What’s everyone’s rankings of the songs on discs 3-4? Here are mine so far. 10/10: 1. Moonbeam Levels 2. Something in the Water (Does Not Compute) (original) 3. Purple Music 4. Delirious (full length) 5. Rearrange 6. Possessed 7. Do Yourself a Favor 8. Turn It Up 9. No Call U 9.5/10: 10. Bold Generation 11. How Come U Don’t Call Me Anymore (Take 2) 12. Yah, You Know 9/10: 13. Teacher, Teacher 14. Vagina 15. International Lover (Take 1) 8.5/10 16. Feel U Up 17. Irresistible Bitch 18. Lady Cab Driver / I Wanna Be Your Lover / Head / Little Red Corvette (tour demo) 19. Don’t Let Him Fool Ya 8/10: 20. Can’t Stop This Feeling I Got 21. You’re All I Want 7/10: 22. Colleen 23. Money Don’t Grow On Trees 6/10: 24. If It’ll Make U Happy

Here are my rankings.

CD3
Feel U Up = 7/10
Irresistible Bitch = 7/10
Money Don’t Grow On Trees = 8/10
Vagina = 9/10
Rearrange = 10/10
Bold Generation = 10/10
Colleen = 8/10
International Lover (Take 1) [Live In Studio] = 8/10
Turn It Up = 8/10
You’re All I Want = 7/10
Something In The Water (Does Not Compute) = 9/10
If It’ll Make U Happy = 9/10
How Come U Don’t Call Me Anymore? (Take 2) = 8/10

CD3 gets off to a slow start, but it quickly ramps up to awesome. 1-2 punch of Rearrange and Bold Generation continues to be on repeat. Colleen is cool, although a bit repetitive. As an overall set, 9/10.

CD4
Possessed (1982 Version) = 8/10
Delirious (Full Length) = 8/10
Purple Music = 9/10
Yah, You Know = 9/10
Moonbeam Levels (2019 Remaster) = 9/10
No Call U = 8/10
Can’t Stop This Feeling I Got = 7/10
Do Yourself A Favor = 10/10
Don’t Let Him Fool Ya = 7/10
Teacher, Teacher = 8/10
Lady Cab Driver / I Wanna Be Your Lover / Little Red Corvette (Tour Demo) = 10/10

CD4 suffers a bit for me because I've heard almost all of it on boots/shares. Trying to be objective, I would say that the highs aren't as high as CD3, but the lows aren't as low. Overall set, 8/10.

****
And if I never heard any boots, these would probably change:
Turn It Up = 9/10
Something In the Water (Does Not Compute) = 10/10

Purple Music = 10/10
Teacher, Teacher = 9/10

Not a reggae fan. It’s a miracle I rate it that high! It’s a cute song but not essential, IMO. Nice and poppy, and I like the guitar.

This set has been on heavy rotation since I downloaded it a couple weeks ago. I am absolutely loving the whole thing. This is the album that made me a fan back in 83 and I still have my original vinyl. But this set has made me fall in love with it all over again. cool

Merry Christmas to me! xmas

Trump, fascism, and everything else is irrelevant to this thread. The issue was, speaking of discretion, about someone being a dickhead about transgender people and ranting about transgendered children of all things. Somehow that has morphed into y'all going tit for tat on a non-issue. Can this thread be brought back into some semblance of relevance?

.

Transgenders are a manifestation of Darwinism.

Be happy for them and that.

.

These are the facts.

Now about the music:
Are we looking forward to the next release(s) or are we spinning 1999 Deluxe still?

The outtakes (excluding Moonbeam Levels) don't sound terribly amazing with a good pair of headphones. I'm sure they did the best they could do, but the quality is a bit shakier than I had hoped.

A certain kind of mellow.

Why would you expect better!?
They’re unfinished demos that were recorded over 35 years ago and not maintained since.

They sound like demos because they are.

Can you pelase be more specific than 'the quality'?

What is the problem? Hiss? Tonal balance? Stereo separation c.q. the stereo spread of the mix, distortion, clipping, etc, etc, etc...

Huh? More specifics would be nice. While a few could've been given a bit more love in a different direction than what they got, these outtakes sound incredible to me.

Prince has mentioned a few times in interviews that a 1999 part 2 exists in the vault. We now probably have most of the tracks that he was referring to.

Do you guys think what he was referring to is an actual sequenced album, or just miscellaneous songs that he felt 'could' make up a 1999 part 2?

How would you guys track it? Here is my list of what would be a cohesive sounding sequence. I realize some great tunes are missing, but for me, these 10 tracks would all compliment one another nicely as a set.

Extraloveable

Rearrange

Turn It Up

Possessed

No Call U

Lust U Always

Don't Let Him Fool Ya

You're All I Want

Purple Music

Moonbeam Levels

I don’t think we know of any sequence or whether one ever was put together. It’s a fascinating subject, for sure!

Among your list, I think 5 do sound like they could have been on a follow-up:

Extraloveable
Possessed
Lust U Always
Purple Music
Moonbeam Levels

The others, IMO, sound too much like his previous stuff, IMO, to have been on a follow-up, though of course he could have reworked them (like he did “Possessed”, though I prefer this 82 version). Don’t get me wrong - they are all awesome songs, but I don’t think they would have progressed his sound per se from 1999, and during this era, Prince’s sound was rapidly evolving.

If there is some sequences follow-up, the estate would be very smart to release it. I can imagine both hardcore fans and the public at large would be very interested in “lost” albums, especially from his golden era! Maybe the Dreams configuration is what he meant in that interview?

I probably would envision an album coming before 1999 rather than being a follow up.

Purple Music
Lust U Always
Possessed
Make-Up
Girl
Turn It Up
Yah, U Know
No Call U
If It'll Make U Happy
You're My Love
Baby, You're A Trip
Rearrange

I really really love the 1-2 punch of IIMUH and You're My Love. They feel good to my ear in the same way Acknowledge Me and Ripop do - genres that are kind of experimental for him done in his signature style.

Prince could have released a ‘1999 part 2’ in 1983 if he wanted to. He was obviously preparing for the album and movie Purple Rain that year, but he could have just released it without a tour or anything promotional

Album Title: “Purple Music”
1983

Tracklisting:
1) Possessed
2) Extraloveable
3) Turn It Up
4) Moonbeam Levels
5) Yay, U Know
6) Lust U Always
7) No Call U
8) Baby, You’re a Trip
9) Purple Music

Not perfect, but something like that ^

Spotify let's me choose exact same songs but the different year released revised remastered re whatever

It appears you high-tech streaming setup warps the audio quite a bit as nobody had complaints like yours.

Play the CD and use wired headphones to be sure.

I do enjoy the live Detroit D.M.S.R., heard that a few times today, I didn't see that offered the other day.

The remastered from the original 'recorded' track differences were not due to audio quality, rather tempo changes, etc.

The live show releases are great fun, appreciate these, thanks.

I take it all back Spotify

Thank You for the

1982 Masonic Hall, Detroit MI live concert release. What a show.

Incredible architecture and feel to these old Masonic buildings (I've been in Mpls., but not this Detroit building)

current info about Detroit Masonic Building

'Construction of the structure, which includes more than 1,000 rooms, started in 1920 as a meeting place for Detroit's Freemason organizations, but they bit off more than they could chew. The Great Depression halted the project, and to this day its top three floors remain unfinished, which include a swimming pool and yet another theater. As of 2014, Detroit's Masonic Temple had just 3,3000 members, less than half of which paid membership dues — hence the need for public entertainment deals like the one with AEG Presents.

The investment from AEG Presents is in addition to the $3.7 million renovation project announced at the venue last year, its first major renovation since 1990. In 2013, Jack White, whose mother worked as an usher at the Masonic and who has performed there numerous times with his band the White Stripes, anonymously donated $142,000 to pay off the building's back taxes.'

.

On the soul and R&B front, a fair slice of my attention was given over to various Prince-related offerings this year, from the intriguing Originals album to the exhaustive 1999 boxset. The Purple One's unfinished autobiography The Beautiful Ones was a glimpse into what could have been and further underlined just what an extraordinary, much-missed talent Minneapolis' most famous son was.

The answer to how prodigious a single one-man-band can get is answered in the kind of vault-emptying exercise Prince fans have dreamed of before and since his passing. The two discs’ worth of songs that didn’t make the cut for “1999” won’t convince you he was making the wrong choices at the time, but most of the discarded cuts come awfully close to being top-flight, and in a few cases — like “How Come U Don’t Call Me Anymore,” duh — achieve it. And it’s fun to hear him messing with ideas that emerged more fully formed later, like a rough draft of “New Power Generation.” A live album and concert DVD further establish that, however much we loved the Revolution joining in for “Purple Rain,” the “1999” era was a peak for Princedom in its purest form.

SDE’s Best Reissues of 2019

.
2020 is but hours away, so before we hit a new decade, SDE takes a look at some of the best reissues and box sets from this year. There are seven categories, each with one winner and ‘special mentions’ for other worthy releases.

.
BEST SINGLE ALBUM BOX SET: Prince ‘1999’ (Warner Records)

.
A near-perfect reissue of Prince‘s 1982 album, the 5CD+DVD set and 10LP+DVD box offered an enormous amount of bonus material, including two CDs (or four LPs) of vault tracks. The quality of this material is unreal, from early versions of eventually released songs (‘Irresistible Bitch’, ‘Feel U Up) to tracks that Prince kept fiddling with that were ultimately never issued (‘Possessed’). It’s the sheer number of unheard songs that boggles the mind and they are all good; from the funky ‘Bold Generation’, the breezy ‘Money Don’t Grow On Trees’ to the ultra-poppy ‘Rearrange’. Add to this the remastered double album, every edit, remix or B-side issued at the time and two live performances (one on CD and one on DVD) and you’ve got the making of something quite special. The wonderful packaging is also worth a mention. Naysayers can point to the lack of 5.1 mix and promo videos but for around £55 for the CD box that’s fairly easy to forgive.

I got my copy today of the Superdeluxe 5CD/DVD woot! I liked how they posted his written lyrics on page 15-24 of the booklet, especially Purple Music where Prince made a point of using black texter to highlight "better try our best to get along". Sure I would have loved it had they included concert footage of The Time and Vanity 6 to the DVD, but I can overlook that because its packaged beautfully and the vault songs are amazing. 1999 is my all-time fav Prince album and I give this a 4 out 5 prince music

True: Since getting Spotify 1982 1999 Detroit concert, I have singled out my fav 5-7 tunes and have listened repeatedly over over and over. No, I had never heard it before last week. It knocks me out! Also true: some of us who love Prince do not have the financial capability to purchase beyond a Spotify, so I do indeed thank you. Lastly, the Super Deluxe Edition Prince 1999 Lady Cabdriver/I Want To Be Your Lover I have listened to 25x and will again again again LOVE IT.
