a matter of taste: "Cinnamon Girl" folks vs. "Call My Name" folks

Alright PM&M'ers, it's time to stand up for what you believe in razz Here's what I'm asking:
    - first, state which side of the coin you fall on, i.e. which song you like better out of Call My Name & Cinnamon Girl. Please include how much you love or hate each one, ranging from "it's the best on the album!" woot! to "it sucks!" ill

    - Then please list your favorite songs from each Prince album.

Please forgive me if they're not in exact order & if I forgot anything just throw it on there. Also, there's a NPGMC vol 1 disc listed on his site. I didn't recognize this as a release since I got the songs one @ a time, but feel free to include that too. And if you wanna skip Xpectation & NEWS that's cool...

Why these two songs? B/c I feel like it fight j/k lol Seems like (from what I read here) those who love Cinnamon Girl HATE Call My Name & vice versa. I'm curious to see where your taste falls on other albums too - basically I'm just nosey & bored right now & I wanna see if your general taste sucks ass or not evillol

As for me, I'm on the other side of that coin & I ain't gon' be no punk! razz I think Call My Name is without a doubt the best on the album (with If I Was the Man In Ur Life a damn close second). Cinnamon Girl lis clearly the nut sucker of the disc - why anyone would want this one released is beyond me, it'd suck the momentum right out of the whole damn resurgence.

Alright, here's mine:

For You: My Love is Forever
Prince: It's Gonna Be Lonely

Controversy: Let's Work
1999: DMSR/Automatic

I prefer Call My Name. It's just a classic Prince bedroom ballad. The only thing missing is the Prince monologue a la 'International Lover', 'Insatiable', 'I Hate U' etc. I would have been thrilled if he had said something like "I once poured chocolate all over Sheila E. Or was that Morris? confuse"

As for my favorite songs off each LP:

For You: Crazy You
Prince: It's Gonna Be Lonely
Dirty Mind: Head
Controversy: Let's Work
1999: Lady Cab Driver
Purple Rain: Darling Nikki
ATWIAD: Condition of the Heart
Parade: Mountains
SOTT: The Ballad of Dorothy Parker
The Black Album: Rockhard In A Funky Place
Lovesexy: Anna Stesia
Batman: Vicki Waiting
Grafitti Bridge: Joy in Repetition
Diamonds & Pearls: Insatiable
Symbol: And God Created Woman
B-sides (from Hits/B-sides): La, La, La, Hee, Hee, Hee ( I do prefer the explosive mix)
Come: Dark
The Gold Experience: Billy Jack Bitch
Chaos & Disorder: Chaos & Disorder
Emancipation: Joint 2 Joint
Crystal Ball: Crystal Ball
New Power Soul: The One
The Vault: Sarah
Rave Un/In: Undisputed (the original)
The Rainbow Children: toss up between Family Name & Last December
One Nite Alone: Have a Heart/Objects in the Mirror
ONA Live: Joy in Repetition
Xpectation: Xogenous
NEWS: South
Chocolate Invasion: Judas Smile
Slaughterhouse: Golden Parachute
Musicology: Call My Name

ok, well first off, both songs are way different. obviously, those who prefer his more soulful styles will opt for call my name and therein lies the problem as far as single choice. the hard fact is cinnamon girl will get played on top 40 and adult contemporary. call my name will get stuck on adult r&b programming. i like both songs though i prefer cinnamon girl. the catchy, breezy, poppy sound disguises the importance of the lyrics. to say cinnamon girl would knock the momentum of his resurgence is just so wrong. he's released musicology which is a funky jam and shows that side of the album. to release another soul/r&b/funk song would be a mistake, i think. the record is diverse and the singles should represent that. call my name really is a perfect song and i have no doubt it would be a hit on the urban adult contemporary charts. in my opinion, it SHOULD be a hit on every chart. the reality, however, is that top 40 would not know what to do with such a sexy ballad. when was the last time d'angelo or maxwell was on top 40? cinnamon girl, on the other hand, can be easily sung along to. it also gets stuck in your head. and you know what? when your cruising in a car through traffic (or anywhere for that matter) you can sing your heart out to it. in the same way you could sing your heart out to sheryl crow's soak up the sun or fleetwood mac's say you will or no doubt's recent version of it's my life. honestly, since i love the entire record (well, i'm not crazy about life o' the party, but i like it) i don't care what he releases as a single in regards to my own personal preferences. my biggest concern is that he release a substantial hit. cinnamon girl has hit written all over it.

Call My Name. Best song on the album by a mile!

I haven't subscribed to the "Musicology is Prince's Greatest Album eek " and don't plan to. It's an average album. Not as good as TGE and certainly worse than TRC.

As for my favourites:

For You - Soft & Wet
Prince - Why You Wanna Treat Me So Bad?
Dirty Mind - WhenYou Were Mine
Controversy - Do Me, Baby
1999 - Little Red Corvette
Purple Rain - Purple Rain
ATWIAD - Condition Of The Heart
Parade - Sometimes It Snows In April
SOTT - Adore
The Black Album - When 2 R In Love
Lovesexy - Glam Slam
Batman - Scandalous
Graffiti Bridge - Joy In Repetition
Diamonds & Pearls - Insatiable
Symbol - The Morning Papers
B-sides (from Hits/B-sides) - She's Always In My Hair
Come - NONE
The Gold Experience - I Hate U
Chaos & Disorder - The Same December
Emancipation - (Disc 1) Somebody's Somebody, (Disc 2) Soul Sanctuary, (Disc 3) The Love We Make
Crystal Ball - (Disc 1) Crystal Ball, (Disc 2) Crucial, (Disc 3) The Ride
The Truth - The Truth
New Power Soul - Come On
The Vault - There Is Lonely
Rave Un/In - Pretty Man
The Rainbow Children - 1+1+1 Is 3
One Nite Alone - A Case Of U
ONA Live (concert) - Avalanche
ONA Live (aftershow) - Dorothy Parker
Xpectation - Xpectation
NEWS - West
Chocolate Invasion - Underneath The Cream
Slaughterhouse - Golden Parachute
Musicology - Call My Name

Favourite Ever Song - the one I couldn't live without hearing every day: Purple Rain (ONA Tour, Tokyo 18 Nov 02) or Purple Rain (AMA 28 Jan 85).

I really really really dig 'em both...in fact, there's not a single song on Musicology that I'm not digging...and my favorite/least favorite changes every hour.

Calhoun you hit the nail on the head here. Those two songs rep two very different type of Prince fans. I fall into the "old school" group of fans who want a soulful/funky Prince. Give me "Call My Name" any day. As for the list, I didn't include the "download only" or live albums. Other than that, I was pretty much able to cut and paste your list except for a few changes here and there. Seems our taste is Prince music runs very much the same.

For You - Soft & Wet
Prince - Why You Wanna Treat Me So Bad?
Dirty Mind - Head
Controversy - Let's Work
1999 - DMSR
Purple Rain - When Dove Cry
ATWIAD - Pop LIfe
Parade - Kiss

The Black Album - When 2 R In Love
Lovesexy - Glam Slam
Batman - Partyman
Graffiti Bridge - Question of U
Diamonds & Pearls - Insatiable
Symbol - 2 tha 9's
B-sides (from Hits/B-sides) - She's Always In My Hair
Come - Space
The Gold Experience - Shhhh
Chaos & Disorder - NONE
Emancipation - (Disc 1) Somebody's Somebody, (Disc 2) Joint to Joint, (Disc 3) My Computer
Crystal Ball - (Disc 1) Crystal Ball, (Disc 2) Crucial, (Disc 3) Days Of Wild
The Truth - NONE
New Power Soul - Come On
The Vault - NONE
Rave Un/In - The Sun. Moon & Stars
The Rainbow Children - 1+1+1 Is 3

I'm a first 3/last 3 guy....meaning:

Musicology, ICPC, A Million Days...On The Couch, Dear Mr. Man, Reflection
are my absolute favorites on the CD, in no particular order...the middle songs
are good, but I don't play them all the time.
After those 6 songs, I would place The Marrying Kind-If I Were The Man In Your Life
right behind. I love the way those 2 songs merge together, i'm sure Prince intended
for them to be a single song, maybe splitting them up for a possible 'singles' release.

Call My Name and Cinnamon Girl are about the same for me, strong songs, but don't
blow me away.
Thanks for the laughs, arguments and overall enjoyment for the last umpteen years. It's time for me to retire from Prince.org and engage in the real world...lol. Above all, I appreciated the talent Prince. You were one of a kind.

Well damn, I thought I would be able to say the Cinnamon people's taste sucked but I can't. We all have good taste, we're just a mixed bag when it comes to every album/single. So much variety across the board - that's pretty cool smile

I'm going for Call My Name. Only heard it twice now but I think i'ts a grower. Don't like the Betcha By Golly Wow effects at the end though. C.
