UPDATE on Prince 5-Channel Simulcast

The story below was posted on Entertainment Weekly's website today. I've copied the article into this message, as you must be a subscriber to EW to access the article.

Very Important Information: According to this article, there are interview segments are that are not the same in all versions of the simulcast.

Here's the article:

Purple Reign

Prince show will simulcast on five channels. MTV, MTV2, BET, VH1, and VH1Classic will air the same performance on Wednesday by Gary Susman

If you're watching one of Viacom's pop music-oriented channels (MTV, MTV2, BET, VH1, or VH1Classic) on Wednesday at 9 p.m. ET, you'll be able to choose from a wide variety of music specials featuring Prince, Prince, Prince, Prince, and Prince. In what Columbia Records (Prince's label) is calling an unprecedented simulcast, all five channels will air a 30-minute concert special to promote the recent Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee's new ''Musicology'' album. However, in a move that will tax your TiVo, all five shows will feature the same songs but different interview clips. See, who said corporate concentration of media ownership limits viewers' choices?

The show, which airs as ''Music and Words by Prince'' on BET and ''Prince: The Art of Musicology'' on the other four channels, will feature excerpts from a concert Prince performed last week at New York's Webster Hall, one of the impromptu club dates he's tossed into his current arena tour. Songs include the new ''Musicology'' and ''Dear Mr. Man,'' as well as a solo acoustic medley of his '80s hits. ''The support for 'Musicology' is wonderful. We're pleased to broadcast the 'Musicology' special throughout the Viacom music channels,'' Prince said in a statement. ''It is great to see audiences around the country embracing music again.''

See, you have to be slick about it. All the shows will be re-aired, especially on VH1. It airs Wednesday, Thursday and Friday. Some you can put VH1 off til Friday, watch MTV and BET WED. and Thu then you've seen them all. wink Now, watch me be wrong. Then I'll put my foot in my mouth.

I live in California and have Directv and Tivo. I can record 2 channels at the same time. Only MTV and BET have the special listed in the channel listings for 5:00 PM Pacific. Directv gives California the east coast feeds. Wull the other channel listings be changed also? I need my parenst to record 2 cchannels on their Tivo and Directv But I need to know if VH1 Classics, MTV2 and BET are on Directv in California at 5:00 PM or 9:00 PM. I know cable viewers in california all channels will be on at 9:00 PM.

Is this also going to be aired on MYV and/or MTV2 Canada ? Sometimes we miss out because of Canadian content regulations. Wish my man would just change his nationality.

Can someone tell me why it seems this thing is starting at 8:00 EDT instead of 9:00?? My TiVo yesterday had it scheduled for 8:00, and Sovembol's schedule says it's on at 8:00, too (unless he's in the Central timezone). So, at exactly time is thing starting on the east coast?

Who said that the interview segments would all be Prince? Could it be band members or other musicians?

I wondered about this as well. I am in NC. When I set my DirecTv last night to record this show, the program guide said tonight's show time was 8 pm on VH1 and MTV. There was no time listed at all for BET, MTV2 & VH1 classic. What gives??

MTV Networks, BET and Columbia Records announced that, for the first
time in history, MTV, MTV2, VH1, VHI Classic and BET will broadcast a
single program on the same night, at the same time -- a ground breaking,
30 minute television special featuring performances and interviews with
2004 Rock and Roll Hall Of Fame inductee Prince. The special will be
road blocked across all of the participating music channels, and will air
on Wednesday, April 28th, from 9:00 PM to 9:30 PM (ET). Check local
listings in your time zone for more information. Four of the participating
networks will air the special under the title Prince: The Art of
Musicology, while BET has dubbed their broadcast Music & Words by Prince.

Recorded before a live audience at New York City's Webster Hall, the
one of a kind television event features brilliant performances of
material from Prince's eagerly awaited new release Musicology, including the
critically acclaimed title track and the powerful "Dear Mr. Man." Also
included is an historic acoustic solo performance of a medley of deep
classics from Prince's catalog.

Check your local listings! I live in SF and subscribe to Comcast. VH1 and MTV are showing it here at 8 (and then there are reshowings later this week at different times). It isn't clear when BET is showing it.

i think the special is the same i'm gonna keep flicking thru all the channels but i don't think they'll be 5 different specials on at the same time. After all MTV owns VH1 and VH1 classic is a derivative of the latter. Why would Prince run different specials about the same event on 5 different channels that is highly unlikely. Chances are the event has been cut and edited and sent out to the stations to be simultaneously shown. Has anyone else thought of this or is everyone under the impression that if you only watch it on one channel you will surely miss something?

It's now time for today's "WHAT THE F@#K!" moment. On a VH-1 news posting about Lenny Kravitz' new movie, Barbeques and BahMitzvah's (I think that's the title), VH-1 compared the film in the following way: It's Woody Allen meets "Purple Rain". Hey VH-1 - WHAT THE F@#K?!?![b][i][u]

I only get BET in Canada. No trace of "Words and Music" (as it's supposed to be called on BET) or "The Art of Musicology".

If you know, please tell me.
