Soooooo early on! I just watched it before seeing your post.

Fink in prison gear (which Rick James' band had and Fink changed it to scrubs)

Gayle's still there.

Of course Andre and Dez. Amazing that in just a few short years, only Fink & Z would be the original two left.

i got excited to see this as Midnight Special always had LIVE performances(thanks for the link!), but then it was playback sad

This has been out for years.
Dez Dickerson, in his book, writes how there was no studio audience; the heads you see occasionally are show crewmembers. Definitely miming to the recording.

Most of those variety shows had lip sync performances. American Bandstand, Solid Gold, Soul Train, etc. It just wasn't always viable to have a live setup.

SPYZFAN1	I remember staying up late to watch this. If I'm correct, I think this was taped in December 1979. To see some video of P from the 70's is cool. Picked this up on a VHS bootleg comp. in 1992.

Aired January 12, 1980 on NBC.

The show aired Jan 11, but the performance itself was after midnight, ergo the date difference.

Those were days I certainly wasn't up watching TV at midnight.
