ok, i'm not even gonna read the responses to this thread because i already know what they're going to be ("i'm gonna eat a steak now", "people are more important than animals", blah blah blah, SO original).

that said, once again, PETA fucks it all up.

what would i have done? i would have had an intelligent conversation with beyonce and her family about my concerns, and i would have politely let her know that i spent $XXX to win this auction for the purpose of having this conversation. no cameras. no "ambush". no publicity stunt.

when PETA pulls these stunts, they polarize people. that's not what's going to improve animal welfare (notice i said WELFARE, not RIGHTS). when PETA gets it through their thick, extremist, ridiculous skulls that advocating for people to do just a LITTLE to live a cruelty-free life leads to a lot more improvement than DEMANDING that everyone live 1,000% by their standards, THEN maybe they'll make a difference.

i say screw PETA. and i'm an 18-year vegetarian.
[Edited 6/16/06 6:38am]

PETA's not in it for the education. Those assholes are in it for the sheer cruelty, all they want is an excuse to be mean to people. They don't give a FLYING FUCK about animals.

i don't even think they're in it to be mean. i think PETA is more obsessed with its own visibility than it is with the messages they pretend to be promoting.

i love my leather shoes. all of them. i love my leather belts and fur lined coat and goose comforters and feather pillows. as far as i'm concerned, leather looks better on me than on a cow...or a calf...or an alligator...

peta (and many of its members) crack me up. they have crazy liberal social policies such as pro-choice on abortion but they are against pro-choice to wear an animal. seems to me their priorities are all sorts of backwards.

and thanks to them, i'm heading on over to ted baker today for some H O T shoes! (sorry, anx, its just too easy.)

First, I want to say eff PETA.

Second, it's pretty obvious from that video that Beyonce's parents are in control of her life. She retreated to being a child when confronted with a difficult situation. She's almost 25 years old and wasnt able to defend herself. Her mama had to do it for her. sad

I have no problem saying that I loathe PETA. It's the group I would love to see fall apart. They are so worried about animals yet treat people like shit. The same animals they want treated humanely would probably kill them with one strike. The problem is they have many valid points and if they weren't so damn confrontational and damn near crazy as fuck, more people like me would be more willing to listen to them but when they ambush people like Beyonce and splash paint or blood on someone who is wearing fur, then that's when all respect is lost. I wish there was a group that cared for children living in poverty or needing parents with half the fevor of PETA.

I remember a friend of mine had the best comeback line when verbally attacked for wearing her fur coat out in public she said:

"Yes I kill them and wear them and if there was a way I could legally skin your ass and make a coat out of you, I'd do that too!"

That poor child felt so traumatized, she couldn't think of any more mean things to say to my friend.

PETA is such a bunch of hypocritical asses running around in their leather shoes, using the leather handles of their dog leashes and other animal products that are made from slaughtered animals and they're running around barking about fur coats. Unless your ass is living out in the boonies playing Survivorman there is no way that you that you will not utilize part of a dead animal. I've had "vegans" bitch to me standing there in leather shoes talking to me about how they don't eat animal products - but it's okay to wear them. Shut up!

see, THIS POST is exactly the kind of mentality groups like PETA need to be addressing in a REALISTIC, PRAGMATIC way that addresses the concerns of people living in the REAL WORLD.

you're right - it's damn hard - almost completely impossible - to live in a modern world without using some kind of product with SOMETHING animal-based in it. food, clothing, tools, you name it. it's just a reality.

MY thing is, if we're conscious of what we're consuming, and if we take just a LITTLE time to maybe just buy free range meat once in a while, or cook more vegetarian meals - i'm not saying GO VEGETARIAN (not that there's anything wrong with that), but mix it up a bit - but do things that show that, yes, your life needs to come first, but you're CONSCIOUS of the value of all life - then maybe that would send messages that would lead to the improved treatment of livestock or it would lead to more vegetarian options in grocery stores and restaurants (which is already happening), and change could happen slowly and steadily as a form of EVOLUTION, rather than this guilt and shock based BS that PETA is trying to feed us.

i believe there's a better way to co-exist with other living things, but you know what? i think we're alrady on that path. what PETA is doing is making people more defensive about their own habits, instead of showing people how they can make better choices with a minimum of sacrifice. i don't preach or guilt my friends who eat meat, and you know what? when i cook one of my vegetarian meals for them, they're always surprised at how much they like it. it's simply because i like good food. giving up meat doesn't make me any less epicurean. it just makes me more creative. THAT'S the kind of stuff PETA needs to be getting out there. not embarrassing celebrities. it's getting so tired. mad
