whether those versions were tinkered with in 2003 for the TCI boxset or if they are unreleased alternate versions from when they were originally recorded (same with The Dance's recording dates). NPGMC listed the albums as being from 2001 on the online discography, even though they were released as albums in 2004, so this seems to suggest they are untouched recordings from that time, but does not constitute a proof.

While most were very small changes (and edits of swearing - sonofabitch) some were more than small changes. Sex Me Sex Me Not has an extended ending that kicks off where the NPGMC version stops, and includes another verse.
