Although even he had an embarrassment or two! ("Dancing In The Streets" springs to mind) But still, on the whole he has been remarkably consistent for putting out great material!

Seriously, the album will probably not be a blockbuster, but the only thing that should really matter for Prince is that a decent number of people buy the album and go to the concerts. Since he would still retain masters, he should make a nice chunk of change. Even though 'Rave un2...' sucked, I think that would have done better IF Prince and Arista had stuck by the album. Since Arista realized that it wasn't a hit album, they abandoned it, and Prince didn't even bother. A tour might have made it better for him financially. The press he has received surrounding the Grammy's, spontaneous jams, talk shows, and overall mass critical acclaim for his recent shows should give him a nice head start in bringing in some money. Whether or not you think it is a quality song or not is irrelevant because we have all seen that the public connects to a lot of mediocre shit and sleep on quality all the time. It just has to resonate with them in some way for them to like the song. Whether that be music, lyrics, etc. will vary. A great concert in the locations for which he will perform can improve the chances of him succeeding.

Actually, we have heard more than FOUR tracks from his new album:

SLEEP ON THE COUCH
and that other one I heard on the MELBOURNE show.

I actually never liked Prince songs after hearing them once or twice. I had to listen to most his albums like 10 to 15 times and they just get better and better. Songs i liked at first hear are usually the boring ones. With Prince u have to do ur best. Its not easy listening like Kravitz...Mr. Lenny is great live but his catalogue of songs is beyond boring.....

People who's only concern is for Prince to zoom up the charts have a teenage mentality and want to feel they are part of something popular in my opinion. SOTT only sold 1 million copies worldwide, it is now considered a classic, and one of the albums mentioned in RS top 500 of all time. If SOTT only sold 1,million worldwide, imagine what Dirty Mind sold at the time of it's release, which is also mentioned in the RS 500 greatest albums ever. Prince hardly ever pulled in groundbreaking record sales in the first place, with the exeption of a few albums. Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis once said that "Prince is entertaining himself, he does not care if you like it or not". This guy is all about the music first, and what ever kind of message he is trying to express at the time. He's been that way for years now. I agree that albums like rave could have been promoted better. However, people in general tend to get caught up in a lot of none musical factors. Record sells or not, this man is still a Icon and will probably have something out untill he dies. And compilations floating around even after we die. So enjoy.

Hey here's a novel idea. Why don't you wait untill you here the entire album. I think that's what I will do. I'm all for expressing your opinion, but stop and remember that's all it is. People who are constantly throwing there views out there as if they are fact must think VERY highly of themselves. I don't care how much an album sells. That is not an indication of it's value. Remember the Spice Girls? N Sync? Their music sold pretty damn well. What do you think of them? There is a double standard out there. If you never make it to the big time people will overlook that if they like what you are doing. You never sold 10 million albums? Big deal. But if you are financially successful but later can't repeat that they hold it against you. Answer this question:

Purple Rain is probably Prince's most successful album. Is it his best?
Is it your favorite? Is it better than Sign O the Times? 1999? Rainbow Children?

Remember, they started calling Prince a genius after Dirty Mind. That album only sold around 500,000 copies.

razz After 99% of America has long forgotten about the Grammys, Leno,Ellen.
razz After MTV has spun the "Musicology" video 2x, and chucks it it the archives.
razz After radio stations marroon airplay for the single for overnight programming.

MUSICOLOGY WILL flop because history PROVES Prince is incapable of having anything go smoothly! Not since D&P, anyway!

Prince can hype his tour and do all the talkshows until the COWS (MOO!) come home, but sooner or later he's gotta deliver the goods Joe Blow will take to the cash register, and he has'nt done that since 1991!

EVERY ALBUM SINCE 1991 HAS BEEN A "flop", WHY SHOULD "MUSICOLOGY" BE ANY DIFFERENT?

I agree. Prince has to ride the momentum if he wants a success. The momentum is already dying out and he has nothing to show for it.

The album should have been in stores to coincide with his TV-appearances. Two weeks later is two weeks too late. And if experience is anything to judge by, it'll be months before Prince pulls himself together and gets something out there. biggrin

doh! That's what I've been saying! Prince needs to get his shit together and get something out there now to ride the momentum. His shit is definitely moving too slow right now. nod

Yes, that JW influence is making his worldview appear very negative. He should shake it. booty!

Not to answer for Sly, but Musicology can definitely make it to the top of the charts. If the album is good then Prince just needs to play the music industry and market in the right steps with the right timing.. whether he and his doers have the business sense to do that is questionable.

who cares about Musicology going to the top of the charts? If Prince dont why should we. Look at whats at the top of the charts..BS!!! so does it mean because they're at #1 it is good music? HELL NO! when will people stop thinking that Billboard chart rankings are the end all and be all of everything.

New stuff, doesn't matter. We know what he can do/did, remember 1978-1994? No worries. He doesn't need to please the new jacks out there.
Cause in my possession there's a signed confession that says, I was the best you EVER had....too bad.
