Lauryn Hill's Mistreatment of Artists

"You haven't done enough to be the way you are"

Start at the 26:50 mark for the Lauryn Hill stuff.

Jazz pianist Robert Glasper spills major tea on the rumors of Lauryn Hill being difficult to work with. He goes in on a time years ago when he was asked to play with Lauryn for a 20-minute gig. She was getting paid $500K for 20 minutes. She decided to cut everyone's pay by half. Except Robert didn't accept this and left until he got his full amount. (Which he did)

But there's just so much more to it. It's about the last 10 minutes or so of the linked video.

I don't know him, but he has an impressive resume of people he's worked with, plus 11 Grammy noms, 5 wins, #1 jazz albums, etc.

There is a slight Prince mention, where Hill's team wanted a Prince-type approach on The Miseducation... where it appears she wrote and produced everything; which we know now (because of a lawsuit brought by those who did write and produce that album) was bullshit.

Yep, historically documented.

The real reason she'll never put out a follow-up that reaches 1/1,000th of the level of success her debut LP did. Anyone that could contribute to it wants nothing to do with her.

I would tend to believe every bit of that. I don't know if she was sort of striking the iron when it was hot, or she was really that talented, and just sorta squandered it. It seems there is more of a hype around her at this point, than any relevant and recent resume items.

Yeah I feel having been in and around music business people alot back then, when "The Score" was huge and then of course that led to solo where I kind of felt she did not need the others at all and could strike out on her own, it always seemed like there were major issues in the band, and some record people I knew then always would tell me little things here and there about who were cool and who were not cool people to be around. The funny thing is now, this week APPLE released its 100 greatest albums and Lauryn is number one (LOL) don't get me wrong that album is a classic and I would rank it in the top 100 but number one? no sorry, yes it was huge and impactful, but she also created alot of things around that album that at times took the focus off the album and put it on other things, one of the infamous things was the "White people buy my album" incident, now this moment kind of hurt her in some degree, some say it derailed her career, I wouldn't go that far, but it was a combination of her own things going on and this surely was not a help. Her later years seeing incidents of not paying people what they worked for, leaving and cancelling shows, to me makes her almost this enigma of a great album and then nothing. Some compare her "one album" with Alanis and Hootie and The Blowfish, but thats something entirely different, both of those had more recording and side things etc...and still work extensively today, they just are not mega sellers then again no one is in this generation for the most part on that level, of having diamond "Selling" albums, and I highlight selling because now there seems to be this FALSE equating of selling actual product to the convenience of streaming.

The MTV Unplugged performance made me a real fan.

Then, she was just gone...

Despite everything,I still really love her Miseducation album....and that wonderful song she did for the Love Jones movie ("Sweetest Thing") music she's a very talented woman.
