What does Starfish & Coffee mean???

Does anybody actually know what Prince is talking about when he says
"Starfish & Coffee- maple syrup and jam-butterscotch clouds- a tangerine and
a side order of ham if you set your mind free maybe you'll understand"

What does all that nonsense mean??

The whole songs about a "special" child , as confirmed by Prince in a
question and answer session with friends/fans/us online at the old love4oneanother site a few years back ,so I'd say the chorus is just a kaleidoscope of imagery meant to illustrate what goes on in the special
childs head , nothing too metaphorical I'd say cool

To give you my interpretation of Starfish, I shall quote from one of classic comedies of modern cinema, Coming to America.

"Son, I'm only going to tell you this one time. Stay off the drugs"
All good things they say never last...

This has got to be one of the most popular questions about Prince songs. Prince should come out with his guitar at the Grammys and, (since he is being more active and talkative these days) he should play Starfish and Coffee and explain what it is about before he smiles and launches into it.
"Did u love somebody
But got no love in return?
Did u understand the real meaning of love?
That it just is and never yearns"
...Prince

Ask Kermit and the rest of the Muppets. They'll understand.
Ooh, little darlin' if you're
free 4 a couple of hours (Free 4 a couple of hours)
If U ain't busy 4 the next 7 years (Next 7 years)
Say, let's pretend we're married and go all night

Starfish -a fish that is shaped like a star, a shape that can be found in the sky, on land, and in the sea...

Coffee -hot, comes from life (bean from tree), beautiful color, smell, and taste wakes you up...

Maple syrup -sticky and sweet, comes from life (tree)...

Jam -sweet, preserves, comes from life (fruit from tree), sounds that appeal to ears...

Butterscotch clouds - Soft and sweet (like cotton candy) clouds (made of water -sign of life), a beautiful sunset color...

Tangerine -texture, comes from life (fruit), orange (hunger color), sweet, seeds...

Side order of ham -comes from life (pig), something that lives so nasty tastes so good...

It has to do with appealing to all five of your senses...sight, smell, sound, taste, and touch... life... living life...and how life comes from life and life nurishes life within itself...For example -no matter what kind of life you are living, you are not living it alone, you are not the first and not the last... life goes on...

That's what I got out of the song...which is one of my favorites...
Um... let me warm up my vocals

I like how this song was sampled on "No Delayin'" by Nice & Smooth.

What is "Starfish & Coffee `95" from? I got this mp3 a while back when I downloaded the Muppets spot too.

btw "if you set your mind free, maybe you'll understand" that this song is about Autism. nod

TheRealFiness - what do you mean that Angelic's interpretation is "wrong"? How is it that Angelic's theses cannot be applied to what the song is about. The song is about an autistic child, which makes angelic's ideas entirely relevant as to why he used that particular imagery.

Or perhaps you could enlighten us further as to why Prince uses the imagery he does??!!!

I'm quite interested in agelic's theory. For me, the imagery was always a nod to the Beatles use of psychedelic imagery in Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds, so its good to have a fresh angle.

Its about a girl who is how do you say FOrest Gump Like. and while she is slow she has these things in her lunchbox (ie her personallity). But no one tries to figure out if she really has what she says in her lunchbox (ie no one tries to take the time to understand her because she is different) but when the boy and llucy look in her lunch box (get to know her) they see that she has everything she said she did. THe Muppetshow performance hit it right on the head.

My theory is kind of like some of the others, but maybe a little more simple. I think it's just about a girl who has an active imagination. I guess it could be a gifted child. At any rate, you can't understand starfish and coffee unless you set your mind free.....just be imaginiative. the song puts an importance on imagination, creativity and happiness. I think the movie Finding Neverland conveys the same ideas. In studying history I have found that the 18th and 19th century Romantic movements contain these ideas. The Romantics emphasized creativity over more practical thought. Pretty cool people huh?
