As Prince so laments you do not need permission to cover a song you just have to pay the artist money.

But then again Prince has remade plenty of songs in recent years and in some occasions (Machine Gun) did not give credit or pay money. This is one issue where prince is a bit of a hypocrite. It's okay for him to cover but not for other artists.

He gave the mastertape of the MachineGun cover to the
Hendrix family.

but he has also been stated as saying he has turned down many proposals to cover his songs as well..so i guess it just depends on his mood that day

But what I am saying is that if the artist wanted to they could legally remake any Prince song they wanted to with or without his permission. Some artists show respect and ask his permission but they are not required to.

It was a download from year 1 of the NPGMC. Prince called it "Habibi", but it was clearly derived from Machine Gun.

I thought Prince covered "Purple House" (Red House) for that project.

No, the MachineGun song was originally covered by Prince
back in 1999 and that's when he donated the mastertape to
the Hendrix family to do with as they saw fit and whenever
they chose to release it.

I think that "Habibi" was just a remake, based on the same
song. Knowing Prince he probably figured since he'd donated
that mastertape, there'd be no harm in covering his own
cover of a song. Something like that.

I don't own any of her albums but I've noticed that she does one cover every album but usually they are clasic rock songs like "The Beat Goes On", "Satisifaction" and "I Love Rock and Roll" (as done by Pat Benatar, apparently!) and this seems like not only an odd choice but it just won't work at all. Why not cover anything else (even a different Prince song)? This is not up your alley at all. Leave it alone, please! Hey, maybe she is covering that song "Lay Your Hands On Me". That might not sound so bad (Compared to her cover of "Nothing Compares 2 U")

Better yet, let her cover "Troy". Let's see her moan and
groan her way out of that one.

OKAAAYYY!!!

i've often wondered the same thing. remember when he went on the tangent about peeps covering music (about 2 years ago). there was a big ole article up in the old website talking about how it is offensive to re-record material, even if it is done as an homage. my question was always "well, what's your excuse for the emancipation album, p?"...(another) hmmm...

Great point!

I don't know if this is true or not, but I bet that if this ever got back to him, St. Paul would laugh his ass off lol

Anyway, if she really likes that song and wants to sing it, more power to her shrug

lol what do you expect? Not many people her age know who wrote that song. But she actually is quite a Prince fan though; there was some special on MTV about her everyday life that my niece was wtaching, and while she was exercising "dirty mind" was playing in the background, so...

And while I really do wish she'd stop making music altoghether, she can actually carry a tune
