the "Party Up" "KISS" syndrome and Prince giving proper credit for songs

How often do you think Prince"acquired" music from people around him and took full credit for the song? Are there any song(s) you suspect Prince might have done this with other than these? Discuss.

"Kiss" ? Never heard that one, but the rumours about "Do me baby" are legendary.

Although, to be fair to Prince, there's a ton of great songs that he has never taken any credit for that he probably could (The Time, Sheila, Madhouse, etc...)

I heard that Dez wrote the music to "Little Red Corvette". That's why P let Dez record the guitar solo. "The Stick" as far as ASCAP goes, music written by Lisa. But that's not listed on the album. I wouldn't doubt that there was more. That's one of the reasons why Andre split.

here's another related question: does prince pay the people regardless of written credit?

I bet Andre Cymone could tell us some real good dirt if he ever decided to speak out.

Never heard the one about Little red Corvette, except that Dez wrote the quitar solo on it.

The ones I have heard are:

Party Up: morris Day wrote this - in return P gave him all his writing credits to the time albums.

Do Me Baby: Think it was Andre Cymon who wrote this one. Prince apparently "finished it Off".

Kiss: Prince wrote one verse of this on acoutsic guitar (there is a demo circulating, I have it) and gave it to Mazarati. They came up with the songs sparse drum beat which Prince decided to use when he took the song back off them, and duly completed. There is a drum arrangement credit to someone, I cant remember who though.

Soul Sanctuary: Cant remember the name of the bird who wrote this, but she is credited for lyrics in the Emancipation booklet. On a documentary I saw, she claims she wrote the melody as well.

Its rarley clear with Prince because I think he likes to create an environment where his musicians and friends can all share their ideas and support to his songs, and he will duly oblige if they have a song. Hes given away loads of songs without credit over the years, more than he has probably taken so it more than evens out.

I think Prince actually wrote the lyrics to "Kiss",it was more a case of him stealing the song's "arrangement" from David Z. and Mazarati.

Another thing is musicians "jam" and a jam could have turned into a song that was finished by Prince and these guys think they should have credit for the whole song.

You have to understand that "PRINCE" is a copyrighted name which includes Prince and his "BANDS",other artists, etc & if this is true all credits will fall under that copyright.

Exactly. Coming up with a bass line or something isn't really that special. What's special is being able to turn it into somthing magical and timeless, which is what Prince does. Miles Davis is the same. He didn't write "Walkin'" or "Footprints" but when you hear them, you know that it's STILL Miles's song.

Prince wrote Kiss....

David Z was working with Brownmark on the Mazarati stuff and came up with the groove.

Prince heard it and decided he wanted it back.

Mazarati did NOTHING.

David Z did the groovw.

Prince WROTE THE SONG and finalized the arrangement.

Oh, and if I hear ONE MORE PERSON say Prince wrote "Uh Huh" for Ray Charles I'm gonna send a herd of Buffalos after you.
He SAMPLED the commercial Ray Charles did in HIS song.
