disbelief Damn, I feel just like I did when Roger died.

I feel ya. Only difference between the two for me is that I saw Roger a few times in concert (always top class) and never saw Rick. Like someone else said, I am NEVER missing seeing my favorite musicians in concert again.

It's scary -- just yesterday, my coworker and I were making plans to see Rick perform at an upcoming festival here in New Orleans.

Still in shock. . . sad

My thoughts and prayers go out to his family and all fellow fans, as well as fellow Teena Marie fans who are, no doubt, feeling this too.

There's no way he'd be remembered as a one hit wonder. For one, he had more hits than that. A one hit wonder has one big song, THE END. Rick was on the R & B charts with Give it to me Baby, Cold Blooded, Ebony Eyes, Glow, Standing on the Top, Mary Jane, and productions like In my House for the Mary Jane Girls.

I totally agree, but I'm also just referring to the younger generation. Many of them aren't willing to explore music that isn't played in heavy rotation on MTV. I doubt they will do a music video tribute to him. BET and VH1 might, but the majority of young viewers watch MTV. Plus, Rick's last televised appearance before the BET awards was not a positive one of him. I'll always love me some "Mary Jane" and "Super Freak" though. Rick was the man! biggrin

Despite the circumstances, this has been an interesting thread. Thanks, Anxiety, for putting it all here...

A few things I'm thinking/feeling/noticing...

1. It is "telling" -- I won't color it positive OR negative, that the FIRST thing I thought about when I heard that Rick was dead was how this was going to affect Dave Chapelle and his catchphrase: "I'm Rick James, bitch!" I mean no disrespect for those of you who were on fire for Rick...I certainly appreciated him...but it goes to show that Dave is hot right NOW.

2. Some of us are skeptical of the "natural causes" announcement, but nobody here has mentioned yet (that I saw), that "natural causes" could still be a heart attack from a body weakened by years of drug use. He needn't have been doing drugs LAST NIGHT to have died from his bad habits. Conversely, a "clean" tag like "natural causes" is, in this case, most certainly influenced by the mistakes in his past.

3. I'm a "media guy" (I teach about this subject and read on it a lot) and am interested in the comments from those of you who are angry that the media is including the negative things from his past in his obituary today. But I'm afraid, and some of you have alluded to this, that all the "average" American knows of Rick James is: "Superfreak," drug addiction, and "I'm Rick James, bitch!" If you know more than this, you are not "average."

4. Isn't it odd how some of these dying legends had projects at the ready? There's a new Ray Charles cd out at the end of this month and it's being touted as one his most solid records in years...now Rick has been working with Kanye West and Chapelle is working on a biopic of him...just bizarre timing. And not the same thing as Tupac. Maybe Rick can log some time in Tupac's heavenly studio to release new material from the grave...

I'll stop there...for now.

I just saw the story pop up on the Netscape homepage and just shouted "no". This is so sad and so sucky. Everything I've heard from him I've loved. Probably not the best time to go pick up his CDs. While I thought it was kind of cool that he saw a slight comeback among kids due to the Dave Chappelle appearance and impressionation (which I'm sure will never be done again now), I hope that the kids pick up his CDs and records so they can realize why people dig him so much. I'm gonna miss im. His work was not done on Earth and hopefully we will hear his new album sometime soon. Rest in Peace, Rick.

eek What's really depressing me more than his death is the fact that many young people don't know anything about him besides what Dave Chappelle put on his show. He'll be remembered by many young music listeners as "I'm Rick James, Bitch!" more than for the amazing music he put out. I was talking to my 10 and 11 year old cousins after Ray Charles died and they were like, "Who is Ray Charles?" I told them about his songs and they didn't have a clue, but when I mentioned the old "Uh, huh" Pepsi commercials, they were like, "Oh!" Sad really. If I ever choose to have any kids, I'm introducing them to every single artist out there. The artist deserves more than to be remembered as just a catch phrase. R.I.P. Rick James. You will be missed. pray

A "one hit wonder"? I don't think so. Rick had a few pop hits (You and I, Dance Wit Me, Give It To Me Baby, and Coldblooded). They weren't as big as Super Freak, but they did well. I am definitely affected by Rick's death for some reason. I guess his music has made a larger effect on my life that I realize. I can remember being 6 years old listening 2 my 8-track of Street Songs. I can remember vividly listening to "Make Love To Me" in my parent's living room admiring the saxophone solo in that song. Hell, "Mr. Police Man" made me aspire 2 be a better piano player.

I hope Rick is finally at peace.

Now I'm sitting here thinking, who's next? Stevie? Michael? Prince? My heroes are dying. My "musical youth" is disappearing.

I don't mean to say that my personal musical heroes are in anyway role models to which you tell your kids to emulate or hope that they follow... for me, they are mine for my very own selfish funky past oriented reasons. I have no problem defending them for MY reasons.... the word "hero" is many things to many people. These are my "heroes".

Rick James was my hero. I cried today for him. I will forever remember my "super freaky" days and the fun and funk I had with his music...
God bless you Rick... wilted

It's weird I was a white kid growing up in the cold Northeast not too far from Buffalo and I wanted to be Rick James.. He was so cool., and so funky..

I too feel that I've lost some of my childhood today..

Have any of you heard the Rick James album Glow? It seems no one knows it, but I think it's his best album. It hasn't been reissued on CD, it came out in 1985. You guys should really check it out.

I went to work this morning at 7am.

I was completely involved with my work, like most days, to have heard anything other than what goes on at work...

Today, at around 4pm, a co-worker told me Rick James had died.

It felt like I had been punched in the stomache. I really couldn't believe it.

Today, on my way home, I kept hitting the scan button hoping to hear something to confirm this... maybe my co-worker was wrong, huh? I kept searching. I found a station playing "You & I"... I left it there... the DJ said nothing after the song was over... it just went to a commercial as if nothing was wrong.

Still... I knew he was dead. During the song, I was getting teary eyed... c'mon Thomas, grab a hold of yourself...

I got home and my wife was doing a project she'd been working on for a couple of days... and jammin' to Prince! (I couldn't believe that myself), she was playing "Pink Cashmere" (sp?), she turned around and asked what was wrong...

I told her, hey, this is just some horrible news... don't worry it's no one we actually know... but (and then tears were coming out of my eyes) Rick James died today... he was found dead at his home. I actually cried telling her... she was afraid at first cuz she thought a family member had an accident or something. I told her that I couldn't understand my reaction, just that a major piece of my childhood (early teens, etc...) had just passed... I was devastated. She just hugged me.

The first Rick James album I bought was "Bustin' Out" and then "Super Freak"... cry

I've gotten a lot of messages from people who are shocked to discover this news, and I think the best thing for us to do is to have one spot on the site where we can all discuss this loss. Thank you - Anx[/color]

I will truly miss Rick James;I remember when my son was a baby his father played Rick James music all the time. He was recently suppose to do a concert here at MSG in NYC but it was cancelled. I was so looking forward to seeing him...he will truly be missed. sad

I just found out this morning about this. Man, it was a shock! omfg I couldn't believe it.

I was actually considering going to see him with Teena Marie and The Time in October. sad Now I don't even know if that tour will commence. sad

All morning I've just been thinking about my favorite Rick James jam, "Below The Funk".

guitar whistle "I said PASS THE JOINT!!!!! Give me one mo' hit, I ain't finished with it, I got some mo' to say....."

He was undeniably the master of Punk/Funk.
