RSD Release: The Truth Sony Reissue: Crystal Ball

Per Dr. Funkenberry:

RSD release. "The Truth" by @prince. Sony Legacy issue. June release. Official announcement release to follow at some point.
Safe to say the next Sony Legacy reissue will be "Crystal Ball" with "The Truth" being a stand alone release.

The Truth has got to be one of my least favorite Prince albums of all time. It's right down there with N.E.W.S.

Cool news for those who like it, though.

Yet another pointless, uninspired release. A vault full of unreleased material and they release something that is going to be re-released soon anyway.

????

Does it not make clear in the OP that CB and The Truth are being released as separate albums?

As much as The Truth and Crystal Ball deserve a re-release. I really wish these guys would focus on vault stuff, THAT is where the treasure is.

Or is there some reason that Sony currently cannot release vault material?

I want to see these re-release as an in addition to kind of thing, not as a substitution for.

I'm glad it's getting a stand alone release (on vinyl?), It deserves it and it also frees up 'space' on the CB re-release as it's going to be a big vinyl lump as it is, even without Truth (also I guess Kamasutra will be quietly forgotten about - even though I like it, and I would actually buy it in CD format - as I only have the cassettte and bootleg mp3s).

This is not a pointless release at all.

The Truth deserves a proper release, and a vinyl release.... and hopefully it sounds like it's getting it.

All the man's catalogue should be back in print. That stands to reason.

The only issue I have is with the speed these things are being released. They need to increase the regularity of releases. But there's no question that all Prince's catalogue needs to be properly released, and on vinyl!

The Truth will be nice to have on its own and on vinyl. But no need for Crystal Ball since I still have my original. Anyone know what the hold up is on The Gold Experience? Thats the 90s album that REALLY needs to be re-released. My copy was stolen years ago. Thankfully I downloaded before it got lifted it so have the album, but would love it on vinyl.

I agree. I'd be a lot more interested if they dug around enough to make a Crystal Ball 2

Heck, they could deliver an Originals album every week for a few years if they wanted to.

My dream for that is all his vocal versions of the Milk & Honey album and his vocal version of With This Tear that he gave to Celine.

I’m very underwhelmed with the releases that are coming out this year.‘The Truth’ is an interesting album but I still have my original CD copy.I don’t feel the need to buy a reissue.

Even though I own "Crystal Ball", it would be cool to own "The Truth" on vinyl. Question is do I want it enough to brave RSD?

I'm sure there's a thread on this somewhere on the board, but the basic gist is that there's a lawsuit that's been going on in Italian court where some dudes claim that Prince copied their music when he wrote The Most Beautiful Girl in the World. Until that's sorted out, no TGE rerelease and no TMBGITW on any compilations.

I do hope that it does get resolved, as that is one of the 90s albums I really want on vinyl and the Super Deluxe Edition of that album with all the outtakes, demos, NPG materials, and stuff I'm sure we don't know about could be amazing.

In the meantime, be sure to look for the boot "The Dawn". It's one of my favorite fan creations and does a very nice job of sythesizing a ton of the great material from that era.

It's almost a given that they're not going to remix/remaster Crystal Ball in any way, I assume?

Looks like I'm in the minority but I'm excited to get a vinyl copy of The Truth album...its one of my favorites and I hate that it never even got a proper release...finally we'll get proper artwork...I think it'll suit vinyl too..even if its purple (I really wish they'd do something different than purple all the time)

Wouldn't it make so much more sense for the song to continue to be available and make money, and if the claimants end up winning, then they get more money?

There was a tape version with full artwork laying around in Paisley Park in 2001 (during the Celebration) that I don't remeber being sold. I did see it once being auctioned tho so there is full artwork form the tape version at least and it's probab;y the same for the CD version and eventual vinyl version.

Well indeed I'm happy.

Only not for the Crystal Ball re-release, which must be the most incoherent fan-like low point spotify playlist ever put out as an official CD package. wink Bash me.

-

Though, both albums you mention are straight up fantastic niche albums.

''The Truth'' having Prince in an accoustic transition, with some great songs on it,

and ''N.E.W.S.'' actually being an ultimate refined Prince & Eric Leeds collaboration.

You're right, but more profitable ? I doubt that.

Isn't it just too expensive to release that ?

Considdering only a few thousand copies will be sold,

therefor never cover the production costs.

Although I'm not an expert.

I've put my expectation for the end of this year, if they plan to release anything worth while.

I even hope for a better 2022 release.

Actually what the hell.

-

WHY DON'T THEY TELL US WHAT IS GOING ON THERE ?

I mean, for fucks sake just be open about what is happening, or not.

Is it that difficult to just keep us warm with what is happening in the production of things ?

Why so suspicious all the time?

Most fans/people that still are interested (and ready) to pay for expensive boxes

and stand alone rereleases are basically between 40 and 60 yo. No ?

-

I for one just waited untill the (SONY) rereleases were lower in price.

I found them in sales for half the price or less.

I am no fool for paying 34 EURO's for a reissue vinyl edition of ''Chaos & Disorder'' or ''The Versace Experience'' to name a few.

And I found all of 'm by just being patient.

Even the LP box of ''Emancipation'' I found for only 52 EURO, pristeen condition, sealed, like all the others.

If you look in record stores here in Europe there are still tons of unsold reissues available,

both on CD or vinyl, as if the market is saturated...

.

It's a bloody RSD release! They're supposed to be limited anyway! If they'd put out some actually noteworthy stuff instead of some lame vinyl edition of an album any self-respecting Prince fan already owns, they'd sell more copies.

.

I think the only time they did something remote interesting was when they released the Versace Experience, but then it was on tape and everyone who wasn't a desperate collector already realised that the damn thing would get an official release later (no way they'd just put out some random tape). And even that thing wasn't that spectacular since it had been on boots. And in the end their release was based on a bloody tape source, not even a professional mastertape!

The lawsuit ended a while ago, with the writing credits going to the Italian musicians, at least with any Italian distribution of the album.
