1. Musicology
2. Lolita
3. A tie
4. Black Sweat
5. Call My Name
6. Love
7. WDUWM2D
8. Fury
9. The Word
10.BLB
11. Dear Mr. Man
12. Reflection

Overall:
Musicology: 5 1/2
3121: 6 1/2

As an album I think I like 3121 the best, it has no weak numbers - and I love playing it the way Prince intended the album to be played. I love Musicology, but it has like 6 great songs, and then 2-3 shitty ones.

Musicology vs 3121- I'm sticking with "Musicology"
Illusion, Coma, pimp, circumstance vs Lolita - Both great songs gotta go with "Lolita"
A million days vs Te Amo Corazon - "A million days" wins although I like both
Life "O" Party vs Black Sweat- Tie(Two of his best of the "new stuff")
Call my name vs Incense and Candles -Tie (Two of his best of the "new stuff")
Cinnamon girl vs Love - Liked "Cinnamon girl" better
What do you want me to do vs Satisfied - Neither one was great but "Satisfied" was better.
The Marrying Kind vs Fury - "The Marrying kind" is my pick
If eye was the man in ur life vs The World - "If eye was the man in ur life" is my pick
On the Couch vs Beutiful, Loved, Blessed - I liked the Tamar, Prince duet."BLB" wins
Dear Mr Man vs The Dance- Hell yeah!....Dear Mr Man has a strong message and its a great song. SO it gets my vote
Reflection vs Get on the Boat- Tie a great ending to both albums.

Note: I think as far as vocals go "Musicology" is the far better album. But I like that "3121" is all about the DANCING! Its like going to a party. Both albums were GREAT! I'm glad prince is back.

1. Musicology vs. 3121- I like both, but 3121 is richer and more layered.
2. Illusion, Coma, Pimp & Circumstance vs. Lolita- The most accessible pop song on either album
3. A Million Days vs. Te Amo Corazón Eh, both fail to move me
4. Life o' the Party vs. Black Sweat Don't mind either, life is catchier, sweat is bolder
5. Call My Name vs. Incense and Candles mmm, both are okay.
6. Cinnamon Girl vs. Love- I dig Cinnamon Girl, but Love flies.
7. What Do U Want Me 2 Do vs. Satisfied- both are just "eh." What Do You Want Me 2 Do grates on me more.
8. The Marrying Kind vs. Fury Fury by several touchdowns.
9. If Eye Was the Man in Ur Life vs. The Word- The Word by several touchdowns and game called in the first quarter cuz it's just too lopsided.
10. On the Couch vs. Beautiful, Loved and Blessed- Prince's first "protege" song beats Prince's phony "I'm so submissive in this marriage" song.
11. Dear Mr. Man vs. The Dance- I could live without hearing either ever again.
12. Reflection vs. Get on the Boat[/b][/quote] Boat by a hair. Just a little bit less bland than Reflection.

1. Musicology - 3121: No contest here at all for me. 3121 is the shit. Musicology isn't, simple as that.

2. ICPC - Lolita: This is soooo close to being a tie... if Lolita had more rhythm guitar in there, it'd be easier. The dry, raw rhythm guitar madness of ICPC is dam great. But I think Lolita might be the better song, so....

3. A Million Days - Te Amo Corazon: Can't decide.

4. Life o'the Party - Black Sweat: Had the synth in BS been mixed a little more ear-friendly and some additional rhythm guitar in there, it'd be a perfect 10. LOTP doesn't have much speaking for it. I do like his vocals there, though.

5. Call My Name - Incense & Candles: I love the warm sound of CMN. Great bass in there, just vey pleasant overall. I qutie like IC too but not that much.

6. Cinnamon Girl - Love: I really dig the lyrics of CG, but musically it's a little bland. Thumbs up for addressing this subject, but still, Love is the second "this is the shit" track on 3121. The chorus is to die for. I NEED to hear this in a club.

7. WDUWM2D - Satisfied: Hmmm, propably a tie. The linn in the WDUWM2D is nice, but it could have an edgier sound and I'm not too sure about the lyrics. Satisfied is good too, it's just not my favorite genre for Prince.

8. The Marrying Kind - Fury: Can't stand those two rockers from Musicology. The album version of Fury might have its flaws, but it's a much better song, more energy, and we know what we're in for live!

9. IIWTMIUL - The Word: The Word is a highly original, great song, IMO. This is the shit again. No contest.

10. On the Couch - BLB: Don't know...I love the organ and vocal arrangements of OTC and those tasteful guitar embellishments are nice, but the funk jam at the end of BLB is great. Another tie.

11. Dear Mr Man - The Dance: Yet another tie but on a much higher level. Both these songs are fantastic, IMO. The Dance might get the edge.

12. Reflection - Get on the Boat: These are so completely different, hard to compare. Lyrically Reflection all the way, but I dig GOTB, too. Love that "we were meant to live together underneath the sun" bridge, nice piano playing by Prince. Reflection might get the edge because there really aren't a lot Prince songs with that atmosphere and such seemingly private lyrics. As if we're being allowed into a moment of doubt or melancholy for Prince.

So, I'm undecided on a couple of songs, but there are just some on 3121 that are so far above anything on Musicology. Feels much better overall.

cool
Musicology vs.3121 (It's a different sound. I like the beat)
ICPC vs.Lolita (More radio friendly has a better dance groove)
Million Days vs. Te Amo Corazon (Tie)
Life O' The Party vs. Black Sweat (Much more funkier hands down)
Call My Name vs. Incense & Candles (Call My Name is actually more romantic...but not as naughty that's why i like I&C better)
Cinnamon Girl vs. Love (It has a more uptempo beat. It's something you would blast from your speakers)
WDUWM2D vs. Satisfied (Too short definitely should have been longer. This has a nice get you in the mood feeling.)
The Marrying Kind vs. Fury (Fury is a cool funky jam, but for some reason The Marrying Kind still sticks in my mind)
IIWTMIUL vs. The Word (The Word is too preachy. It might grow on me after a few times of playing though.)
On The Couch vs. BL&B (I am a romantic. I love a nice slow jam.)
Dear Mr. Man vs. The Dance (Prince being political in his music is always more interesting to listen to & this sums up his opinion well.)
Reflections vs.Get On The Boat (Reflections is also another nice one, but Get On The Boat stands out more. It's hard not to nod to this one.)
Overall 3121 is the better album. music

1. Musicology vs. 3121: I'm sorry modern NPG apologists, but even though Musicology isn't a bad song, if I want to hear James Brown, I'll throw on some James Brown.

2. Illusion, Coma, Pimp & Circumstance vs. Lolita: Illusion is so gimicky it's almost insulting. Lolita, while unabashedly quirky, is still fresh and not so obvious an attempt to be clever.

3. A Million Days vs. Te Amo Corazón: These are both worthy only of play at TJ Maxx, but the sexiness of a Clare Fisher arrangement, even if too brief, trumps the anonymous-mid-80s-one-hit-wonder sound anyday.

4. Life o' the Party vs. Black Sweat: Such a bloodbath as to make this not even worth comment. Suffice it to say that if LOTP were a prisoner, Black Sweat would trade him for a pack of cigarettes.

5. Call My Name vs. Incense and Candles: Maybe the toughest contest here. Though both mediocre, both have merit insofar as songs about committed love and affection need to be heard these days. Against my funkier inclinations, I'm gonna go with Call My Name -- even despite it's horrid mushiness -- on the grounds that submission to comprehensive adoration trumps sexual titilation... and people need to hear that.

6. Cinnamon Girl vs. Love: Cinnamon Girl's got the same vacancy that I hate so much in A Million Days, BUT it carries an important message and it certainly beats out the Michael Jacksonesque "stop pressuring me" whining and annoying Knight Rider-sounding synth line of Love.

7. What Do U Want Me 2 Do vs. Satisfied: One word: Linn. cool

8. The Marrying Kind vs. Fury: Both throwaways. But I'll pick Fury as the narrative is slightly more interesting, and the guitar solo is listenable, if not particularly empassioned.

9. If Eye Was the Man in Ur Life vs. The Word: Not a huge fan of either of these. But I'll pick the message and guitar riff of The Word over the bad Mint Condition sound of If I Was...

10. On the Couch vs. Beautiful, Loved and Blessed: On the Couch attempts to be too cute again, where Beautiful is just pure youthful, wisdom-in-innocence fun. I will admit, though, that Prince comes off considerably less lovable than Tamar. This should have been a solo for her.

11. Dear Mr. Man vs. The Dance: The atmosphere, the chord progressions and the building emotion (albeit too restrained, IMO) of The Dance totally slaughters the run-of-the-mill social commentary of Dear Mr.Man

12. Reflection vs. Get on the Boat: I like the purity and introspection of Reflection. And Prince doing Latin-inspired music always seems lame to me -- even Sheila's genius couldn't save this one.

Musicology: 4
3121: 8

1. Musicology vs. 3121 - Musicology for sure, the dull bassline on 3121 just drowns and doesnt move where it should..though his vocal production on this track is nice, the "Camille" voice is a treat for sure, but Musicology was a nice jam in the vibe of "Bad Mf" (jb inspired prince tunes)

2. Illusion, Coma, Pimp & Circumstance vs. Lolita
the second i heard this joint i thought of Soft and Wet 2006! dope synth lines, wish he went higher on the vocals a la "if i was your gf" (camille)..dope track.

3. A Million Days vs. Te Amo Corazón
this joint is one of my fav prince joints in the last ten years! the guitar solo is rediculous. te amo is a nice song, but a million wins by far.

4. Life o' the Party vs. Black Sweat
Great prince performance. wish there was a elec guit solo on here to set it off, but hey, I cant have it all can I. The drum programing on here really set this joint off..

5. Call My Name vs. Incense and Candles
Incense has a more urban, contemporary feel that feels forced, CMN is a classic prince soulful joint. a natural, soft, beautiful song. I&C is cool, but CMN just gets me.

6. Cinnamon Girl vs. Love
this was tough. both songs are great. TIE. CG's music is reminiscent of Sign Of The Times, and the lyrics are very deep. LOVE is just a great uptempo jam, kinda prince's bread n butter.

7. What Do U Want Me 2 Do vs. Satisfied.
Tough one again, but What do u want me to do wins because it reminds me of some late 80's prince production (SOTT). Satisfied is nice, but it's conterpart "On The Couch" on Musicology wins out.

8. The Marrying Kind vs. Fury
This beat simply rocks and the synth sounds like some "Controversy" or "Dirty Mind". The rock vibe is on some late 60's Hendrix..good lawd! TMK is a great jam too, but Fury is one of 3121's best and my fav's!!

9. If Eye Was the Man in Ur Life vs. The Word
No Question. this joint is a musical masterpiece. The Word is a nice song, kinda over produced and early 90's sounding for me, but a good message is attached.

10. On the Couch vs. Beautiful, Loved and Blessed
Not too partial to either, but the funky break down at the 4:30 point that takes the song out wins it for me..long live the funk!

11. Dear Mr. Man vs. The Dance
This may BE the song on Musicology I play the Loudest! One of the dopest joints on the record. Great groove, interesting social commentary, good subject matter. The Dance is a great listen as well, pretty production with gorgeous arragements, but the soul'd out funk of DMM gets it.

12. Reflection vs. Get on the Boat
This song just feels good. It's a great track to relax to, nice lyrics as well. Get On The Boat is basically Musicology 2..like many have said, If I want to hear James Brown, I'll grab a James Brown record. Great musicianship, but I've heard this before, right?
[Edited 4/2/06 16:41pm]

So it looks like a tie...
Musicology - 6
3121 - 6

both are great albums, so I'm just gonna play em and enjoy!

vs.

Musicology and 3121 are clearly comparable to Diamonds and Pearls and prince of the 90s: 2 commercial albums that are viewed as a "return to form" of Prince and are attempts to rekindle Prince's love affair with the mainstream. Which is the superior record?

Let's break it down track by track. For each comparison, list your favorite of the two songs and a reason why. Then tally the votes.

1. Musicology vs. 3121
2. Illusion, Coma, Pimp & Circumstance vs. Lolita
3. A Million Days vs. Te Amo Corazón
4. Life o' the Party vs. Black Sweat
5. Call My Name vs. Incense and Candles
6. Cinnamon Girl vs. Love
7. What Do U Want Me 2 Do vs. Satisfied
8. The Marrying Kind vs. Fury
9. If Eye Was the Man in Ur Life vs. The Word
10. On the Couch vs. Beautiful, Loved and Blessed
11. Dear Mr. Man vs. The Dance
12. Reflection vs. Get on the Boat

I would have put On the couch vs. Satisfied. Those two songs are just so much alike. I love both of them though.

3.A Million Days vs Te Amo Corazon: A Million Days, although I like Te amo..

4.Life 'O' The Party vs Black Sweat: Black Sweat

5.Call My Name vs Incense and Candles: I like both

6.Cinnamon Girl vs Love: Love

7.What Do U Want Me 2 Do? vs Satisfied: What Do U Want Me 2 Do?

8.The Marrying Kind vs Fury: Fury

9.If I Was The Man In Ur Life vs The Word: The word by far!!!!

10.On The Couch vs Beautiful, Loved and Blessed: Beautiful, Loved and Blessed

11.Dear Mr. Man vs The Dance: I quite like Dear Mr. Man, but The Dance is my favourite song out of both albums

12.Reflection vs Get On The Boat: Reflection
