HONEST QUESTION: If the Brits were broadcast on international television (ITV network) last night, then why does the org moderator refer to links to the performance as "illegal"?

If I receord the Brits on video tonight and then decide to replay the tape for all my neighbours, that is perfectly lawful and is within copyright rules as the performance has fallen into the public domain.

How does that make a link to the same performance "illegal"???

TENMO

P.S. To avoid a temporary ban or any other restriction on my right of free speech I am expressly NOT looking for links, mp3s, etc.

It WAS broadcast last night - via at least 2 online radio stations in a streaming real-time format.

But simply because something has fallen into the public domain, it doesn't mean you can distribute it freely. For instance, you can't record music from the radio and then go handing out CDs of it down the market, even if you were giving it away for free. You can record stuff if it is for private use only, technically.

I don't know all the ins-and-outs of the legal situation with such things - but I agree that the Org has to err on the side of caution when it comes to legal matters, otherwise the site could be shut down.

There's a thread been started to more appropiately discuss such matters:

I hope he follows this up with some UK TV appearances. He did the rounds in '99.... even went on CD:UK (that interview with Cat Deeley was pure TV gold for me).

I'm not a big fan of medley's. They're a bit tacky. Although I am excited to see his performance.

I wouldn't count on it. Prince hasn't performed it with Stevie except maybe once , since it was recorded.

Got great reviews this morning on Radio here in th UK

Radio 1 - Chris Moyes show played Raspberry Berret - and he said before the song started "nice and loud watch this is the man who is going to blow your mind at the Brits tonight" - referring to the TV broadcast 2night

Radio 2 - Johnnie Walker review - the guy reviewing it said that when Prince played all the other musicians and journalist stopped their interviews to watch him and that he was the biggest music star there last night

Radio 5 Live -am told that the guy said he was amazing and it was unfair that he was on early because he had set a benchmark for all the other musicians performing

Thanks, at least I'm not the only one... Give me Renato over Lisa any day (do I get a one week ban from prince.org by sosgemini now??? eek )

From what I've heard, I really liked the performance, the sound quality was crappy, I hope for the TV stuff here. But I haven't heard any significant contribution by the old companions (W-L-S) that the NPG lineup 2002-2004 couldn't have provided... New studio work with them might be interesting, but live they are as necessary as a remastered version of "Newpower Soul" IMHO...

I kind of agree - if you're going to do something as major as a Wendy & Lisa reunion performance, you should really do it in front of an audience that really cares, such as a proper gig for fans somewhere. I bet it was completely lost on the Brits audience.

Clearly W&L and even Shiela are not going to be as tightly rehearsed as Prince's normal band, and even this new band is probably not as tight yet as the old ONA/Musicology NPG. The audio I heard is not great, but the performance does sound a bit sloppy in places, though I think rushing through a medley of 4 songs doesn't help. But the over-all vibe of the performance and the crowd reaction seemed fantastic. Again, just hope they show the whole thing unedited.

I wholeheartedly agree! Had he done that in Detroit, the whole place would have been excited excited excited excited excited excited excited excited excited excited

Don't know if anyone's posted this yet but here goes (from contactmusic.com):

Rapper KANYE WEST may be one of the most confident stars in the charts, but even he grew starstruck after seeing PRINCE at the Brit Awards last night (15FEB06).

The DIAMONDS FROM SIERRA LEONE hitmaker and diminutive superstar Prince both performed at the London ceremony, while West picked up International Male Solo Artist.

After watching Prince perform his megahit PURPLE RAIN from backstage, West admits he was too shy to approach the singer for an autograph.

West says, "I really want to ask for a signed picture, but he's so famous you don't dare ask. You gotta respect the legends."

Incidentally the builders working on my house this morning were raving about the Prince performance. I played them Black Sweat and they loved it.

On Radio 1 they also interviewed Peter Kay on the night and during the interview Peter Kay asked someone "who's on now, is it Prince?" and someone confirmed it was and he said "Oh gotta go watch Prince!" and left.

Also, when you see Kanye West's performance, see if anything reminds you of a certain performance of Gett Off that Prince did.....

Gosh, I just listened to that performance; and your all dear Sheila "what's timing ?!" E. completely f*s everything up, especially LGC, but also Fury! I knew she can't pull off a musically decent drum solo but instead tries to play as many notes per beat as possible by human standards. But tonight I had to make the experience that she isn't even able to play in sync with the not too complicated drum patterns of cora...

keep in mind that the stream was in glorious mono though. All the instruments were fighting for a place in the audio spectrum. Add to that the rather fucked up mix (waaay to much bass, for instance) and the tower of compressors those radio stations insist on using, and you end up with umm.. well whatever it was you heard smile

Let's hope the audio on tonight's broadcast does turn her down, her performance was awful, poor audio or not. And she performs an equally dreadful solo on the 'One Nite Alone' (official) DVD ... so I fear we're just going to have to live with it this time too.

That would have been recorded weeks ago when Stevie was in London promoting his new album, TV shows now stock up on performances to be transmitted at much later dates.

The audio was broadcast on online radio live.
The recorded TV broadcast of the same event is tonight.
I think that's as clear as I can make it.

It was a nice performance, but word is is that it got cut for TV broadcast, as in just "Purple Rain" and "Let's Go Crazy" will be shown... Hope they're wrong though because the way he came up and started "Te Amo Corazon" was pretty slick and you should have seen the faces of all the products there...

The little Universal party at "Nobu" afterwards wasn't all that just said my hello's to some people and then hung a bit with Prince and co. and then left 5 minutes after him, obviously just a "show your face" appearance at the club...

Sounds like a great time! Haven't you been to the SNL performance, too? You sure come around. In case the first broadcast is edited, which appears to be likely unfortunately, I hope there's an unedited version shown sometime somewhere.

That was because I wanted to be there (little icing on the cake after the Tamar gigs) but The Brits I had to attend unfortunately, glad though Prince was there along with his more worthwhile ex-bandmembers...

I hope so too, my girl taped the radio broadcast but accidentally erased it instead of some crappy mono version of it that someone posted...
(People, use "Total Recorder" for things like this then what you hear is what you get; as in stereo...)

So have you seen Lisa herself? Because from the pictures we've seen by now, she could be that woman in the back with the keyboards, she could be not.

Yes, she was on the right side of the drummer providing backup vocals and piano...

Well, if you compare it to what was broadcast on the radio this mono version sounds like ass after 10 burrito's...
I wish those useless radio voiceovers tell people when they're rebroadcasting his segment so people can actually record it, I heard it again on some channel this morning, which was quite good, but failed to record it...
