Pick One Current Act that Others Should Know About

If you could pick one newer performer or group that others should know more about, who would it be and why? Of course, there are many to choose from, but limit it to one. My choice would be these guys:

Nickel Creek - simply put, I think the three of them are great musicians, they sing well, and they write beautiful songs. Though they've been a group since they were in their early teens, but under the tutelage of Alison Krauss they really came into their own as performers. They're put into that confining category of progressive bluegrass, but they're more than that. Yes, they are bluegrass, but they're got an earnest pop leaning that's crafted with nice harmonies. So far, they're released two albums - their eponymous debut and its follow-up, This Side - and are working on another.

Well, you'll know a little once you go out and buy one of their albums. smile Nickel Creek are only really popular within certain circles (i.e., critics, people with taste). I actually listen to very little new stuff, but I follow it to see what the kids like these days.

Mojave 3 make very direct, pleasant, easy-to-enjoy rock with elements of country and (don't gag) folk. They've released four terrific albums that occasionally show elements of their noisy past (two band members used to be in UK shoe-gazer group Slowdive) but mostly are filled with wonderful songs that could be enjoyed by anyone - your grandma would probably tap her toes to them and say "aww, that's lovely".

Isn't than an oxymoron? confuse

lol Just kidding. biggrin Yeah, I'm either too bitter, cynical, or just downright lazy to get into new artists usually.

Friends of Ken (FoK).

If you liek your Blink 182, Greenday etc etc. these are the boys (and girl for you).

Steve (the guitarist) is one of my friends from uni and teh whole band are excellent - we all went along to support them at their first gig when they did battle of the bands in a wine bar. They won and since then have gone up and up, playing festivals in London ETC

Lovely lads, dont take themselves too seriously and very catchy songs that, years later, im still humming and assuming that its from one of those huge bands when its from FoK all along

Great thread but I honestly cannot think of even one. If there is one, it is so far underground that I've never heard of them.

This sounds very interesting - I just checked their listing on the AMG site and saw that they recorded a cover of Pavement's Spit on a Stranger! I definitely think this warrants further investigation.

Listening to samples on her site now. She reminds me a little of Amy Winehouse.

A potty-mouthed British Nu-Jazz chanteuse. Her lyrics are quite funny. Her whole album is basically about how much her ex-boyfriend pisses her off!

I'm digging Mars Volta, Kings of Leon and Scissor Sisters right now. My hippie friend likes Nickel Creek and someone told me Madvillain is boring.
