Jaco never did much (if any) plucking and popping and still, he's done things on bass that I haven't heard anyone else do. Always in the pocket, very funky, could take it just about anywhere.

He had a thing where he'd "pinch" the strings and slide his hand in a "slap" along the neck. Did u see it that way?

Hey SN, I got somethng ya might dig. Let me finish setting it up and I'll hit ya on the ORGNOTE thingie.

Sure, but MorehouseMan didn't specify Funk bass players only.

Some people can overuse the plucking and popping though to the point of being gimmicky. It should be used sparingly, if you ask me.

I think more rock-oriented bass players play WITH A PICK, while a funkster goes it with thumbs and fingers. I noticed that in McCartney and also Jack Bruce. Any substance here?

I don't remember. I've only seen Jaco once (with Weather Report) live, and that was on TV. The one thing I'm kicking myself since then about it is the fact that I didn't record it on my VCR! This was maybe about a decade ago when BET had a much better variety of music on their channel.

Lenny Kravitz - Yeah, that's right, Kravitz. Listen to 5 and then come and talk to me. His guitar work is only average to me but his bass work on "Thinking of You" and "I belong to you" is some of the best I've heard.

Peace

I love the bass and someday before I kick it I want to learn 777-9311 and Let's Work. I learned Jesse Johnson's I Wanna Be Your Mn which is pretty cool.

As far as Lenny's bass, well that Thinking of You song was a complete Sade ripoff, just pick one of her songs and then listen to that one. although I did like it. I read an interview with Lenny way back that said the key to his sound is mixing the bass way up. Listen to his first few recrds and that's what makes them funky, like the old 70's records, it's the bass mixed way up.

Here's my favorite bass players-

Darryl Jones (I saw him with Miles and he was awesome)
Bootsy
Sting
Paul McCartney (try singing and playing those parts!)
Terry Lewis (simple but you know it's him)
Prince
Pino Palladino

You know, going by my ears alone, I can't say that I've noticed it with McCartney on recordings - BUT, I do remember he did that with that Hofner violin bass he used to play with the Beatles all the time during TV shows.

Personally I just can't stand it when bass players use a pick! It has a whole different texture to the notes. There's a U2 album that leans more to a dance/r&b type of style called Zooropa, and their bass player Adam Clayton plays better than I've ever heard him play. And it doesn't sound like he's playing with a pick, but every time I see him on TV playing he's playing with a pick, so I don't know if he is or not on the album. Nine times out of 10 I can usually discern whether or not someone is playing with a pick just by listening. And I don't like it. It should be outlawed!

Hahaha. The bassist I play with in church kept saying the same thing: "Real bassists use their fingers." He was also ragging me, because I'll use a pick in a heartbeat. You can pick a bass funkily. Marcus Miller does it all the time. If you listen to "All She Needs is Love" off of his The Sun Don't Lie cd, you'll hear him picking a good part of the song without losing any funk.
