Why the symbol album......

Hi guys, why the symbol album (1992) sold less than diamonds and pearls? why diamonds and pearls reached the double platinium status in the us(2 million) and the symbol reached only a platinium staus??? (1 million). I mean the symbol album musically its better than d&p? what do you think aboute it?

Probably because Diamonds & Pearls had four U.S. top 30 singles on it and is much more commercial. The only single to reach the top 30 from the Symbol album was 7.

prince was slightly more successful in the u.k, i think 'My Name Is Prince', '7', and 'Sexy M.F' all reached the top 10 over here.

U.K.:

Sexy M.F. no.4
My Name Is Prince no.7
7 no.27
The Morning Papers no.52.

The album reached no.1 whereas Diamonds & Pearls was kept off the top spot by Simply Red's Stars.

Diamonds & Pearls was HUGE here in Australia, cause he was touring here at the time. I think it's his weakest album though. prince is better (only just), but it did shit all here!

Even though 'Love Symbol' is a stronger album than 'D&P',I think it's clear why it didn't do as well...

***the rock soap opera storyline---I liked it,but it turned some people off and was heavily criticized by some reporters.

***wrong choice of singles?---the first single "Sexy MF" obviously didn't get alot of radio airplay...lol...,and the hip-hop posturing of "My Name Is Prince" didn't appeal to many people either. So,it was up to the third single ("7") to finally give Prince a Top Ten hit from this album.

***the album's title---this album had a weird symbol as it's title, which may have given Warners a hard time promoting and marketing it

***In my opinion, strong songs like "And God Created Woman" and "The Continental" should have been singles (after "7").I think the album would have done much better.

From an artistic point of view, I'd say Symbol album is indeed the best of the two. I love Love 2 the 9s, The Max, The Morning Papers, And God Created Woman, Damn U, ... to mention a few...

My two brothers aren't really Prince fans, but they DO think Symbol album is great, and they find D&P crap.
