last time around, he was reinventing his sound as the new R. Kelly.
perhaps he's planning to launch a new phase as the new Babyface. then after that, the new Al B Sure... maybe then he'll get back to his roots, full-circle, and be the new Prince (again)

MAXWELL...come back, we miss you! I miss him too...such a beautiful voice and so spiritual! I worry about him. After Embryo.. he left the whole inventing his own style scene.. he gave in like the rest.. that cheesy r&b jibberish that u hear everyday on your local station.. way to go

His "sound" was largely due to Stuart Matthewman and his backing band Sweetback, and when they each went off to do their own thing, Maxwell started drifting closer and closer to run of the mill sounds. After Embrya.. he left the whole inventing his own style scene.. he gave in like the rest.. that cheesy r&b jibberish that u hear everyday on your local station.. way to go Exactly. "Urban" was such a breath of fresh air when it was first released. And to this day, I can still listen to that album and enjoy it eventho I must have heard it 1000 times. After that "Embrya" was a very pleasant surprise, I thought it had a sound entirely it's own. As if it was recorded in an underwater tank. Plush and warm and moist. The vocals and arrangements were so deeply organic and smooth. But indeed, "Now" altho still a nice album was a record I've grown tired with after only a few listens. There are about 5 nice tunes on there but the rest just doesn't go anywhere. I thought that was a real shame, especially since reporst on the album before release stated it sounded too much like a Prince album and that he had to go back to the studio and make some changes. Not sure what they changed, if they changed anything at all but the result is a middle of the road r&b album with a few shining moments. I find myself going back to Urban & Embrya now and completely ignoring Now. Still, when he releases a new album I'll pick it up soon as I can cuz I still want to hear what he's up to now. and true love lives on lollipops and crisps

I saw him in a recent magazine, standing next to a pretty blonde actress (no,it wasn't Britney Spears...lol),can't remember her name but she's famous.Supposedly she and Maxwell are involved, according to the article. He may not have a new album, but it looks like he found a new love.

Because Maxwell was so guarded about his private life, the inevitable gay rumors surfaced in recent years.

i thought stuart *was* involved with Now...and I didnt know the other guys from Sweetback (which is actually Sade's backing band: Stuart Mathewman, Andrew Hall and Paul Dunham) took part in any of Maxwells work.. are you sure? damn if i werent moving with all my discs packed up I would take a gander...gander. i'm always surprised by the popular opinion that 'now' is not a great record. i love all four of his releases (i'm including the unplugged bit here). they all seem to have a purpose and sound of their own. and i really don't think 'now' sounds like some homogenized version of maxwell. its a great cd with a life of its own.

Well daym I'm too lazy to find my cds to check. I knew that the entire Sweetback band were backing him in his live shows for the first few releases, but not his last tour. And for some reason I recall their involvement diminished greatly or totally by the time of NOW. But I dunno for sure "That...magic, the start of something revolutionary-the Minneapolis Sound, we should cherish it and not punish prince for not being able to replicate it."-Dreamshaman32
