Bob Marely the legend and Prince the musical genius

Do you think that Bob Marley and Prince have the same legendary status? In the cult kind of way, and the spirituality their music reflects I think so. They are both lyrical genius and I admire them both. Bob Marley was more political, about love, and god, and teaching us about ourselves and the system, but Prince's lyrcis are more sexual and teaches us so much about the deepness of love, as it is also more subliminal in every other topic. I also know that for one reason or another, one becomes a legend, but there's no doubt that Prince has already become one. What is your take on this? What do you Prince fans think about Bob Marely? I wonder if Prince admired Bob Marely's thinking, creativity, and style as many of us have in the past and still do.

Bob is a legend (See my top 10 artist list) but I find it hard to link him to Prince for similar traits.

As for Prince being a fan, well they both have album called "Exodus" and P has dabbled with reggae on tracks like Blue Light and Ripopgodazippa.

"Prince met Bob Marley backstage at the Roxy Theater after the concert. The meeting was arranged by Don Taylor, who was toying with the idea of having Prince and Marley record a track together. "What the result of this might have bee, however, I will never know", Taylor later said. "When we called on Prince he met us in this skimpy leopard g-string undergarment, which immediately aroused Bob's Jamaican macho feelings and so our stay was as brief as Prince's G-string and Bob's discomfort was shown all over his face".

Bob Marley already is a musical legend. Sadly, its likely P will not be considered one except for those of us who love his music. Too many are put off by his reclusive nature and his overt sexuality to see what may be the most brilliant musical mind in the last 50 years.

For an example...see Miles Davis. Another brilliant musical mind that people disregard due to his eccentric nature and musical tastes. This dude was before his time but many won't recognize that.

I agree with Codshort, Miles Davis is one of the most important artists of the last 50 years. He was always moving forward, stretching himself as a musician, searching for new sounds. As a matter of fact, it was Quincy Jones that finally talked Miles into playing some of his music from his lorious past right at the very end of his life. Miles influences exceeds outside of jazz into R&B and rock.

*** Bob is a legend and the verdict is still out on LIL MAN. Sorry ya'll, I'm a P fan too, but it is the truth.

I agree with you, so, so very much. But I think that in the long run, whether it's many years from now or not, he will get recognized whether its of any relevance or not because it's 'they' who pick and choose, but sometimes it's a total different thing 'for the people'.

I don't see Prince anywhere near Bob Marley. Then again, I don't see Marley any where near Prince. Marley, I associate with liberation and rebellion. Prince, I associate with integration and anarchy. They're at opposite ends of a struggle, or a journey. MAybe you go thru Marley to get to Prince. The intensity of their musical creativty may be similar, but they are separated too much by the sociology their respective eras and nationalities.

BTW I always likened Marley to Curtis Mayfield. Both sang songs of political liberation. Marley also covered Mayfield's "People Get Ready".

Then again both these mutha-funkas jam their assses. Put on "Jammin'" and "Housequake". Nice eh?

This is, this is... something new for me to make a comparation like this, or something.
Bob Marley and the Wailers have always been and are important in my life, the same as Prince only diffrent. Theyr definitly objective may be the same, theyr mission maybe have another way for to reach what we all want to have.

I love me some Bob Marley Music...what a wonderful human being~ Nothings Better then some Marley music in the Summer. In terms of the status thing....anything could happen. Both Marley & Hendrix died as they where still on there way up...the sky was the limit~ Elvis died when his career was at a low point. My thinking here is that Prince already ala Elvis, had tasted the top. & Prince now U can say in terms of his fallen status with alot of record buyers radio etc...is where Elvis was minus all the drugs etc etc...2 a extent..'the career folks'...(follow me now) lol... 4 Elvis dying the way he did in such shocking fashion 2 those on the outside, was the fuel that sent his popularity/status 2 the heavens...Sad but true....So yes I'm saying if Prince were 2 die now U would see a "huge interest" the world over....old fans no fans who ever....just because what he's built thus far is very respected, even if he ain't Mr. Pop Radio right now. His musical career as a artist and the many mystery's behind the man etc...who's 2 say that Prince would not hit Man-God like status like Marley has, as Elvis has....It's been said that theres something about when someone like this dies. In death normal people have become bigger or star like~ Bob is a genius a legend anyway U cut it dead or alive....same with Jimi~ But back 2 Prince & Bob...2 men born with music in there blood, 4 the times & ahead of the times..(Jimi 2) but sent here on different missions~ God bless the souls of those who are gone~ People have 2 show and keep the love more steady now adays and stop coming back 2 show that love when that person is already gone~ Sad 2 say...people these days are worse!

Prince will never be a legend in the way that Bob Marley is. Prince is among the most talented musicians in the past 50 years. he is the greatest showman I have ever seen. He can make me dance unlike anything else. I am in awe of his guitar playing and songwriting abilities. No question about those things. But did he invent funk? Does he have the power to decide a political election? Does he transcend music and speak to people all over the world? I would have to say no. That's not a jab at P or anything. I'm just pointing out the differences in the factors that makes them legendary.

Bob Marley was one of very rare few that transcended music and it's audience. Bob Marley was THE voice for any single individual, race, or nation that felt oppressed. Bob Marley became a very dangerous man in the eyes of Jamaican politicians. Here is a man who spoke for ALL people and he was not a politician. The rebel fighters of Zimbabwe used his songs as anthems during their fight for independance. His importance to the many nations, races, and individuals sets him far apart from Prince. On top of that, Bob was a pioneer of a new form of music. He accomplished all of this from a small third-world island nation that had only been independent for about 10 years and was stuck in political turmoil on the brink of a civil war. Pretty impressive. I don't think I can think of another musician that has transcended music like Bob Marley.
