A good thing that you got rid of the background brancches; but not to happy about the choice of fonts. I would use a combination of retro-lokking for musicology (Dalliance? Mrs Eaves?) and combine it with the more modern "base".
He should have gotten a better picture in the first place. The ones from that were used by sab for the Hawaii releases look more contemporary. You know; the one with the flashy shirt and then you can use the colours of the shirt in typo and background.

Or maybe a retro looking two-colour sleeve; like blue note records. I loooove their covers. Simpel, essential, just thebest.

i don't know how to add the text to the picture, but oh well - sometimes less is more.

Yamomma, good work! All of your mock-ups are better than the circulating image. I can't believe Prince's big "comeback" album has been saddled with that hideous cover.

There's a thread about the "Musicology" cover up now over at NPGMC, everyone should go tell 'em what you think. Maybe they'll eventually get the message that NPG Records needs a professional graphic designer to prepare their releases.

I definitely prefer the ones with a dark background.
Personally I think he should have used the dark reddish-brown background like on some of
the pages in the booklet.

maybe he can release 4 different covers kinda like The Roots did with their "When Things Fall Apart" album.

Better than the original! I would choose this last one or maybe the one of the brown background with the same font as this one!

I posted a thread over at the club earlier today simply linking to the Amazon.com presale page for Musicology - I included no comments or critiques on the album art, mind you - and the thread was deleted within minutes.

Which tells me either the existing "official" cover is a prototype, or else they're REALLY sensitive about their arts and crafts skills.

It came from someone over at housequake and a lot of the members are known for creating collectible artwork for "compilations".

I'm just curious if someone over at amazon just threw something up as a placeholder.
