I don't have 10 but I also listen to Floetry, Alicia Keys, Jill Scott, EWF,
I like music that is heavy with lyrics and melodies. Not real keen on the "shake your booty" music. And you must be able to sing... no Britney, Beyonce, or Janet. (oops did I say that??) "Remember, one man's filler is another man's killer" -- Haystack | |

Ten? Good grief. I can give you five (and I'm still going to have to really think):
Karen Clark-Sheard: I like her voice and her message. The woman is annointed! Brandy: I like her smokey vocals and her vocal arrangements. Stephanie Mills: Again, I like her voice. Are you seeing a pattern develop? Michael Jackson/Jackson 5: I like his voice (and Jermaine's). And top-notch production, mixing...shoot, everything. Janet Jackson: Finally, someone I like for production. | |

You already know most of what else I listen to, but what the hey...I like the "and why" part, so I'll indulge:
1. Bowie - Because I think his songwriting and performance style creates the best moods of anyone in pop/rock music. I think he's an alchemist who can turn flash into substance, and the chaotic randomness of his lyrics stick with me like no other. 2. Björk - Because she's an insane genius, but there's a method to her insanity. And because she insists on originality on her terms, yet she collaborates often and appears to realize she is a part of the world (listening, Prince?). Musically, everything she does challenges me. As a performer, she is committed to remaining visually engaging. As far as I'm concerned, she's the whole meal plus dessert. 3. Talking Heads - Punk origins, funk sensibilities, avant-garde art-geek personalities. What's for me not to love? Not to mention Tina Weymouth is my favorite bass player ever...the woman goes into her own world when she plays. 4. Sonic Youth - I love how they turn chaos into beauty and noise into symphonies. Thurston Moore is one of my favorite guitarists, and Kim Gordon is one of my favorite people in general. Their "Goo" album is what all teenybopper bubblegum pop would sound like if I ruled the world. 5. Laurie Anderson - I will go to the grave bitterly envious of this woman's imagination. In the meantime, I'll just admire the living daylights out of her. She's witty, silly, glib, thoughtful, dark, insightful, sometimes eerily prescient, empathetic, cynical...and that's just her writing. She's also a fantastic recording artist, multi-instrumentalist and performer. Her singing isn't always the best, but given all her talents, she's granted a weakness or two. Her speaking voice, however, is sublime. 
6. Stereolab - Smart, melodic, hypnotic free-jazz disguised as electronic pop. Their song "Space Moth" is complete euphoria to me, especially the last two or three minutes. 7. Saint Etienne - One of the few groups I know of to transcend housey dancey early '90s brit-pop and expand into an experimental electronic group...though that's not really doing justice to the side of StEt that is warmly retro, with generous nods to Brian Wilson and Burt Bacharach. And let's not forget lead singer Sarah Cracknell, who has an adorable purr of a voice that could easily melt an iceberg with a single note. 8. Janis Joplin - Do I really need to explain why I love Janis? SIGH. She had a big, (traditionally) ugly voice and she wasn't afraid to let go and sing from the deepest part of her soul. I think her ability to interpret a song was remarkably honest, which I think turns a lot of people off to her. Her level of emotion might be a bit much for some. Of any famous person living or dead who I'd love to spend a day with, Janis has always been at the top of my list. 9. Kate Bush - I'm a half-baked Kate fan. I really only like her music from "Hounds of Love" on through "Aerial". But what I love, I LOVE. I adore Kate's ability to slow her imagination down and catch the details. I like her sense of beauty, which rarely comes off as hackneyed or cliched. She has a very dry, playful sense of humor and never takes herself too seriously. I think her voice sounds better and better as she ages. 10. Princess Superstar - She may not be nearly as brilliant as anyone else on this list, but what can I say...I love every album she's done, her lyrics are hilarious, she's a fantastic live performer, and she's a white chick rapper who plays guitar. I don't ask for much more than that, really. 
And there's my list for today. Ask me tomorrow, and it'll be different. Not much different, though. | |

It's not really regular anymore... thanx to his Greatness.
But I do listen 2 a couple of artists these days, although not very often. Jesse McCartney I've mentioned several times already. he's the 1st artist I seriously got into 2 the point that I wanted 2 see him in concert (and in person) a couple of times... I was never concerned with such things b4, but then again, he made music huge 4 me... like an anti-dote 4 depression and stuff (which i dealt w/frequently during my hs years... don't worry, it was never serios 2 the point i needed medical attention). He was kinda like my rock. Aly & AJ I recently picked up... just cuz I figured, I like some of their songs, I might as well get a 17-track disc of their hits. And actually there was some great stuff on there. They wrote their own music and even if some of it is bubble-gummy, it can be powerful... of course, their music ends up reminding me of Prince from time to time. Check out the lyrics for "Shine"... that says it all about Prince. I was into these people 4 a while, but they kinda dropped out of the picture when Prince came along. 3. The Click Five (actually, i didnt listen to them quite as much as I did last year when their CD first came out... but I quit after a while cuz I got a little bored) 4. Lindsay Lohan (you can throw the jokes u want, but I like her music a lot) 5. Ryan Cabrera (very little these days) 6. Ashlee Simpson (haven't listen 2 her in a LONG time) Plus One, a Christian boyband, also bought up some of my time, but little these days. had 2 run away... pride was 2 strong. I was hoping this wouldn't happen as it defeats the whole purpose of the question.
The point was to see what the hardcore posters on that specific section of the board (the majority of which do not post here) listen to. You can lock this down as we know what folks listen to here already. tA Tribal Disorder
