It's a really cool record. Definitely for fans of late 70's/early 80's post-punk. Singles are "Busy Doing Nothing" and "Make Out Fall Out Make Up". And yeah, I think 2006 was pretty good  It seems most of my favorite artists were missing this year - Annie Lennox, The Cure, Radiohead, Bowie, Tori Amos, etc - but there were plenty of other good things to keep me occupied!
I have no complaints at all about 2006. I could really be gluttonous and even extend my best of list to 40 albums. One more thing: Since you like Pink, listen to "U + Ur Hand" and the Veronicas' "4ever" and tell me they aren't the same song. I know most people on the org could care less about this band, but my album of the year is ...
For me, at the end of the end of the day, rock and roll rightfully belongs to young kids with guitars in a garage playing songs about what they know and nothing else this year embodied this ethic more than this band. I haven't been around these parts in a while. Anyway, here are my favorites of the year, countdown-style:
10. The Beatles - Love At the very least, it's interesting. For the purpose of mixes, it's nice to have a "Hey Jude" that isn't 7 minutes long. 
9. Guster - Ganging Up on the Sun It's a little subdued in spots, but it's almost as good as their last two albums. 
8. Prince - 3121 It's a solid album with some great songs. 
7. India.Arie - Testimony: Vol. 1, Life & Relationship Although not as strong as Voyage to India, it's still a good record. 
6. Tim Finn - Imaginary Kingdom It kind of slows down towards the end, but this is another great album by the elder Finn brother. It's a worthy followup to their excellent Everyone Is Here, my top pick in 2004. "Couldn't Be Done" is infectious. 
5. Gnarls Barkley - St. Elsewhere I'm not as in love with it as most people are, but there is some great stuff on this record. I still think the Danger Doom album is DM's shining moment. 
4. Justin Timberlake - FutureSex/LoveSounds While I can barely stand "SexyBack," the majority of the album is hot! "Summer Love," "What Goes Around...," and "Until the End of Time" are my favorites. 
3. Nelly Furtado - Loose Justin's album sold more, but this is definitely Timbaland's best effort of the year. There's not a bad track on this one. "Wait for You" is probably my favorite. 
2. Robin Thicke - The Evolution of Robin Thicke I'm glad Pharrell took his time with this one. I liked it immediately, but it really grew on me the more I heard it. It's a shame so many people still haven't heard it. With no disrespect to one of my all-time favorites, there are quite a few moments that remind me of Marvin Gaye. "Would That Make U Love Me" (one of the Marvinesque songs), "2 the Sky," and "Lost Without You" are my favorites. 
1a. Crowded House - Farewell to the World I disqualified this one for a couple of reasons: it's a live album and it hasn't even been released here in America. If I hadn't, it would've been #1. It's an excellent recording of Crowded House's final show in Sydney before 120,000+ outside the Opera House (the biggest concert of that year). The excellent CD and DVD were released to coincide with the concert's 10-year anniversary. 
1. Van Hunt - On the Jungle Floor Not only is this the album of the year IMO, but it's probably the best R&B album in many years. Diverse but cohesive, Van knocked it out of the park this time. "Being a Girl," "Hot Stage Lights," and the cover of "Mean Sleep" are a few of the many highlights (no pun intended), but the best song is "At the End of a Slow Dance." 1. Michael Jackson - Visionary This is a great collection and the music videos are like icing on the cake. Plus, the cool case and displays make it even more awesome. The music sounds better than ever. (And the remixes are bumpin!) 2. 
Justin Timberlake - FutureSex/LoveSounds While I didn't expect this album to be that good, it has kind of grown on me. I really love "Sexy Ladies" and "Lovestoned." (Both sound like Michael Jackson tracks - which is when Justin sounds his best.) "My Love" and "SexyBack" are alright but totally not the best tracks IMO. 3. 
Prince - 3121 While this album wasn't as great as I was hoping, I love "Fury," "Beautiful, Loved and Blessed" and "Black Sweat." I think those 3 tracks are some of Prince's best stuff in years. And the cover needs some kind of an award, I love the look of the 3121 cover. 4. 
Janet Jackson - 20 Y.O. The song "So Excited" is my favorite Janet Jackson....EVER! I love it. This album isn't quite as good as "All 4 You." (IMO) However, it isn't a bad album either. Sure, it has some filler. But "So Excited" is what made this album get as much play as it did this past year for me. Plus, "Call On Me" wasn't that bad. | |

I agree with a lot of your, collective, choices.
Another mention of my favs Bob Dylan--yes Beck--yes Prince--yes An honorable mention to Janet because I'm starting to appreciate 20 Y. O. more and more. I really like the direction of it more than I did when I first heard it. The only complaint I have about Janet is that she should really work with a vocal coach to develop more resonance and power in her voice. I don't want her vocal style to change because she reminds me a little bit of Earth Kitt... really a throwback to a time of non-belt singers. But I would like Janet's voice to sound more like Eartha's--more mature while maintaining that soft quality. Janet definitely has more range and musicality for which I've haven't given her much credit in the past. She just needs to work on her overall vocal quality--step it up a notch. Others An Other Cup Yusuf (Cat Stevens) I'm a huge Cat Stevens fan, so I just loved this cd. My husband gave me the deluxe edition for Christmas. The cd is amazing--my favorite song is "Heaven/Where True Love Goes," and then his cover of "Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood" is very creative. Great cd. Another gift I received is Sting's Song from the Labyrinth. This cd is absolutely incredible because Sting show his versatility as a musician and vocalist. It's chamber music?? (I think), and it just blew me away. Thanks for those who recommended it on this site. Songs... might not hugely popular, but it is really a interesting concept. | |
